ESPN PodCenter now on Apple’s iPhone
Friday, August 10, 2007 - 03:49 PM EST

"ESPN is bringing ESPN PodCenter to Apple's iPhone on Aug. 13, "bringing with it a network of 35 different podcasts and a portfolio of 15 to 20 sponsors," Andrew Hampp reports for AdAge.

"PodCenter will also relaunch Monday with updated content on ESPN.com and its extension on iTunes, including 'Off Mikes,' a series of downloadable animated shorts spun off from 'Mike & Mike in the Morning,' a talk show, and a podcast led by former NFL coach Bill Parcells, former all-pro wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson and 'NFL Insider' Chris Mortensen," Hampp reports.

Hampp reports, "ESPN Mobile continues to deliver breaking updates and scores to subscribers' phones, but Marc Horine, ESPN's VP-digital partnerships and radio, said he is working with his partners at Verizon to expand the content there as well. 'It's not as easy to deliver podcasts through mobile devices right now,' he said. 'iPhone allows us because the Safari internet browser takes you to the special player. Most [phones] don't have the functionality the iPhone has... We're constantly trying to innovate building applications to better serve sports fans, and the iPhone player was developed to make it better to consume content.. What's great about the [PodCenter] player is it's now wherever you are.'"

Just praying Apple doesn't waste a front page icon on ESPN.

As far as I'm concerned, Apple wasted an icon on You Tube.

God, the last thing I want on my iPhone is Bill Parcells...

It's nice to see a big company like ESPN get specific with the iPhone. I think they should do another interface like this for checking scores.

i just checked it out and it works great in my iPhone! While i'm not a big devotee of ESPN this does bode well for other firms to laungh similar efforts. Wouldn't a BBC or CNN (or both) site be awesome?!

Guys, understand Apple gets paid by YouTube (AKA Google) for having that icon/application on the home page, in the location it is at.

Count on Apple including more paid placement applications on the home page in the future.

As for ESPN, sounds good to me, I'm a sports guy.

In the future, Apple is likely to have enough applications to start bidding wars, and/or giving the iPhone user the ability to customize the home screeen with the XX number of apps Apple has for the home screen. This lets the market decide, and whatever icons users want on the home page - those are the one's pony-ing up to Apple with their bank account.

If you want to move and change the home screen, their is a great hack for that out there already.
