Yes, some Alaska schools know what they're doing. But others, such as the entire Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, compromising the most populated area in Alaska, completely DUMPED Macs a few years back in favor of PC's. Obviously operating budget (higher with Windows) and state of the art technology available only with Macs, as well as individual preference, are of no concern to them. No doubt money changing hands, job security issues for the techs, or simply the stupidity of those who made the decision may all be part of that. It would be nice if they would look at what other schools in Alaska are doing and reconsider their previous foolish choice.

Cool. I used to live near Fairbanks. I remember way back in the 1980s when the public library in Fairbanks got touch screen computers to browse the library's stock. It was impressive at the time. I was shocked when I moved south to Lower 48 and saw how far behind the times many libraries were.

I'm glad the schools in my district is Mac based.

Breaks my heart. A whole generation of kids who will be completely unprepared for the real world of business computing because their shortsighted school administration opted for namby-pamby toy MACs. Tech literacy counts most in the workplace and these MAC based schools aren't helping develop the next batch of cubicle workers for businesses who have the good sense to depend on Microsoft solutions.

The ability to draft a memo in Microsoft Word that covers your ass when corporate is looking for a scapegoat and your boss won't step in to help is critical. Where on a MAC do you make a sign that declares "The breakroom refrigerator will be completely cleaned out every 2 weeks—no exceptions"? On a Windows machine you can do it in Powerpoint or Word. This is sad news indeed.

What are you talking about?

The computers did not go to the young, they went to the crotchety old teachers. The kids are lucky to get pen and paper.

Just like in big corporations the ones that will get the least done with the technology get the best, and the ones who do the work get what's left.

My school district in New York state, faced with budget cuts (due in part to poor decisions on the Director of Technology's part) is dropping Macs in favor of PC's. The reason? You can put more PC's on desks than Macs for a given amount of money, plain and simple. Of course, we could have retained the Macs, but the afore mentioned idiot agreed to spend $2 million per year for outsourced tech support, tech support that is Mac clueless, consists of one network specialist who's here 2 or 3 days a week and a full-time Windows duct-tape and bailing wire specialist. Pathetic.
