Enderle expects black Apple Macs to debut on Wednesday, not convinced of video iPod debut
Monday, October 10, 2005 - 11:34 AM EST

"Here at the AMD Global Vision Conference we are covering the future of technology as AMD works to seize the visionary lead from Intel... Paul Saffo, who is moderating the event and is recognized as the leading technology futurist of our time, believes strongly that Apple will announce, along with Disney, the vPod and this will not only be a unique offering leveraging the Disney catalog but it will be a precursor to a renewed relationship between Pixar and Disney," Rob Enderle writes for Technology Pundits.

"Paul has a good hit rate with this stuff so I’m not one to sell him short I’m just not convinced the video side is cooked enough yet to make this successful and am still not convinced the buying public is ready for a small video device. However, that doesn’t mean they will never be ready," Enderle writes. "I do expect we will see some PC line changes from Apple and I’m anticipating some new black offerings in their Mac lines which, if done as well as the new Nano, could do a lot to hold up sales as they transition to Intel. The Apple market does buy on appearance and they aren’t gamers, priced right a really attractive product could move reasonably well in the 4th quarter."

Enderle writes, somewhat incoherently, "Regardless, Apple's announcements will be well worth watching as the dance they do to avoid the Osborn impact of their Intel platform move should case study level work." [We think he means "should inspire case study level work" or something to that effect.]

Full article here.

In a related article via TechNewsWorld, Enderle writes, "It is interesting to note that Apple was so scared of HP's entry into this market that they approached HP to co-brand the iPod. Of all the vendors out there HP probably has the best chance of coming up with a product and service that could compete."

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: It's the OS, stupid, More precisely, Mac OS X and the Apple Mac-only applications. The beautifully designed and elegant appearance of Apple's Mac products are just icing on the cake for the vast majority of Mac users. But, you'd actually have to use and understand the Mac platform first in order to grasp that concept. People like Rob "Microsoft wrote the first Mac OS" Enderle who insinuate that Mac users buy Macs because they like pretty cases display a massive lack of basic understanding about what makes the Mac market tick. Nearly all Mac users made the informed choice to use Mac for substantial reasons, the least of which is the pretty exterior. Furthermore, nearly all Window users don't choose their platform at all (certainly not for nonexistent elegant exterior cases), they just buy Windows because that's all they know. Again, most Mac users make an informed choice to pick Mac over Windows. Most Windows users do not choose Windows at all; they never even consider the Mac option.

Almost any "regular" personal computer user who wants a reliable machine that can surf the Web, email, manage music, photos, word-process, do their finances, edit home movies, chat, keep track of their calendars, and much more would be far better off with any Mac OS X machine over any Windows XP machine. It has nothing to do with the computer's exterior. The only "benefits" to using Windows are specific Windows-only applications (mainly in businesses that have shortsightedly shackled themselves and their workers to Windows), and games, for which we'd recommend a gaming console over a Windows PC anyway.

Enderle's assertion that "Apple was so scared of HP's entry into this market that they approached HP to co-brand the iPod," offers further proof that he's just plain nuts.

As long as Enderle continues to be quoted as if he's an informed "expert" by mainstream tech media outlets, we'll cover his Apple-related scribbles to highlight his ignorance and/or bias about Apple and their products. Despite all that we've read from Enderle, we still can't figure out if he's serious, just trolling for hits, or a failed attempt to mainstream the mentally challenged.

[UPDATE, 2:35pm ET: Addd TechNewsWorld quote and appended "MDN Take."]

Oct 10, 05 - 12:21 pm Comment from: macnut222

I don't know how a Black computer is going to hold up sales for the transition. All Apple has to do is continue to offer solid value at a reasonable price - especially with regards to iMac, iBook and Mac mini - and they'll continue to have the increasing sales rate they currently have.

I don't believe the supposed 'Osborne effect' will ever touch Apple. Their product line and corporate execution has been stellar thus far and should enable them to transition without any major hiccups.

I hear the new Macs will be sporting that Mac OS that Microsoft wrote in the 80's.

Enderlie will tell you all about that OS if you ask him nicely.

