Even in Apple’s absence, iPhone looms large over Mobile World Congress
Friday, February 13, 2009 - 03:59 PM EDT

"Next week, more than 50,000 people will descend upon Barcelona for the GSMA Mobile World Congress, the largest mobile event of the year. Attendees will hear from some of the biggest names in the business, from Vodafone and Telefonica to Verizon Wireless, Qualcomm, Microsoft and MySpace," Tricia Duryee reports for mocoNews.

"My colleague Dianne See Morrison and I will be there from MocoNews to cover the events live," Duryee reports. "But already, it’s clear that one topic will be in heavy rotation during the week: the move by handset-makers and carriers to ape the success of Apple and roll-out their own app stores."

Duryee reports, "Samsung has already confirmed that it will make an app store announcement during the show, while Microsoft is also rumored to be unveiling its store, codenamed SkyMarket, at MWC. Today, Google got a jump on the news by announcing that it was opening up the Android Market to developers who want to charge for their applications. Other announcements are clearly on the horizon: RIM’s BlackBerry store is set to launch any day, and even Nokia s expected to make an app store announcement next week. It doesn’t stop with handset makers. There’s even hints that wireless carriers are ready to jump in to this arena."

Duryee reports, "Even though Apple told us it won’t be attending MWC, its impact on the industry will be felt everywhere."

Damn, Apple thinks, creates, and deploys.... evernone else just photocopies at a fractions of the cost. Go figure!

Fire Up the mimeograph machines.

Let Apple Innovate everyone else will just mimeograph it and try to get lucky.

All the other companies can launch all the app stores they want. But unless they can come up with a device that truly competes with the iPhone, I'm not sure how successful those app stores will be. To me, it's not much different from the iTunes music store in that the iPod drives its music and video sales.

Dang... if the quickest way to identify the market leader is to see who everyone else is imitating, then Apple is definitely well in the lead.

@The Mac That Roared

You don't get it. It's not about coming up with something that truly competes with the iPhone. It's about coming up with something Joe and Jane Sixpack THINKS competes with the iPhone. Who cares if it's half backwards, half works, and is hard to use? As long as Joe and Jane Sixpack thinks it competes, they'll buy it. Perception is reality. That's why we see all these other companies trying to copy Apple. If they could get a few sucker...customers - they'll be happy.

Those of us who know better will stick with the iPhone.

Peace.

Time to start thinking about what "blood" phrase MDN should use when these other app stores are closed?

Feb 13, 09 - 07:08 pm Comment from: SirROM

Monkey Boy see, Monkey Boy do (or is that do do?)

@ Mark

”Blood on the App Store's “Buy App” button“ sung to the tune of ”25 Thousand Apps on the Store, 25 Thousand Apps. Another store down, 4 more around, 26 Thousand Apps on the Store.”

Sometimes, it is just too easy...

Feb 13, 09 - 07:17 pm Comment from: twodales

@Mark
That's easy "Blood on the App Store's download button"

Any App Store's is only useful if the phone's is useable and good.

So far the iPhone is the only phone that makes sense, just as the iPod is the only music player that makes sense.

At least Apple drives innovation, even if most of it is copycat stuff, doubtless driven by porridge-brain suits.

Fire Up the mimeograph machines.

You give the competition too much credit! Mimeo? They're still on Dittos - those of you of at least a certain number of years will remember those - illegible, faded looking, usually purple, and we were always trying to sniff the fumes of the were fresh off the press.

iTunes is key, in my opinion.

What separates iPhone from what all of you say about other phones out there (because I haven't used any other smart phones - I went straight from a "dumb" phone to an iPhone) is not just ease of use, but ease of synchronization. I hook up to my iMac, fire up iTunes, and I can sync events, contacts, apps, music, and video, just like that. iTunes, which is nearly ubiquitous in both the Mac and p.c. worlds, is the weapon no other carrier has.

I suppose that on a p.c. one can't sync events or contacts as easily but that's your choice for not going with OS X.

Apple leads and the rest scramble to catch up - as usual.

"... It's not about coming up with something that truly competes with the iPhone. It's about coming up with something Joe and Jane Sixpack THINKS competes with the iPhone. ..."

EXACTLY.
One does not have to outsell the iPhone to be a business success.
One only need make lots of money off of the less discriminating consumer.

If my (imaginary) company copied Apple's products to the limits of legality, and then cleared 100 million dollars in profit, what do I care if Apple makes billions serving the others that we're not targeting?

What about some of the business "failures" that were first touted as "iPod / iTunes / iPhone Killers", and then shuttered their offices after a year or two?
I'm sure a few of those CEOs fabricated lovely "retirement packages" before the tank emptied.
They might now be living permanently on a tropical island, enjoying their sunset margaritas and days of golf and barbeques, and toasting themselves on fulfilling their business-and-life goals.

With its hordes of cash Apple is working on the next big thing while all these other idiots copy what they've done. They still can't compete because Apple controls the hardware and software. It's total unity of design.

Excellent!

"Who cares if it's half backwards, half works, and is hard to use?"

Don't forget to ask Ballmer for a commission - this sounds like MS' next slogan!
