Gary Krakow: ‘The 3G iPhone Stinks’
Wednesday, July 09, 2008 - 06:00 PM EDT

After careful consideration and several emails from readers who submitted this for inclusion on our otherwise fine site to which we uniformly replied, "No free publicity for drunk grandmas," we've reconsidered; if only to shine a bright light on an unkept, slovenly idiot who has no business commenting on how to choose personal eyewear, much less attempting to singlehandedly talk down revolutionary products using reviews that he obviously cannot even read well enough to comprehend (try wearing them right-side up, Gary).

Without further ado, we present Gary Krakow of The Street.com in "The 3G iPhone Stinks" for your entertainment:

Direct link here.

MacDailyNews Take: Don't listen to Krakow's pissing-into-the-wind prattle — he's obviously intent on destroying whatever wisp of credibility he thinks he had built up over at MicrosoftNBC before he checks out; one more eclair ought to just about do it, Gary — just read for yourselves the full reviews that he tries (and fails) to collectively twist into something they most certainly are not:

• The New York Times' David Pogue reviews iPhone 3G
The Wall Street Journal's Walter Mossber reivews iPhone 3G

And, Gary, it's "iPhone 3G," you bloated, asinine failure.

The Wow starts now?

Message to Gary Krakow: you suck dude!

Jul 09, 08 - 06:03 pm Comment from: Denny

This guy as George Carlin would say is "Full of Sh-t"

Jul 09, 08 - 06:03 pm Comment from: macnut222

"Gary Krakow: ‘The 3G iPhone Stinks.’" Translated, this really means: "I'm mad that I didn't get an iPhone 3G early like Mossberg."

Jul 09, 08 - 06:04 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

What a desperate, grasping hack this man is. This is the lowest TheStreet has ever sunk.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:05 pm Comment from: cmw

Jul 09, 08 - 06:06 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Don't forget folks, there are some MAJOR PROBLEMS with the iPhone 3G. Like... Well, Walt had some dropped calls! And... er, there is still no cut and paste! And, um... 3G isn't evereywhere!

MAJOR!!!

Jul 09, 08 - 06:07 pm Comment from: jeff

The only reason he thinks it stinks is because you can't watch his crappy flash video's on it.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:09 pm Comment from: PowerPhone

If the iPhone stinks then it is because he left it in his back pocket next to his ass for too long.

Or he just needs to brush his teeth before talking on it....

Jul 09, 08 - 06:09 pm Comment from: CYxodus

He's a prime example of the biased news and why America is tuning them out. He comes off as someone who has an agenda and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he was bought off by one of Apple's rivals.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:09 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

If you really listen to what he said... what he ACTUALLY said, it's almost complete praise for the new iPhone. He even said that if you don't already have an iPhone, it's "One for the Books."

But to those of us that do, it's got MAJOR PROBLEMS!!!

And boy, is that girl dumb with a capital Duh.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:12 pm Comment from: Jubei

So what credibility will this cretin have left when the iPhone 3G is a huge success.

Just like the 6 million sold in less than a year. Apple could have sold more if they didn't run out. The 3G iPhone will be a huge success. Will Krakow apologize and say he was inebriated when he was being filmed?

Jul 09, 08 - 06:15 pm Comment from: MDN Owes Me New Underpants

"No free publicity for drunk grandmas."

Oh, I laughed so hard I think I shat myself!

Jul 09, 08 - 06:18 pm Comment from: MacFhearghaile

Gary Peter breath Krakow is living proof that self abuse shrivels your brain, he could use a shave and a hair cut while he's at it. On second thought cut your head off fat ass and you won't have to worry about the shave and hair hair cut, you will only loose a couple of pounds because an empty head only weighs that much.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:18 pm Comment from: clinicaltechmaster

This bloated unshaven windbag is unimportant.
The iPhone is a new generation of computer devices. Period.
It will dominate its market overnight.
Nothing will be able to compete against it.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:21 pm Comment from: His Divine Shadow

Sure, these guys shouldn't be given the time of day. Think "Streisand Effect". But I would counter that this kind of intense stupidity must be held up before the world and ridiculed mercilessly.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:22 pm Comment from: jarrettdailynews

I saw this earlier over at the street, it amazed me that he couldn't distinguish between At&t;'s network issues, 3G flaws and Apple's inability to control either. This guy sucks as far as technology reviews go. So we do have to forgive his lack of knowledge, but, that being the case, don't report about it either.