Oct 10, 05 - 12:24 pm Comment from: MCCFR

Remember that according to Rob "Earthquake Boy" Enderle…

"Microsoft developed Mac OS"

To quote from my learned friend, one "Rainy Day"…

Saying that M$ helped in the original design of the Macintosh is akin to saying that chimpanzees developed Relativity theory and Einstein merely took the credit.

And that's why anything with Rob's name on it gets refiled into the out-tray of my head.

Oct 10, 05 - 12:26 pm Comment from: Hopeful

…mmm in an earlier post I expressed a desire for a Black iMac.
Think I'll now opt for beige:–)
Not!

Of course the appearance is just the icing, but it's the attention to detail
and superb quality throughout (inside and out/software and hardware)
which separates the Mac from the rest of the industry.

Oct 10, 05 - 12:26 pm Comment from: sd

I think they will hold off on the black for the first Intel Macs - just to add visual impact to their moving to the dark side.

Oct 10, 05 - 12:29 pm Comment from: ndelc

Wow, an article from Comical Rob E. that didn't have any misinformation! OK, well, his comment about Mac user's buying strictly on looks is off but there wasn't anything in this article that suggests he's using hallucinogens.

I'm glad that Apple makes their products look so great, but as I've said many times in the past, the box could be made of rocks and sticks and I'd still buy it because of the OS. MDN is absolutely right.

Oct 10, 05 - 12:35 pm Comment from: qka

Now we definitively know what Apple WILL NOT have Wednesday. Thank you for clearing that up, Mr. Enderle.

I wouldn't trust this guy if he said Steve Jobs was going to wear a turtle neck and jeans!

Apple went to black laptops in the early 90's (The PowerBook 500 series, aka the Blackbirds). The PC market followed. So why would Apple go backwards? That would make them look like Dull! As it is, PC makers are still trying to catch up with the brushed metal look.

A radical case makeover when they go to Intel, Probably. But not for a minor upgrade. Apple is not that desperate.

As for the real "one more thing....", I don't think anyone has really guessed it yet.

Enderle is such a tiresome little shit. I do wish MDN would give him a wider berth (ignore him).

Oct 10, 05 - 12:54 pm Comment from: Jack

Rob Enderle is smarter than the average flack. Every time he enrages the Mac community, the hits on his articles probably skyrocket. Think how this impresses his publishers. MacDailyNews is his biggest publicist.

Oct 10, 05 - 12:56 pm Comment from: Mihalis

Black macs???? Consider your iMac being black.... yikes!! So if apple updates mac to black.. what will do with power mac's?? Wait wait... I just had a vision... i see... powermacs made of IRON or COPER instead of aluminium... I wonder where these guys get those bright ideas... maybe because they all use pc's??

Oct 10, 05 - 01:03 pm Comment from: iMaki

White is timeless. Black is a fad and shows prints and dust. I think black will sell, but I'll be pissed if white is discontinued. Oh well, I might be pleasantly surprised. At least it isn't flower power or dalmation design. What was Stevo thinking????

Oct 10, 05 - 01:06 pm Comment from: Quevar

I hope they have a mini-tower with one or two PCI-express slots and 4 slots for memory. Something inbetween the Mac Mini and the G5 Towers without a monitor. That, I and I'm still hoping for a iTunes Movie and TV store where I can download movies and TV shows.

Oct 10, 05 - 01:11 pm Comment from: ken

Apple does have a challenge in maintaining sales until the Mactels are not only released, but the initial kinks are ironed out. While I'm happy with the Macs I'm using and won't consider a Mactel until rev b I would drool over a dual core Mac. Remember that both IBM and Freescale are to release dual core G5s and G4s right about now. Moving to dual core for the pro lines would generate some sales and keep the power users happy until the dust settles on the Mactels. My bet is on the dual cores and a little something in the ipod line for Christmas - probably a much smaller iPod that is close to the old iPod mini.

Oct 10, 05 - 01:28 pm Comment from: XPADREX

I'm a swticher back to the Mac, and in a short time I've learned two things:

1. I'm glad I bought my iBook- very glad.

2.Rob Enderle has a serious hard-on for all-things-Apple.

