I think that is great that folks are able to do that. Personally, I rather spend the extra money and just get a Mac Mini. However some people like to show it can be done. To the TV hacker community - congratulations.

I bet apple will make a Mac Mini with Apple TV Capabilities or the other way around.

I am really happy that the AppleTV seems to be so "hackable". I think as long as the hackers do not circumvent the DRM which Apple/Content Providers require to make the AppleTV/iTunes/iPod ecosystem operate, then Apple should indeed turn a blind eye to this activity in the hacker community.

It is good for AppleTV's image as a machine for all purposes and this will help sell many more boxes over time!

since it has an intel processor, can it run Boot Camp?

I don't know what the physical limitations of doing so are, Spark, I do know that some people have already cobbled it together, I know the licence on the box says you can't run it on non Apple hardware tho..

But since the Apple TV is Apple hardware its probly okay, esp given it already runs a version of OS X anyway.

What does running OSX on an Apple TV or a regular PC have to do with "Ballmer"???????

For your information, there are no longer any Windows boxes in my home (although I am required to use one at work). I have all Macs, and 1 Dell PC that runs OSX86.. At any rate, I don't remember making any mention of MS or "Ballmer" in my post..

My point is this. OSX is an excellent operation system what runs very well on ANY PC (and only doesn't easily because Apple doesn't allow it to).... As the Apple TV and iPhone have shown, it also runs on other platforms as well... My "Junky Dell" (as you fanboys like to call them) was cheaper than my Intel Mini, is upgradeable, and is much faster - yet they both run OSX very well....

Apple's hardware is underpowered and overpriced. PERIOD! If they open up OSX to all PC's, it will run quite well... But they will sell very few of their computers (except to people like you who droll over Steve's "It's really beautiful"")

Apple made 7 billion dollars profit on 75% of iPod market and 5% of the PC market.

Microsoft made 13 billion dollars profit on 95% of the OS market and is losing their ass on the hardware game and HD-DVD market to unnown billions.

Apple doesn't sell hardware to the low margin sergment of the computing market, because there is little profit to be had there. It's a drag to the company.

My Dell (that is running OSX) cost $699 with a 120 Gig HDD, keyboard, mouse, a real video card, 1 Gig of RAM)... I know, it's a junky "low end margin budget" computer...

Now My Mini, let me tell ya.. Came with 512 Meg of memory, shitty integrated graphics (with no way to upgrade), and how about that slow little hard drive ... You can use a putty knife to open it, and then disassemble about 10 things to get at the ram to add some (I did this).. I put it an additional Gig (and it only cost double what industry standard RAM costs).. WOOO HOOOO Fanboy!!!

Hacking the kernel of OS X to add SSE3 emulation (CPU extensions needed by OSX and not available on the Apple TV) is not all that difficult. Remember the MACH kernel is open source, and code to do this emulation already exists.

Even though it's stuck at 1GHz and with only 256MB RAM, a fully functional Mac (less keyboard and display) for only $299 will be interesting to some folks. You need to own or have access to an Intel Mac to do this, and it's certainly a crippled Mac, but still, for only $299, it could be worth it.
