‘fring’ for Apple iPhone, iPod touch debuts in Apple’s App Store (VoIP, IM, and more)
Friday, October 03, 2008 - 06:19 PM EST

fring is a mobile internet service and community that enables you to access and interact with your social networks on-the-go, make free calls and live chat with all your fring, Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, SIP, Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM friends using your iPhone's and/or iPod touch's internet connection.

fring saves money by letting you make affordable local and international calls to landline and regular cellular numbers using your SkypeOut/SkypeIn account or almost any internet voice service (SIP) such as SIPNET, EuteliaVoIP, VoIPVoIP and VoIPTalk.

fring does all the work for you, automatically logging you into your favorite WiFi hotspots so you save time and hassle without having to configure your WiFi access points each time.

More info and download link for fring via Apple iTunes' App Store (free) here.

i did a search and don't see it on the app store on my phone

Last time I looked on the Apple store, the new headphones with the mic for the Touch were not available and no other headphone/mic that I tried would work.

I'd like to know where you get them!

It's there, but the Skype app in it don't work.

I'd rather have the dude in the video. He's hot.

I've been using the Truphone VOIP app since shortly after the App Store opened and it works fine. Why no mention here?

This works quite well. Had some stutter on the gchat voip session , so i used skype and it worked perfect.

i just wish it ran in the background, or apple had its notification service up. cmon!

How can you use VoIP on a Touch? It doesn't have any mic input.

Oct 04, 08 - 01:55 pm Comment from: Greg

@Rich

This will only work with the new Touch models that just came out - and then you either have to get Apple's special headphone/mic combo for the Touch (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA850G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Ng&mco=MTcyOTAyNw&p=1&s=topSellers) which isn't available yet or one of the TouchMic's from http://touchmic.com/

The NEW iPod Touch

I tried it, and the Skype test call where you talk for 10 seconds and they play back what you've said. It was unintelligible, had major distortion and breakups. I had a very strong wi-fi signal to an Airport Extreme, so bandwidth wasn't the problem (at least on my end). I'll wait and see what iCall can do, whenever they release it.

I'm sick of Skype dragging its feet. Skype should have had its own iPhone app at the App Store's launch.

Oct 05, 08 - 09:20 am Comment from: iestynw

Apparently the OEM iPhone headset works with 2G iPod Touches.

The new headphones with mic have volume control on as well.

Fantastic. My Optus service failed so I skyped from the iPhone and it worked brilliantly. Thanks for the article & especially for the app - maybe if a few of us donate - they'll get great results for all phones & software and programme the other suggested upgrades.

Oct 05, 08 - 01:04 pm Comment from: alansky

Duh... Shouldn't iPod touch owners who want iPhone functionality have bought an iPhone in the first place???

Oct 06, 08 - 09:24 am Comment from: Synthmeister

@ alansky

Not if they don't want the $70 per month telco fees.

Or they can't stand/can't get AT&T;coverage or 3G.

Fring and Skype, although great that they're being offered on iPhones and iPod Touchs isn't really the news here. Apple making a microphone headset that works with the new iPod Touch, now that's news. Thanks a lot for all three developers.

Oct 06, 08 - 11:29 am Comment from: Johnny

MAYBE it works with the new earphones or maybe not..there's no confirmation on that yet..and who knows when apple will actually ship the earphones that MIGHT or MIGHT NOT work with Touch?

Oct 06, 08 - 11:37 am Comment from: StarkReality

@Bon. Skype would be in violation of Apple's and ATTs terms and conditions that clearly probit any form of VOIP. Skype won't even discuss the iPhone out of fear that such discussions might jeopardize any future possibilities. It's a shame when you consider that Skype runs on my ancient 5 year old Palm device and every Windows mobile device.
