Fairbanks, Alaska schools get more Apple MacBooks
Tuesday, April 08, 2008 - 05:05 PM EST

"Food, raffle prizes and 78 new MacBook laptops made Monday’s Lathrop High School staff meeting [in Fairbanks, Alaska] a little more lively than usual," Christi Hang reports for The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.

"Providing laptops to all teachers in the district is part of Technology Blueprint, a program designed to put information technology into classrooms. Lathrop, Joy Elementary School and Ryan Middle School are part of the fourth and final MacBook rollout for the year. The teachers at Lathrop received MacBooks with 2 gigabyes of RAM and 13-inch screens," Hang reports.

Hang reports, Helen Clark, the district’s executive director of instructional technology, said students are a lot more technology savvy and school districts need to keep up with the students. 'It’s no longer a question of should we but when,' Clark said."

Hang reports, "Clark said almost 600 MacBooks have been handed out this year, and more than 350 will be distributed in the fall."

MacDailyNews Note: Apple Macs have quite the presence in Alaskan schools via a statewide 1 to 1 learning initiative in which, to date, over 55 pilot school sites in 18 districts have received Apple notebook computers for all students and teachers. More info here.

How the mighty have fallen... from Prime Minister of New Zealand to director of technology at a remote school district. Hell may not have frozen over but I bet it looks like it in Fairbanks. Doesn't it Ms. Clark?

Apr 08, 08 - 04:40 pm Comment from: Living in Alaska

Yes, some Alaska schools know what they're doing. But others, such as the entire Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, compromising the most populated area in Alaska, completely DUMPED Macs a few years back in favor of PC's. Obviously operating budget (higher with Windows) and state of the art technology available only with Macs, as well as individual preference, are of no concern to them. No doubt money changing hands, job security issues for the techs, or simply the stupidity of those who made the decision may all be part of that. It would be nice if they would look at what other schools in Alaska are doing and reconsider their previous foolish choice.

Cool. I used to live near Fairbanks. I remember way back in the 1980s when the public library in Fairbanks got touch screen computers to browse the library's stock. It was impressive at the time. I was shocked when I moved south to Lower 48 and saw how far behind the times many libraries were.

I'm glad the schools in my district is Mac based.

In Alaska the sizzling heat radiating off of MacBooks might actually be welcome.

Breaks my heart. A whole generation of kids who will be completely unprepared for the real world of business computing because their shortsighted school administration opted for namby-pamby toy MACs. Tech literacy counts most in the workplace and these MAC based schools aren't helping develop the next batch of cubicle workers for businesses who have the good sense to depend on Microsoft solutions.

The ability to draft a memo in Microsoft Word that covers your ass when corporate is looking for a scapegoat and your boss won't step in to help is critical. Where on a MAC do you make a sign that declares "The breakroom refrigerator will be completely cleaned out every 2 weeks—no exceptions"? On a Windows machine you can do it in Powerpoint or Word. This is sad news indeed.

Your potential. Our passion.™

and when did Macs stop using Word and Powerpoint?
Really dumb argument ZuneTang! If you want to try to keep up with the world,
you better know your facts. Simply unbelievable.

What are you talking about?

The computers did not go to the young, they went to the crotchety old teachers. The kids are lucky to get pen and paper.

Just like in big corporations the ones that will get the least done with the technology get the best, and the ones who do the work get what's left.

Northern states seem to get it???

My school district in New York state, faced with budget cuts (due in part to poor decisions on the Director of Technology's part) is dropping Macs in favor of PC's. The reason? You can put more PC's on desks than Macs for a given amount of money, plain and simple. Of course, we could have retained the Macs, but the afore mentioned idiot agreed to spend $2 million per year for outsourced tech support, tech support that is Mac clueless, consists of one network specialist who's here 2 or 3 days a week and a full-time Windows duct-tape and bailing wire specialist. Pathetic.
