Enderle: ‘Some people got really excited by the new iPod, but a growing number of people did not’
Wednesday, October 19, 2005 - 07:16 PM EST

"One week after it unveiled the new video iPod, Apple Computer rides into New York today to show the world its latest goodies, but some industry watchers are beginning to wonder how much is too much," Sam Gustin writes for The NY Post in an article headlined, "iPod Maker's Mini-Malaise." "With each highly touted new product launch, the company is flirting with 'Apple fatigue,' said Rob Enderle, a leading technology analyst. The response to the video iPod shows that malaise may have already set in, he said. 'Some people got really excited by the new iPod,' Enderle said, 'but a growing number of people did not.'"

Gustin also quotes Apple Insider's Kasper Jade, "I believe they are pushing it. As long as [Apple chief] Steve Jobs can garner the media's attention and rally them for the events, he will."

MacDailyNews Take: "Some people got really excited by the new iPod, but a growing number of people did not."

Should we be daft enough to demand, oh, we don't know, maybe something called "proof?" Nah, remember that this is Rob "Microsoft wrote the first Mac OS" Enderle. A growing number of people in Redmond certainly did not get excited by the new iPod. That would make sense, but then it wouldn't be coming from Enderle. Enderle's quote, as usual, is utterly meaningless. It's typical Enderlunacy; disposable B.S., which this time happens to be published, appropriately enough, on NY Post fishwrap.

No doubt Enderle has "Apple fatigue," as he's the biggest Microsoft status-quo ass-kisser in the so-called-expert-quotes-for-sale racket and we all know he has absolutely nothing to crow about when it comes to the towelless Redmond Gang. Gustin, meanwhile, shall remain blameless, as we all know what the NY Post is about. Gustin had his angle and he found the quotes to fit that angle. We think they start with the headlines at the Post and then work from there to fill the rest in.

For the record, we agree with Jade, as quoted, 100%.

We're filing Endlerle's quote into the already-jampacked-with-Enderle-quotes folder labeled "B.S. with no supporting evidence."

I doubt Enderle gets really excited about anything, not unless he mixes in his regular dosage of Viagra and scotch first anyway...

I am so happy that Enderle continues to get published. In a few years I hope to slow down and only work as a part time consultant and writer.

And if Enderle can get published, image how easy it will be for me to make a living because I actually know something about technology.

Oct 19, 05 - 08:29 pm Comment from: what

"but a growing number of people did not.'"

Actually, the number of people that "did not" can't grow. Oh, wait, in his fantasy world, they can have "did not".

I wasn't all that excited about the addition of video capability to the iPod, but the model they have to selling video content, while limited in scope, is very exciting. It's not just the hardware.

It is true that not every product has to be a breathless spectacle, but I think the nano, the video devices and services, and the quad G5 and aperture all deserved some amount of individual attention.

Oct 19, 05 - 08:36 pm Comment from: ishufflemyfeet

I have absolutely zero interest in a video ipod. I don't get the attraction, such a small screen.

And I like Apple, I have an ibook, ipod shuffle and a Mac mini.

Oct 19, 05 - 08:57 pm Comment from: R

Psychological warfare, but not very sophisticated. Try to implant doubt so that potential buyers feel negatively labeled if they buy. Problem for M$/Enderle is that ultimately the iPod's luster runs deeper than trendiness. They don't understand that it's popular because it's damn good.

Oct 19, 05 - 09:14 pm Comment from: noiPodforMe

I hate to ever partially agree with anything Enderle writes, but for the life of me I can't figure out why I would ever want an iPod, either audio or video. I simply do not see a need to carry my CD collection with me or to be distracted while reading or working. I can't say that the numbers of people like me are growing, but we certainly exist.

Please don't mistake me for a PC loving troll or a Luddite. I switched to the Mac at home in 1987 and have plenty of high-tech gadgets. Apple makes excellent computers, operating systems, and software. I am sure the iPod also falls into the excellent category, but it is certainly over-hyped.

If the iPod fills a need in your life, then that is fine with me. There is no reason to ridicule people who simply disagree. MDN could use a touch of civility in both their takes on articles and in reply comments posted by readers.

The main thing the iPod is useful for is to attract switchers to the Mac. More market share means more software developers. More software developers means more choice in software for the Mac. I would love to have an alternative to Quicken for personal finance. I would love to have ANY choices in tools to support embedded control system design to dump my Windoze box at work.

Oh, by the way, 8,984,284,023rd post!!!, brought to you by the MDN Magic Word "serious", as in my post sounds too serious.

Oct 19, 05 - 09:20 pm Comment from: MacDude

I'l admit he has a point

I'm rather fatigued myself with all these "must have" Apple toys.

I got so many "latest" iPods that I have given some away, not utilizing the hefy price I paid for them.

Now comes the ViPod.

I have a hefty Dual 2 Ghz G5 and a 30", more power than I use all the time, but useful.

