Firefighters battle 3-alarm blaze at Apple HQ in Cupertino
Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 09:18 AM EST

According to reports, Santa Clara Countyfirefighters have put out a blaze that burned for more than three hours at the headquarters of Apple Inc. The first reports of smoke came at about 10 p.m. Tuesday night, and the fire was contained by 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The three-alarm fire scorched the roof and the second level at one of the six buildings on the company's northern California campus in Cupertino, according to a report from The Associated Press. Local television reports say that the fire was at a "Research and Development" building and that there was extensive fire and water damage. About 100 Apple employees were working late at the time of the fire.

"It was extinguished early Wednesday morning and no one was injured," AP reports. "Senior Communications Dispatcher Rafael Salcedo says the fire was 'not very big, but there is going to be a lot of smoke damage.'"

MacDailyNews Take: We blame Milton Waddams. Luckily nobody was injured, but the damn iTeleporter is going to have to be completely rebuilt.

Oh, the horrah! (read in your best Long Island accent).

I hope no one (or thing) was hurt.

Apple is always 'smoking' the also rans.

Aug 13, 08 - 08:25 am Comment from: Cubert

"Luckily nobody was injured"

OK. Answered that question. Now for the thing part.

I wonder if any of the fire fighters snapped pics with their cell phones. I'm sure bogus ones will show up soon on a few sites - just look for that Photoshop fire filter.

Is the guy who headed up the MobileMe launch missing?

Aug 13, 08 - 08:26 am Comment from: MacSheikh

I heard there was a witness who saw two suspicious looking guys running away from the building just before the fire started. And they looked a lot like Gates and Ballmer!

Aug 13, 08 - 08:26 am Comment from: Bartsimpsonhead

Where was Balmer when this was starting?

I'm not surprised Apple have aircon units in their R&D;facility – their egg-heads must generate huge amounts of heat from all the thinking they do!

And if it gets hot, they're not likely to open the Windows now, are they!

Aug 13, 08 - 08:26 am Comment from: macnut222

I'd check if Michael Dell or Rob Enderle were near the site.

The redesign of the PowerBook 5300 has been delayed indefinitely.

Aug 13, 08 - 08:30 am Comment from: sl

any bets those firefighters had to sign nda's to enter the place first

Aug 13, 08 - 08:31 am Comment from: John C. Randolph

Valley Green Six isn't what I would call Apple HQ. It's still in Cupertino, but it's about a quarter mile away from Infinite Loop.

The building is mostly office space for IS&T;staff. I think the main upshot will be that a hundred people or so will be working from home while Apple figures out what to do for replacement office space.

Didn't somebody say lately that Steve Job was running around with a Flame thrower over the Mobileme problem?

Aug 13, 08 - 08:33 am Comment from: Nick Fury

A pile of splintered office chairs was discovered as the origin of the blaze.

Aug 13, 08 - 08:33 am Comment from: me

Still nothing about Apple taking the lead in security holes from Microsoft. I suppose this site should be called Mac Daily "Good" News.

What is a 3-alarm blaze? I have never heard about that before. Is there such a thing as 2-alarm blaze etc?

Aug 13, 08 - 08:59 am Comment from: Cubert

I bet some coder was burning the midnight oil.

Either that or his Ramen noodles caught on fire.

Aug 13, 08 - 09:03 am Comment from: @JAYGEE

3-alarm means three fire stations responded.

Aug 13, 08 - 09:04 am Comment from: Nick Fury

"What is a 3-alarm blaze?"
Usually, it means that three different fire engine companies (or fire stations) receive the call to go fight one fire but this protocol varies widely.

The one-l lama, he's a priest.
The two-l llama, he's a beast.
And I will bet a silk pajama
There isn't any three-l lllama.

Perhaps they were trying the heavy romured iRocket ?

Aug 13, 08 - 09:05 am Comment from: Big Al

Patched vulnerabilities are good things.

Exploited vulnerabilities are another thing altogether.

Apple has zero.

Microsoft, not so much.

Aug 13, 08 - 09:06 am Comment from: jg2000

Are they changing the company name to Apple Crisp?

Aug 13, 08 - 09:10 am Comment from: Steve516

Any tragedy such as this should be treated with some amount of respect and humanity. We are fortunate that no one was injured or killed when this happened. The loss of property and all the associated clean up and repairs will be costly.

This is not a time for joking around folks. If you are a troll, find another topic to be involved with.

I was so looking forward to an 3.2Ghz IBM powered machine!

Aug 13, 08 - 09:16 am Comment from: HMCIV

Remember that article a while back about Eddy Cue taking over MobileMe. Something about Jobs and a flame thrower?

Take back my last remark. I just found out someone accidentally tripped the iPhone app "Kill Switch".

"Hi, Sony? This is Steve Jobs. Listen, you guys still haven't fixed those damn batteries. Look, don't tell me you haven't got any evidence of an issue, half our R&D;building just burned down!"

Aug 13, 08 - 09:24 am Comment from: madgunde

Nobody said making a dent in the universe didn't have it's risks...

MacSheikh -

"I heard there was a witness who saw two suspicious looking guys running away from the building just before the fire started. And they looked a lot like Gates and Ballmer!"

Nah, they wouldn't torch their own R&D;department.

Aug 13, 08 - 09:29 am Comment from: Andy

Well, the fireman himself the biggest danger was from smoke damage, and not fire burning everything in its path - so that means the fire was somewhat contained. That in itself is bad enough, but be grateful Cupertino is still standing.

Plus, Apple have more than enough money to renovate the affected area, but the fire will probably set a few product timetables back, perhaps?

Aug 13, 08 - 09:34 am Comment from: almux

Woaw! This R&D;section must really be into fancy new Apple concepts!!!!!!!!!!

Aug 13, 08 - 09:45 am Comment from: Geo

One hundred people working late at 10pm in one building? No wonder Apple is cranking out products at breakneck speed with a fraction of the MS employee headcount.

Aug 13, 08 - 09:45 am Comment from: Olmecmystic

Everybody's got jokes today, huh?

Some of you missed your calling.

Peace.
Olmecmystic cool smile

P.S. Glad nobody got hurt. Apple's R&D;personnel MAY be the most valuable on staff.

Aug 13, 08 - 09:50 am Comment from: Joe

Just wandering if this was included in microsoft 500 million campaign against apple. Snow leopard will be delayed.

Aug 13, 08 - 09:51 am Comment from: almux

Hum!...After ripe reflexion... Coudn't it be Balmer who managed to sneak in there with a match?

Aug 13, 08 - 09:52 am Comment from: MacRaven

Now the fire crew will have to sign non disclosure agreements.

Aug 13, 08 - 10:00 am Comment from: Hard Nard

Zune Tang was seen running from the building yelling "Viva La Vista, Babee!!"

Aug 13, 08 - 10:01 am Comment from: Macintosh

It's probably the Mobile Me servers...

Aug 13, 08 - 10:10 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Have they checked where Steve Ballmer is lurking?
