Gartner: Global wireless handset sales up 17% in 2nd quarter

"Global sales of wireless phones increased more than 17% in the second quarter, fueled primarily by demand in developing markets, according to a widely followed industry report," Jeffry Bartash reports for MarketWatch.

"The market-research firm Gartner said Thursday that customers around the world snapped up 270.9 million handsets in the second quarter. Nokia Corp. once again led the way, while rival Motorola Inc. held onto second place by aggressively cutting the prices of its phones, the firm said," Bartash reports.

Bartash reports, "New market entrant Apple Inc., which released its highly anticipated iPhone at the end of June, had a negligible impact. 'Apple stole the limelight in the quarter with the introduction of its iPhone in North America in the last two days of the quarter,' Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said. 'But we will only be able to better assess the impact the phone has had in the North America market in the quarters to come.'"

It won't be long before handsets become surgical implants. And soon enough, breast implants will have left and right stereo speakers built in.

Uh, no. The iPhone had, has, and will continue to have a HUGE impact. Its sales for the last quarter may have been negligible on the world scale, but its sales for the last day and a quarter of June were very satisfactory, thank you very much.

Ps @ Everyone, I nearly shuffled off the mortal coil after a bout of extended Farting caused by chasing Camel Cheese & Onion sandwiches with fermented camel's Milk!!!! Bewarned....Methane gas is not good for you! even your own gut made product.

Proof of Impact? HTC has been making fullscreen touch phones for years. Apple launches the iPhone then suddenly you find out they exist?
