Enderle: ‘4th quarter will be Apple’s hardest since the first iPod Christmas’
Monday, September 18, 2006 - 01:18 PM EST

"Apple held a media event on September 12th, 2006. While there was a lot of speculation about an Apple phone, my belief is that it is still coming, but the 12th didn’t appear to be an appropriate venue for that device. Phones tend to be heavily leveraged by the services that connect to them, and the coordination needed with the service provider tends to make it both easier and stronger to do a phone product alone. This clearly was being positioned as a movie oriented event, and as a result, our expectations were tied to movies," Rob Enderle writes for Digital Trends.

"The most obvious product was an iPod tuned for movies, and this means a screen that has a panoramic aspect ratio. The existing iPod line is designed primarily to do music (and frankly, that is a big part of why it is successful, since it does this very well), but for a movie event we needed a large screen movie iPod, and what we got was something less. Granted, the 80-gigabyte model is slightly modified in capacity and battery life, but for movies, it just didn’t have the anticipated screen, so it fell short of expectations," Enderle writes.

"The second was an iTunes-like movie service that did for movies what iTunes did for music. This was a huge miss, but probably not Apple’s fault, because the movie industry is much harder to work with in this regard than the music industry, and it is clear even Apple can’t make much headway. They only got Disney, which raised the question of whether Apple’s new closeness with that company is actually creating problems with the others," Enderle writes.

"The third was a home 'media center' type of product. They did tease this product [iTV], but it will miss the critical 4th quarter where the vast majority of sales for this kind of device occur. Apple not only doesn’t “tease” products like this, they have a history of going after folks who do. This last product seemed strange and made it feel like they knew they were missing expectations by a mile and trying to fill the gap with a future offering. More likely, they are simply trying to keep folks from buying competing products until theirs shows up. Not a bad strategy, not even uncommon, but unusual for Apple," Enderle writes. "Now, the iTunes improvements are rock solid; the product is more visually exciting, and it appears to provide a stronger overall user experience, both of which are very positive. With this Apple showcased why they deserve to be at the top of the heap."

Enderle writes, "This week Microsoft released its new 'Zune' service which competes with the iPod and iTunes. The service has a number of interesting parts starting with a flat rate payment option (shared with Urge, Rhapsody, and Yahoo), a MySpace social networking component, and built in legal file sharing of purchased and rented songs. This is all built around a company-within-a-company which feels more like a record label than anything else. Unfortunately the Zune player is kind of large and clunky and folks must buy the player and then get the service, not the other way around. If Microsoft wants to play here they need to have compelling hardware."

Enderle writes, "Apple is far from out of the game. They still have the most complete line of any vendor and arguably the highest quality user experience. However, the competitors appear to be rapidly closing the gap, and this announcement didn’t widen that gap appreciably. The 4th quarter will be Apple’s hardest since the first iPod Christmas, and next year will be vastly harder still."

Full article in which Enderle writes that his opinion is "independent of Apple and avoids any bias—positive or negative" here.

MacDailyNews Take: In August 2005, Rob Enderle predicted, "fourth quarter, in particular, should be ugly for Apple" due to the company's Intel transition. In the fourth (holiday) quarter, Apple shipped 1,254,000 Macintosh computers during the quarter, which represented 20 percent growth in Mac sales year-over-year and record revenue and profits of $5.75 billion and $565 million respectively. See Big surprise: Enderle was wrong about Apple’s holiday quarter Mac sales - January 19, 2006. If there is any constant in the universe, it's that Enderle never learns. We look forward to seeing the results of the holiday 4th quarter and how it compares to Enderle's prediction that it "will be Apple’s hardest since the first iPod Christmas."

Yeah, what the hell Rob? You were an analyst in when, the Carter administration? 1970's? And your opinions matter now because........?

Someone should hack into his site and take it down.

He's just trolling for hits, that's all. We all know he was dead wrong last year and that he'll be dead wrong once again this year.

He just puts out these bogus statements to generate hits, so don't put any more undeserved money in his pocket than what he already has....

Listen, if a million of us get together and put in $10, we could pay to have Enderle sent into space. Of course, the big problem is keeping him there - but that's just a detail.

"This week Microsoft released its new 'Zune' service which competes with the iPod and iTunes."

Really? Please tell me where I can buy a Zune today, Rob. The only thing MS released was hot air, as usual.

Can someone explain to me how a supposedly professional columnist can use a phrase like "Apple's hardest quarter"?

What the Hell does that mean?

"Hardest"? "Hardest quarter"? I must infer that he means "difficult," but the word also means "firm, strong, not yielding to pressure."

This guy is not only consistently WRONG in his opinion about all things Apple; he's a very, very poor writer!

Sep 18, 06 - 12:31 pm Comment from: Lotus11

Is it just me or has there been alot of Apple backlash lately? Seems like alot of people are rooting for Apple to fail.

