I wish something would break on this. Switching to AT&T;at the beginning of May and if I knew they were going to be here by June, I'd hold out for the 3G. Otherwise I'll just have to go for the current EDGE network technology and wait two years to get a new one! Will AT&T;ever update their EDGE network to make it faster?

I don't know why anyone would have taken rumors to be fact anyhow. After that post yesterday about the doubling of EDGE speeds, perhaps 3G is coming in the backdoor. No new hardware needed. Personally, EDGE is my ONLY complaint about the iPhone. Well, actually, I wish it had cut/paste functions too, but it's not a big deal to me, though June and iPhone OS 2.0 can't come soon enough! I don't store music on my iPhone (I am quite happy with Pandora) so I have nearly 8GBs of free space, just itching for new apps to fill it up!

Useless rumor-type news anyway. I could make up better stuff than most of these so-called analysts. The "news" firms should employ palm readers and astrologers - the results would likely be more specific and more accurate.

They forget that the iPhone had to be announced early due to regulatory issues, there's not much chance Apple will order 10m of a device which hasn't been finalised yet.

Why in hell hasn't Apple opened up more markets for its existing product? There is a big world out there and it seems that new sales are being slowed by poor distribution.

Good news! Gartner analysts know the difference, read the InformationWeek article.

You will be the judge whether MDN should know the difference.

The reason for this unfortunate error was MDN using iPhone to write the entry. Hopefully copy/paste is arriving soon, retyping long passages of text with virtual keyboard is very tedious and somewhat error-prone. And I hate to see you suffer from reading such typos on this high-quality site. They distract your attention away from the content and release hidden anger to such a level that you post an entry about an "e" changed to an "a".

OK, a question for anyone who knows wireless...

When Apple does eventually issue a 3G iPhone, will it also work on the existing Edge network? Or will it be limited to areas serviced only by the 3G network?

Todays 3G GSM phones all work with EDGE. Which is why it's such a BS excuse from Apple that 3G coverage wasn't good (which is also not true, about half of the US population have 3G coverage). If the original iPhone was 3G you would 1) have been able to lock it into EDGE mode if you really like slow browsing 2) Seamlessly roam between 3G and EDGE. 3) Not need to buy a new iPhone this year.
