ExtremeTech: Microsoft’s Windows Vista simply can’t compete with Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard
Monday, November 12, 2007 - 11:40 AM EST

"As you probably already know, Apple recently released the final version of its Mac OS X Leopard operating system. And, judging by its initial sales (more than 2 million copies sold already), Apple seems to have hit a major home run. So what's the big deal about Leopard and why should you care? In this review we'll answer those questions and we'll take a look at what's good and bad in Leopard," Jim Lynch reports for ExtremeTech.

"Some of you might be thinking 'So what? I don't own a Mac, what the hell do I care about Apple's stupid operating system, Jim?' Well that's a fair sentiment if you're not a Mac owner since Leopard doesn't run on any other hardware...yet. But as we saw with Apple's switch to Intel processors a while back, what seems incredible or even impossible can sometimes be quite possible. There may come a day when Leopard or its successor is available on non-Apple hardware," Lynch reports.

"Plus it's worth knowing what Leopard has to offer because Microsoft tends to use Apple as its research and development lab at times. In other words, if there's a great feature on Leopard that's not on Windows then you can bet Microsoft will steal...er...excuse me...borrow the idea for a future version of Windows at some point. Who knows...you may even see some of Leopard included in a future Windows Vista super-duper mega-patch or 'service pack' or whatever Microsoft is calling it these days," Lynch reports.

"I have run Windows Vista Ultimate and I find it quite underwhelming compared to what Leopard offers. Microsoft just didn't deliver the goods with Vista the way that Apple has with Mac OS X Leopard, and there's just no other way to put it," Lynch reports. "Vista is an example of what happens when Microsoft takes its eye off of operating systems so that they can compete with Google. Vista might not have been such a turd if Microsoft had only focused the appropriate amount of time, resources, and attention. Alas, it is what it is and it simply can't compete with Leopard as a desktop operating system."

"I'll keep Vista on my Mac for the times I need to run a Windows-only game and/or test Windows applications for reviews and columns. But there's no way I'd run it as my primary operating system. Life is just too short to bother farting around with Windows Vista, I've got better things to do with my time than spend it on fixing or tweaking Microsoft's mistakes," Lynch reports.

I highly, highly doubt this. At least, not in any legit way anyway. Just don't foresee Apple licensing out their OS… they've seen the mistake that is thru M$.

That whole paragraph about mediocreSoft using Apple as R&D;is classic. I LIKE IT!!!

Surely the Tang would like to comment...

Great article.

Lets see Thurrott, Enderie, and some other MS Shill counter this

Don't hold your breath for OS X to run (authorized) on non-Apple hardware! Just buy a Mac!

Nov 12, 07 - 12:17 pm Comment from: Mark

I agree with the idea that Apple may one day sell OS X for non-Apple computers. That day won't happen however until OS X marketshare is much greater than it is now.

OS X on any old hardware = tech nightmare

Jobs is convinced that owning the whole widget and the user's experience is critical.

I agree.

The two worst things about Windows are snotty Windows users and even snottier Windows IT people.

Both really, really suck big time!

"if Microsoft had only focused the appropriate amount of time, resources, and attention"

The problem is: they already poured 6 billion down the drain, with mediocre results. Would another billion have resulted in a better product? Would another year have made it more unobtrusive to use?
Steve Jobs used the right words (in front of an analyst-panel):
"If it was just about wrting cheques, I wouldn't be sitting here".

Sums it up really nicely.

Bill Gates is happy, Steve Ballmer is happy. They just made money off of you.

What´s the differece between a person that buys Vista for his Mac or Windows PC? Nothing. Bill G. laughs all the way to the bank.

"I'll keep Vista on my Mac for the times I need to run a Windows-only game..."

Gee, is a computer game really a 'need' for some?

It's hard to respect a reviewer that has such needs.

Nov 12, 07 - 02:09 pm Comment from: Raymond from DC

Funny, Apple has no trouble keeping its "eye on the ball" as it competes with Nokia, et.al. on phones, Sandisk and others on media players, the music companies on media distribution, Toshiba and others on high-end notebooks. Yet it still cleans Microsoft's clock in delivering a next generation OS on Intel hardware.

As to OS X on non-Apple hardware, it's already there, but only as OEM suppliers of Apple-branded gear. That's likely the best they can expect. Perhaps HP could be allowed to make gear for Apple that HP would then sell into their Enterprise accounts.

Nov 12, 07 - 03:00 pm Comment from: Big Al

For a price, Apple could Certify any part or mother board design needed. For that matter, Apple could limit the list of acceptable parts and control the Mac using PC market that way.

On the other hand HP and Dell couldn't even sell iPods, what makes anyone think they could sell Macs.

I'm sorry, but they had 5+ years to deliver Longhorn, er, VIsta, and they didn't start looking at Google until about a year or so ago...

@Mike T.

> I'm sorry, but they had 5+ years to deliver Longhorn, er, VIsta, and they didn't start looking at Google until about a year or so ago...

Actually, Microsoft scrapped what they had done during the first 3+ years and started over from an existing Windows code-base. Then they spent the last 18 months (or so) scrambling to graft on mostly cosmetic changes to make Vista look "newer" than XP. That's why Vista is such as mess, even by Microsoft standards.

This scenario was amazingly similar to Apple's overly ambitious Copland project, which was supposed to replace System 7 (the classic Mac OS). Instead, the project was cancelled and some of the superficial features of Copland were integrated into the existing Mac OS 7.6 to create Mac OS 8 (and 9). It seems Microsoft can't help copying Apple a decade later, even when Apple makes a huge mistake.

Nov 13, 07 - 12:48 am Comment from: Larry

Well it can't compete with Tiger either then in that case. I think i prefer it better. Sure Leopard's good, but nothing realy new except extra eye candy and a realy clumsy way of adding/opening ports.

You're right, they are dumb. Do they not realize that we 'Mac fanboys' know the memory thru Apple is ridiculously overpriced and we have the intelligence to get it elsewhere and install our selves? They're dumb, so so dumb.
