Gartner, IDC fail to agree on preliminary Mac unit shipment numbers
Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 12:00 PM EST

Apple Store"Domestic Mac shipments for the second quarter of 2009 rose to 1.422 million, a 2.5 percent year-over-year increase," John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD. "Or, they fell to 1.2 million, a decline of 12.4 percent."

"All depends on who you believe, Gartner or IDC. According to Gartner, Apple (AAPL) has an 8.7 percent share of the U.S. market. According to IDC, that share is 7.6 percent. In a quarter that saw overall PC shipments in the U.S. decline 1.2 percent or 3 percent, that’s either pretty damn good or troubling, again depending on who you believe," Paczkowski reports. "Good thing both firms describe these estimates as 'preliminary,' right?"

Paczkowski reports, "So what are we to make of this? A disparity of more than 200,000 units between the the Q2 domestic Mac shipment estimates of two top market research outfits? Is it a 2.5 percent year-over-year increase. Or a 12.4 percent year-over-year decrease?"

"I’ve no idea," Paczkowski reports. "And clearly Gartner and IDC don’t either."

Full article, with Gartner's and IDC's "preliminary" charts, here.

MacDailyNews Take: Apple plans to release Mac units sales numbers along with the financial results of its third fiscal quarter on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 after market close (expect the release right around 4:30pm EDT). We'll wait to hear it from the horse's mouth.

Better to get it from a horse's mouth than a horse's ass.

Road apples. (It's what you get from the south end of a north bound horse.)

Has anyone noticed that Microsoft is announcing a successful ad campaign against Apple prior to the Gartner/IDC results?

It's as if Microsoft expected good results in the data.

Earlier this month one of these two, Gartner or IDC, said there was trouble with the numbers and that someone was gaming the system.

I smell a Microsoft rat.

It is hard to imagine anyone buying these preliminary reports from either of the two companies. Usually, investors, brokers, analysts purchase analysis reports such as these two in order to provide investment advice, or make investment decision related to the companies reported on. And now, when the news came out that these two reports diverge by that much, making an investment decision based on these reports today, ahead of Apple's earnings report conference call next Tuesday, is pretty much impossible. In order to make money quickly (get-rich-quick), you'd need to know NOW what the rest of the world is going to find out on Tuesday evening. Normally, IDC and Gartner would provide reasonably reliable information that would allow you to make an investment decision (buy or short; buy calls or puts, if you're more adventurous). However, with this much difference, their reports are pretty much useless.

What does Gene Munster say? He actually does legwork (checks retail stores, then does some extrapolation). So far, he has been quite reasonably accurate with the numbers.

This just proves my Point that all Analyst are wrong more then they are right. You know that no one really knows when the Two Big research companies are so fair apart, It just shows that even the big research firms just pull numbers out of their arse.

Well considering that Apple routinely "beats the estimates" quarter after quarter after quarter, I don't know why anyone even bothers listening to analysts anymore.

This could get interesting. That's a huge disparity for reputable firms (or as reputable as analysts get). If someone was gaming the system, the party that got inaccurate information as a result might be able to make a case against the gamers. Or they could expose the guilty party as a warning to not mess with them.

Did a little quick dig on this link and at Gartner and IDC sites

Found this, chit you not ...

Gartner offers "Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies"

A 38 page report about "Technologies and trends at or approaching the Hype Cycle peak ... the Trough of Disillusionment ... the Slope of Enlightenment."

And it can be yours, today, for the low, low price of only $1,995.00

But you better act now, supplies are probably limited

Over at IDC

The Department of Redundancy Department is doing well with Loren Loverde as "Program Director for IDC's Tracker Program"

And by offering insightful observations from the "President of Clients and Displays" (wtf?) who says, "The market continues to rely on consumer purchases."

?

How the 'ell these guys stay in business ?

How are any of the Broker and Analyst types able to make it ?

Oh yea, forgot, their biggest customer is Joe the Investor