The so-called "competition" is scrambling to get the 25% US market share that iPod doesn't have already, before Apple gets it. They can't even make their "announced" products available (or even provide pricing and complete specs). Between iPod and Mac, Apple will have a record-breaking holiday quarter.

Sep 18, 06 - 12:41 pm Comment from: lotus11

Well, I personally have had a few people at work say that they would get a Zune (even a brown one) just to shut Apple down. It is beginning to feel like the honeymoon is over. I hope not though.

Sep 18, 06 - 12:42 pm Comment from: Ray Lane

I think that by using the phrase "hardest quarter" Enderle is covering his own butt. It's a meaningless phrase. If Apple has a bad quarter, he can say he predicted it. If Apple has a great quarter, he can claim that what he meant was that it was hard do to the new competition, but they prevailed.

Kind of like when medical people use 'efficacious' instead of 'effective' when describing a drug or device.

Sep 18, 06 - 12:43 pm Comment from: Vinita Boy

I agree wholeheartedly, "ken1w"!

And what do you suppose will be announced next Monday at the Apple Event in Germany?

Whatever it is, Apple is proud enough of it to draw special attention to the rollout. Suppose that might have an effect on the ol' 4th quarter bottom line?

(NOTE: Enderle is a moron and, like Dvorak before him, has truly reached the end of his usefulness.)

Sep 18, 06 - 12:43 pm Comment from: Scott

Funny how he can make a prediction when no one knows what else we will see before the end of October. I wouldn't be surprised to see two new products or upgrades soon that will help 4th quarter results. The iTV was announced early to complete the picture and hopefully get consumers to delay buying other movies until the studios get onboard with iTunes.

Sep 18, 06 - 12:46 pm Comment from: JadisOne

Apple is one of the fastest growing retailers (if not the fastest) in the U.S., there is clear demand for its computers (especially the Macbook), Apple's sales have been outpacing its peers, and Apple just sweetened its iPod offerings with new, updated iPods.

I think Enderle has Apple mixed up with Real or Napster. Clearly, he does not see what's right in front of him.

Lotus11, your officemates' proclaiming that they'll buy a Zune just to shut Apple down reminds me of the old "cutting your nose off to spite your face" expression.

I wonder what they'll do to hold their glasses up while listening to their brown Zune-Turds? (Windows fanboys/girls can be so pathetic sometimes, but who wouldn't be, given what they have to put up with on a daily basis?)

"Well, I personally have had a few people at work say that they would get a Zune (even a brown one) just to shut Apple down. It is beginning to feel like the honeymoon is over. I hope not though."

I hope not either. I'll offer this on the positive side:

A co-worker, a long time Windows user, was given a 1.42Ghz MDD G4 that the "givee" thought was dead. I did a simple logic board reset, brought it to life, set it all up for him, and 6 hours later he stop by to say "I love this Apple! It's the greatest computer I've ever seen!"

Just made my day! 1 more down, several hundred million more to go!

Sep 18, 06 - 12:53 pm Comment from: ENDERLE IS A MAROON

Whaat a dipwad!!

Sep 18, 06 - 12:54 pm Comment from: Jake

Yes, there is something of an anti-Apple backlash going on right now. Lots of people resent success, especially big corporate success. It just doesn't fit their world view that a big company could be creative, honest, and successful. (Thankfully, there are a lot fewer of these people in the U.S. than in most other countries.) The main exception, of course, is the media. With them it's not just ideological, it also allows them to fabricate "drama"--i.e., first the rise, then the fall--which attracts readers/viewers. The bottom line is Apple fans better get used to it, at least until the press tires of the story line.

Ah, so that's it.

Apple introduced them too early so everyone's buying one before this quarter ends on Sep 30. Which means that there will be no one left to buy an iPod in the 4th quarter.

I understand Enderle now....

Sep 18, 06 - 12:55 pm Comment from: Jayplus

Wait until they release their quarterly results. I think like recent quarters, they'll blow the numbers right out of the water. I know several people who bought iPods and are kicking themselves because they want the Nano's now. Like the Pink Mini, I think the Pink Nano will be one hot ticket this Christmas.

Lotus11 - when has the mainstream media and in particular, the "analyst" realm, ever NOT been secretly rooting for Apple to fail, with the occasoional lapse of judgment when they actually printed their blatantly biased and palm-greased opinion?

Don't worry too much... I don't think their plan will have that dramatic effect wink

Sep 18, 06 - 01:11 pm Comment from: Nick Holla

to mark, intresting, might be the case, but I think these models will be a frenzy much like the similar Mini, the all-time best seller. And, there are no education discounts because of the slashed prices, which I beleive a broader crowd will be intrested in. So, I dare to say that sales will remain strong thru xmas, as a 2GB silver nano is only $149. All of this is based on what I have seen in person and judging on people's comments and speculations....people are falling in live with this new product and have no issues.....the two major ones (battery and toughness) have been addressed, prompting people who wouldn't buy one before, to go out and get it because it is the one they have been waiting for.