I could care less about the external appearance of the iBook- I just wanted something more stable, user friendly, and poweful enough for the long haul- and frankly, Apple was the solution for me.

I think a Mac mini will son be in the home as well- regardless of the appearance.

Oct 10, 05 - 01:31 pm Comment from: ndelc

ken, I think you're right. The pro line isn't supposed to go to Intel until 2007, so I think we're still going to see some fairly major updates on them between now and then, and dual core is very likely to be it.

Quad G5 PowerMacs and Dual G4 PowerBooks would be a pretty big deal. Regardless of how much of a performance boost it is, it sounds good, and the pro line has been pretty stagnant (don't take that to mean the current offerings aren't impressive - my dual 2.5 ghz G5 is awesome - they just haven't changed much in the last year). From a marketing perspective, the pro line desperately needs at least one major update before the Intels arrive.

Oct 10, 05 - 01:33 pm Comment from: ndelc

I should specify, dual dual-core G5s PowerMacs and dual-core G4 PowerBooks.

Oct 10, 05 - 01:34 pm Comment from: petervrdk

wasn't there an Apple patent about color-changing surfaces sometime ago?

....

MW: believe.... do you?

Oct 10, 05 - 01:40 pm Comment from: bergen

The aluminum look the power-line and mac mini have rules. I never get tired of it. It's elegant, classy, and makes sense on so many levels. White is starting to bore me... at least on the iPods.

Not that color matters. I love the iMacs, the design and execution, and would buy one if I had the money. My 17" PB has to do for now.. :/

Black...not so sure about it for computers. Different for iPods. But I think the black color on the nano doesn't fit with the graphical interface on the screen. Looks out of tune. Can't imagine what it would do to macos X as a whole.

Oct 10, 05 - 01:59 pm Comment from: NewType

I'm not sure the idea of the black Mac is so fashionable. It'd look kinda cheesy, in my opinion.

However, MDN is right on in stating that Enderle just doesn't understand the Mac. The industrial design is really icing on the cake, although it's very nice icing indeed.

As for games, I think the situation will only get better. Heck, I'm playing World of Warcraft on a PowerBook right now and Blizzard is one company that makes it a point to do simultaneous releases of both Windows and Mac versions of ALL their games - same box, same CDs!
Can it be just coincidence that this inclusive approach is one of the reasons Blizzard games always break sales records? Too bad other companies lack the vision and the initiatvie (and the quality of games to make it work).

Oct 10, 05 - 02:01 pm Comment from: jeffharris

Enderle is merely a shill for Microsoft. His articles might be offensive if they weren't written from a base of sheer ignorance. Unfortunately, the articles aren't even funny, so they have ZERO value. My tack is simply not bother giving him more credibility, if spikes in web site hits equal credibility, than he deserves or earns.

That said, in the tireless effort to stay on topic, I'd LOVE to see a dual-core PowerBook! Let's hope Apple gives them a serious video card upgrade as well, say 256MB VRAM (just like some Dells!). AND faster RAM, etc., etc., etc.

My PowerBook is creaking and needs a serious AppleCare financed overhaul (screen, optical drive and motherboard)... just before in runs out... so, I'll be getting a new PowerBook soon, regardless of what's announced.

The were rumors at one time that Apple was researching carbon-fibre bodied PowerBooks, so maybe that's where the black Mac references are coming from? That would be fine with me. My Titanium PowerBook sort of matches the stainless steel frame of mountain bike, so carbon fibre will match the handle bars and bar-ends. How friggin' cool would THAT be?

PLEASE, let it be Wednesday already.............................................

"Mac nano!"

I gotta admit, I was chuckling over this concept the other night.

Picture a Mac mini the size of an iPod. Of course, BYOKDM. Figure one USB port and a display port.

I do NOT want a black computer, even if Apple makes it. Hugely ugly! And NEVER a black keyboard again -- I value my eyesight too much.

Oct 10, 05 - 02:21 pm Comment from: the rug

what ever happened to those rumors about a handheld / smartphone back in 2001/2? could we see something developed from that marketed as a "mac nano?"

