Gartner: Apple’s iPhone was fastest-growing smartphone in 2008 with sales growth of 248%
Thursday, March 12, 2009 - 02:09 PM EDT

"Apple’s iPhone was the fastest-growing smartphone of 2008... Gartner researchers reported Wednesday.Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

"Nokia still dominates the worldwide smartphone market with a 43.7% share, but overall it was not a good year for the world’s No. 1 manufacturer of mobile phones. Its smartphone sales were flat compared with 2007 and actually fell 16.8% year to year in the third quarter," Elmer-DeWitt reports.

"Research in Motion, HTC and Samsung all grew their smartphone market share last year, but none as fast as Apple, whose sales increased 245%," Elmer-DeWitt reports.

MacDailyNews Take: All this while iPhone 3.0 looms large as the outclassed also-rans once again don their adult diapers in anticipation of March 17th when they'll find out what they'll be trying and failing to copy for the next two years.

I seem to recall Balmer saying that the iPhone wasn't a serious competitor....

Mar 12, 09 - 02:24 pm Comment from: Nashgul

@Wings2Sky

Yeah, he doesn't plan to compete with a product of such high quality.

@Wings2Sky,
You are so right. And so is Ballmer. Afterall, he does run MS and so therefore must be smart.

And WinMobile 7 will rule....
And Apple iPhone will be outsold by the Pre...
And Windows 7 will be so different from Vista (er what is that?) ...

Believe him.... watch the watch.... repeat after me... Ballmer is the man.....

er. OK now back to reality. work work work. :-(

Apple will be on iPhone OS 9.0 before the competitors reach the original 1.0

Let's wait and see what happens on March 17. They have only announced a look at the next SOFTWARE version and software developers kit. This may not be anything worth getting excited about (multi-app support and cut and paste won't be much of a big deal for most users).

I will be really great to watch the iPhone positively lap WinMobile this coming year. MS is all giddy because they managed to outsell the iPhone in 2008 but that was before half the world came online with official iPhone sales and before the the App store was fully locked and loaded.

It still blows my mind that Windows has neither an App store running or even WinMo 6.5 up and running.

mr reeee, apple sold 13.675.000 iphones in 2008.
