Gartner: Apple grows shipments 31 percent in Q2 2005, moves from 5th to 4th in U.S. market share
Monday, July 18, 2005 - 08:53 PM EST

"The PC market grew more than expected during the second quarter, thanks to mobile demand, according to research firm Gartner. Global PC shipments rose 14.8% to 48.9 million units from the same quarter last year, eclipsing Gartner's expectations by two percentage points," Chris Kraeuter reports for TheStreet.com.

"Globally, Dell expanded its leading market share to 17.9%, up a percentage point from the first quarter and up 1.3 percentage points from the same quarter last year. Hewlett-Packard also expanded its No. 2 market share on above-average growth," Kraeuter reports. "In the U.S., Apple posted the highest growth rate among its peers as shipments grew 31%, helping it advance to No. 4 domestically from the No. 5 slot. Apple reported blowout financial results last week, but set cautious targets for the current period. Gateway held the No. 3 slot domestically on growth of 26.6%. Its market share rose to 5.7% from 5.3% in the first quarter."

"Gartner and IDC report slightly different figures due to the different ways in which the companies record "white-box" shipments, or PCs sold by local distributors or resellers without a well-recognized brand name. These white-box vendors account for a larger share of the market in Gartner's results," Tom Krazit reports for IDG News Service "According to IDC, PC vendors shipped a total of 46.6 million units [worldwide] in the second quarter, up from 39.9 million units last year. Gartner's figures showed a total of 48.9 million PCs shipped during the quarter, up from 42.6 million units last year."

I believe for US sales, that would be IBM, now Lenovo.

Jul 18, 05 - 09:30 pm Comment from: FactChecker

IBM (bought by Lenovo) dropped due to "customer uncertainty resulting in slightly depressed shipments" and was beaten by Apple in the U.S. for fourth place.

yeah, Apple is doomed

MW 'evidence' as in, people have talked about the iPod halo effect and here is the evidence it is real.

Even though Apple may have surpassed IBM in consumer computer sales, IBM's market cap is still 4x that of Apple. IBM does a LOT more than just sell computers.

Re: HEY! More good news

Exactly. I expect the Mac mini to really take off big once it switches over to x86 since it supposedly will be able to run WinXP as well. For example, all the people currently building HTPC/SFF systems (Shuttle XPC, etc) could then buy a complete Apple Mac mini cheaper than a DIY SFF and the Mac mini is somewhere around 1/10th the volume of most other SFF systems. There are only a few small changes it needs to be perfect: a 3.5" hd (for speed), spdif in/out, and a better video card.

BTW - I don't use Windows.