Sep 18, 06 - 01:12 pm Comment from: Macaday

This guy is SERIOUSLY STUPID.

I really don't think MDN you should be bothered to cover what he says.

Sep 18, 06 - 01:13 pm Comment from: Derek from Lindfield

Interesting... but before we go making too many hard and fast predictions about Apples's Q4 figures, aren't we forgetting something - like Mac sales for example? I'm reasonably confident that iPod sales will hold up well, and a bit of serious competition would probably do our favourite company no harm at all (although I doubt that Zune will provide that). But maybe the Mac is the real story. We've just bought a MacBook, and the danged thing took weeks to arrive. I just don't think Apple can make them quickly enough to meet demand. The new iMacs look great too; and the Mac Pro must be on a lot of people's shopping lists. I think it's likely to be a very strong quarter for Apple in terms of computer sales, whatever happens to the iPod numbers. To call it the 'hardest quarter since the first iPod Christmas' seems a trifle pessimistic in this context. But then, what do I know? I'm not an expert like Mr Enderle.

Sep 18, 06 - 01:14 pm Comment from: b

Enderle maybe an idiot, but one mistake he has in common with most people. It's that the movie store is about the ipod. It's not. The movie store is about iTV, and pcs and the sloowwww migration to a download format for movies. People watching full length movies on ipods are few and far between. The fact that ipods can play the movies is more about perceived value and an extension of Apple's reach into the "living room". What's funny is that other companies like MS, think they're behind in that aspect, but they're just chasing smoke and mirrors.

Sep 18, 06 - 01:16 pm Comment from: lotus11

The good news is I just bought a 80G black. My old ipod was a 2G, so I am definately pleased with it. The bad news is I have to shell out another $80 for a new shuffle because my GF thinks its "soooo cute and tiny." lol.

Yeah, I shoudn't get worked up over the naysayers. They are always out there.

Sep 18, 06 - 01:40 pm Comment from: mark

Hey Nick, I wasn't being serious about that. I actually think Apple has a good chance of exceeding the 14+ million iPods they sold in the Xmas quarter last year. And I think Apple will have the highest revenue and even profit ever in the Xmas quarter.

The iPod demand still exists. iPods are still at the top of Xmas lists for children, teens, college students, and young adults. The new designs for the shuffle and nano have made them new things. The Nintendo Wii (and DS Lite) has a chance to take some share; the Sony PS3 will be too late and too expensive; besides that, what else is there, especially for girls? And with another year of exposure, more older adults are buying - podcasts play a role in this.

And the affordability is getting better. I think the $79 shuffles are going to sell like hotcakes. And $199 for the colored nanos hit a real sweet spot for a special gift. (I feel sorry for parents who buy the $149 model.) Plus even more accessory sales.

All this coupled with booming Mac sales. I'm sure the MBP will be refreshed soon, while the iMac, mini, and Pro have already been. Those should more than makeup for whatever post-back-to-school dropoff there is in the MB (assuming no refresh).

""Apple is far from out of the game."

LOL thanks for not counting Apple out. I'm sure they feel much better now even though they've got 75% of the market.

Sep 18, 06 - 01:41 pm Comment from: Nick Holla

concerning mac sales, it might be the fact of my location (silicon valley) but I seem to have a lot windows IT guys coming and asking if they can wipe a macbook clean and install only windows, of course I ask them if they are crazy. I have also had upper management from local companies who say they just want the apple hardware and not the OS at this point.......so, this makes mac sales figures a little questionable, yes, apple is selling more macs, yes they have sparked a lot more interest, but how many of these sales are using OS X? Hopefully they will play with OS X enough to figure out it's waaaay better.

Sep 18, 06 - 01:46 pm Comment from: ROFLMAO

Oh my Rob, could you be more clueless than you are already? After the announcement of the new iPods the jump in sales has been greater than for any other iPod generation announcement ever done before. Just amazing.

Hardest quarter? Well, at least the choice of the word is right, only with a different meaning you had in mind. It is going indeed to be the hardest: difficult to keep record of sales for how fast the new iPods are flying off the shelves: BOUM, they are gone.

Thanks

Sep 18, 06 - 02:22 pm Comment from: mark

Nick,

You have a point about how we need to count Mac users going forward.

But Apple will be glad to take the money, and use it to pay not only for future Mac hardware improvements, but also for further improvements to the Mac OS and iLife, etc.

Sep 18, 06 - 02:25 pm Comment from: dogfriend

I would be tempted to buy one of the new Nanos if I didn't already have a 4GB 1st gen Nano. Plus a 3rd gen iPod that still works great.

The new shuffle is very cool as well.