Now comes the Quad Mac.

Like how much is enough?

All the Mac websites are nearly dead, Mac users are burnt out.

Apple is pushing hard, and for good reason. After this holiday season the economy will suffer greatly as normal needed items prices skyrocket and the minimum wage increase was killed in Congress today. :(

We all will have to pay through the nose for all these damm hurricanes.

We need to take these hurricanes out.

noiPodforMe… Like you, i too am iPodless. Don’t have a need or desire for one. Doesn’t fit my needs/lifestyle now. But if they add a built-in microphone and record capability, i’d buy one. Yes, i know there are add-on mic’s, but i want it built-in.

I did, however, hold one of the new pornPods, er, video iPods in my hand today. Looks really nice; very sharp image. It’ll sell well, especially as the porn, er, video offerings increase.

Oct 19, 05 - 09:41 pm Comment from: Good Job

Without taking a position one way or the other, this comment thread is just outstanding, because it just goes to show that no matter what you do you can never make everyone happy. Especially among the “intellectuals” populating internet message boards. You know, the real cream of the crop.

If Apple did not introduce dual core procs into their Power lineup today there would be dozens of people here bitching and crying like little girls that Apple is "dropping the ball", "getting stale", or some variation of that statement.

When Apple makes 3 announcements in 7 weeks we have people here bitching that it's too much. "Boo Hoo, I can't handle all the products", "mommy make them stop". Do us a favor and quit your crying because you are pathetic.

Jesus H Christ!! Did anyone say that you had to buy the newest Apple products? Who is forcing this down your throat exactly? You have a dual 2 GHZ G5? Congratulations go have a cookie. But what exactly does that have to do with the Quads released today?

Should Apple wait until you are ready for a new machine before they release a new one?

And to the person who has so many iPods he has to give them away as gifts; did Steve call you and ask if it was ok to release the Nano and 5th Gen iPod? Because I could have sworn he said he would because he would during the last keynote. I means he knows that you would just have to have it, and he wouldn't want you to spend more money on an iPod needlessly. But once it is released. What are you to do? Stand by and not buy it? That’s just crazy talk. He understands it's like crack and he doesn't want to be a party to addicts like you needing their fix.

I am sure next time he will keep you in mind when he considers releasing an iPod, even if it comes with the capability that people have been waiting to see introduced for over a year now. How insensitive of him.

I mean, all these new products right? It's just too much.

And don't get me started on how the car industry just has to release a new car each year. I have so many I have to give them away for free.

I mean sometimes enough is enough. Know what I mean?
Idiots.

Oct 19, 05 - 09:49 pm Comment from: Noella

Well, I keep watch on what's new coming from apple and get excited about it, but I don't spend the money to buy everything new that comes out. I have to admit that the iPod nano is very cool, but I have no use for it. I bought a G5 earlier this year because I needed a new computer, but just because a dual 2Ghz is here doesn't mean I'll trad up. I'm excited about the new iPod with video, but I'm not going to run out and get one because I just bought an iPod Photo not long ago.

This is technology and every few months something new and better is going to come along. There's no way to buy all these new products anyway. But it doesn't mean I can't get excited about them.

You guys are really way too tough on Rob.

After all, he is the ONLY technology analyst on the planet who combines a knowledge of the IT market with an equal knowledge of plate tectonics and seismology.

Plus, he is the ONLY technology analyst fearless enough to face up to historical reality, which is that MSFT secretly developed Mac OS and then, selflessly, created a quarter-assed copy for itself so that it would forever be seen as the red-headed stepchild of MacOS.

Alternatively, he may have been dropped on his head as a child or be the product of alien experiments conducted to show that its possible to create a near-perfect facsimile of a human being using reconstituted vegetable protein and cow dung.

Remember: Saying that MSFT helped in the original design of the Macintosh is akin to saying that chimpanzees developed Relativity theory and Einstein merely took the credit.

Oct 19, 05 - 11:21 pm Comment from: slike

Jeez...don't you guys know that the more you bitch about him, the more credence he gains. It's the oldest trick in the media handbook. Say something you know is going to piss off a lot of people and your stock goes up. Everyone's going to click through and read the story and the editors will think, hey: this Enderle must have something and they'll ask for more. And everyone knows how sensitive the Apple crowd is. The Mac community is a guaranteed hit generator if you say something unfavourable about their products.

A lot of people may not be that excited about the latest iPod Video. I'm not...so what!

MDN - Why do you flatter him by calling him "ROB" Enderle, like he's cool or some such??? He's at best a "Robert" or better yet a "Bob" or my personal choice "Billy-Bob".

Yep, "Billy-Bob Enderle" sounds far more appropriate. Shows the due amount of respect this profound, esteemed, intellectual or micropenile crapology deserves.