Oct 10, 05 - 02:22 pm Comment from: Rasterbator

I would like to Apple offer their superior hardware and software to the masses and let us decide what type of case we want. Check out this site (Apple should buy/partner with this company):

http://www.colorwarepc.com/

Offer a basic case, but ADD this as an option to the Apple Store.

ATTN: MDN Editors

I wonder if you could copy the entire, or even a large majority of, Enderly's stuff. I refuse to click on his actual stories anymore, since that just inflates the perception of his influence (not to mention his ego).

As you mention, he has a tendancy to write inflamatory things about Macs, just because he knows that will generate 'ratings'. Now, if you guys think he's saying something worth reading (even if it is beause he's making an ass of himself again), I'm more than willing to have a look. I just think you'd be doing us all a favor by not having to actually give his sites any hits they otherwise don't deserve. And the more you have here, the less our curiousity of what ELSE he's spewing needs to be indulged.

Maybe you could even have a little note next to the story for the newbies; "We have provided the text of the article so that you don't have to indulge this clown." Who knows - a mass boycott of Mac users might be enough to put him out of business.

Hey, great idea! Why not?

Think of all the campuses with PowerBooks or iBooks that could be in their team's color? Although the price would need to be a bit lower to make it happen.

Wasn't there a Mac model, called "Mac TV" or something, from the dark days that was black? It was "Performa" or "Mac Classic" -esk, had a built in TV tuner, and a remote.

"It is interesting to note that Apple was so scared of HP's entry into this market that they approached HP to co-brand the iPod. Of all the vendors out there HP probably has the best chance of coming up with a product and service that could compete."

Well, I guess I spoke too soon. Apparently Comical Rob E. is on hallucinogens after all. I think I just figured something out though. It seems maybe Rob has a little signal that means "the next thing I write will be absolutely ridiculous, and factually incorrect, and 100% made up", and that signal is "It is interesting to note..." See, he did it a couple weeks ago as well:

"It is interesting to note, that few seem to remember that Microsoft wrote the first MacOS under contract to Apple nearly two decades ago.."

Now we know.

Anyway, his assertion that HP had the best chance of coming up with an iPod killer is ridiculous. Since when has HP been a major player in consumer electronics? Printers, yes. Scanners, certainly. Even computers, but CE? No. OK, the same could be said of Apple a few years ago but Apple is a unique company. Apple could enter just about any market because what they're best at is making something easier and better. I think it'd be safe to argue that Sony had the best chance at developing an iPod killer, and we all know how that ended. Besides, the way I remember it, HP was the one who came to Apple about re-branding the iPod because they thought it foolish to spend money to try and develop something to compete in that vicious market. They were right.

No point in arguing with him though, Rob has his sources and he believes every word they say. Unfortunately they seem to consist of voices in his head.

Oct 10, 05 - 02:56 pm Comment from: zupchuck

If MDN can't figure out if Enderle is trolling for hits, why oh why does MDN keep linking to them? Trying to get some income by linking to the supposed enemy?...

A message I'd like to send to Enderle:

Rob, you mean Apple issued a press release for a special event just to introduce a black Mac? Do you know what kind of negative effect this would have on its stock price? Rob, do you beleive Steve Jobs is as stupid as you and your knucklehead friends. Geez!!!!! Rob, you are a moron.

Oct 10, 05 - 08:34 pm Comment from: MacJack

Enderle's account of HP's licensing of the iPod is at odds with HP itself. Didn't Carly Fiorina say HP knew it couldn't outdo the iPod, so if you can't beat 'em, join 'em??

Oct 10, 05 - 08:59 pm Comment from: MacDoctor

Well…this jerk has said so many stupid things that I don't pay any attention to him any more. And neither should anyone! Gosh! I can't believe that he gets paid good money for spewing such trash!

Here is a quote from Carly Fiorona in the press release that announced the iPod + HP:

"We explored a range of alternatives to deliver a great digital music experience and concluded Apple’s iPod music player and iTunes music service were the best by far."

That really sounds like Apple went begging, huh?