His latest effort disappointed me a bit, compared to previous noteable efforts, such as is theory that the iMac is unstable in earthquakes, this latest effort barely registered as a tremor on the Fudster Scale.

(Enderle) a '...leading technology analyst'

Say what?

The Enderle Group, is funded and trained by MS to attack Apple when it threatens the MS 'Gates' (good doggie). The man is nothing but a 'puppet on a string'. The companies that use his name or publish his articles know how he rubs people the wrong way and in so doing, they get much needed feedback, must be getting desparate. They don't quote him or use his articles because hes intelligent.

AM, haven't had my full dose of coffee yet

Oct 20, 05 - 07:27 am Comment from: MacDude

RE: Good Job

I think the problem here is Apple is overdoing it in the iPod area, coming out with just too many "must have" gadgets too fast.

Out comes the Mini, oops scratch that, now it's the Nano with color screen, opps if you waited a bit you could have gotten a bigger screen and video because the ViPod got released a month later for a hundred bucks more.

Heck my 3rd gen iPod with black and white screen, which works perfectly, is already obsolete. But people are saying "isn't there a new one out?" and secretly laugh to themselves we are getting caught up with this rapid "must buy the latest gadget craze" like a bunch of fscking stupid lemmings.

Sure the PowerMac G5 needed a major update, and although the Quad has four cores, it doesn't neccessarily mean it's as powerful as four processors.

So Apple ran with the ball, but the market is saturated and the fans are leaving the stadium.

Apple is killing themselves.

Oct 20, 05 - 07:50 am Comment from: Joe

The fact that Enderle sees Apple coming out with new products and versions of exiting products so tiring is because hes used to the rate at which MS comes out with their products. Years between them.

Apple; energetic, innovative, passionate, quality minded

Enderle/MS: used and dried up, on prunes, couldn't put a straight line between 2 points (ever), can't think so copy (its easier)

Hes just not use to the Apple pace and great desireable products that work.....

Oct 20, 05 - 07:58 am Comment from: Mozfan

I have to admit that since I switched almost two years ago, I have felt the need to keep up with all mac-related news and I really do wish I could by every new thing Apple comes up with.

I never felt the need to purchase anything new for the PC until I just had to upgrade to run current software.

Since switching, it is more than just needing the latest and greatest. Since the original eMac purchase, I have added an Airport Express network, 5 iPods (2 1st G minis, 1 512MB shuffle, 1 20GB color, and a black 4GB nano), 1 iBook, 2 Macintosh Classics, 1 Performa 6200CD, and (finally) a G5 iMac.

I consider myself extremely lucky in that I wanted to buy an iMac a few weeks ago but decided to wait. Turned out to be the right move with the new generation being announced. The price went down and the feature content went up.

I have found this is usual with Apple and I have come to expect it. I am glad to have this problem. I like knowing that Apple incorporates innovation and improvement as soon as possible.

I also like working with a system and company who cares so much about the products they produce.

Perhaps it's because I am such a recent convert, but I can still remember the frustration and dissappointment of using a PC and how enlightening it was to switch.

I think it's possible that some on this site are PC using trolls pretending to be Mac users (although I'm not accusing anyone in this thread, I just mean in general). I also think it's possible that some here have been using Macs so long, they forgot how horrible the alternative is. (and no one can convince me that "XP is better than it used to be" we "upgraded" to XP from NT at work and it has been one nightmare after another)

All things considered, I can see how some (like Billy-Bob) who work for Msft are sick and tired of Apple's latest "one more thing", but for those of us gadet-heads who love Apple and their products, it has been one heck of a ride (with no end in sight).

~M

PS- I have spoken to many people at work about iPods and I always tell them if they don't care much about music, they don't really need one. If they love music and have a collection they like to listen to regularly, or if they have very varied tastes, then iPod is a must have and it will change their life.

The way we Mac users whip ourselves into a frenzy about these announcements, there's no way any product can ever live up to the hype. So we're bound to have a bit of disappointment now and then.

As for folks like Enderle, well... every new product announcement from MS seems to be about fixing what's broken (MS is all about security now). It's always about bitter one-upmanship rather than true creativity.

I'd say he's just jealous. And yes, jealousy can cause "fatigue."

There's one born every day (no, hopefully not an idiot like Enderle),
so you could say that about anything that newborn babies do or don't do.

So, without any justification to back any numbers, I have to admit that the statement is statistically correct. Devoid of meaning but correct nonetheless.

Enderle is an asshole. He is out of touch with reality, a pure zealot in the world of technology. I don't even know why this website even talks about this butthead anymore. He's not worth listening to and when he opens up his piehole he spews about stuff he knows nothing about.

I have been in the IT business for 20 years developing Windows apps for business. To be honest, I'd take the Mac OS ANY DAY over Windows. The fact is that Jobs and Co. have it right and some boneheads out there just don't want to accept that. Enderle is the biggest moron out there.