All in all, Apple will sell 60 million total units by the end of 2009, at roughly $400 profit per phone that will be $24 billion. WOW!!! Now factor in 30% Mac growth a quarter, iTunes sales growth, Apple TV+iTunes, the App Store...... damn, I smell a $20 billion dollar Christmas quarter 2009.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:22 pm Comment from: overlook00

This must be some ploy to get people to visit their site, since every other review is extremely positive. I guess they felt they had to over emphasize the negatives to stand out. Regardless it does nothing more than make them look bad to anyone paying attention.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:22 pm Comment from: REALTORben

Gary is a schmuck! He is either really bad at his job, or he is really good at it--meaning he wants people to write about HIM because they are pissed...such as we are doing. However, I think is just sucks at his job.

He is just like a conspiracy theorist. Remember the old rule about conspiracy theories (which Gary follows), not only do you want to find every waking piece of evidence to support your theory, make sure you also ignore everything that goes against it.

Bottom line is Gary "Schmuck" Crack-head, that if you ask the MILLIONS of people that own iPhones, if they had to choose between punching you in the face, and keeping their iPhones, or trading their iPhone in for a new supermodel wife/husband, they would choose the first.

Obviously he has no problem pimping out MS smart phones about "business and enteprise" and ignoring the fact that you can get games for those two, but then points to the fact that you can put games on the iPhone and "that's not good for business".

Stupid Stupid Gary, this phone isn't aimed at "just" Business Customers or "just" entertainment consumers. Apple doesn't offer 10 versions of their phones (just like they don't do on their OS). There are 20 different Windows Mobile phones that do various things that the others don't, and you have to mix and match to find the right phone, and unless you drop $400, you won't get all the features. Apple just makes one phone that has everything!

What a schmuck

Jul 09, 08 - 06:24 pm Comment from: AAPLguy

what an asshat.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:26 pm Comment from: KingMel

Cut-n-paste will likely be in a future software update. That should not take new iPhone hardware. Wait for it.

Battery life - it's funny to hear the same people who panned the original iPhone for not having 3G for using Steve Jobs' battery life argument against the 3G iPhone. These people do not have a clue, or they are purposely being misleading. My understanding is that the battery life using Edge has *improved* over the original. It's the 3G that pushes it lower - but you get 2X or 3X the throughput, so maybe it actually comes out better? At least it is faster. Sometimes you get what you want, but then don't want it. Grow up.

This guy is a waste of natural resources (and my time). Conservation demands that he hold his breath indefinitely.

Someone should check to see if he is attempting to buy AAPL stock or options. I could do his job 100X better (and still suck at it).

Jul 09, 08 - 06:28 pm Comment from: His Divine Shadow

Okay, I watched it again. These people are fscking retards. A previous poster is correct: none of the imagined "major problems" are actually problems. And the cost of plans? What the FSCK does that have to do with Apple? THOSE ARE THE CARRIERS' RATES YOU FSCKING DIPSHITS!

This is the worst piece of hack journalism I've seen this week. Expect more as the iPhone crushes sales records and the competition in the smartphone space. I look forward to another one od Enderle's idiotic "damned with faint praise" pieces.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: I liked the band Rush better

HELLO!

THE IPHONE DOESN'T STINK!

RUSH LIMBAUGH IS GETTING ONE!!
(sarcasm)

RUSH: All right! All right! After the stupid story in TIME Magazine, I told the staff, "I'm going to go out and I'm going to get gift certificates for 25 iPhones," these new iPhones that come out Friday, because you have to go into the store and sign up. You can't buy 'em online anymore. You can buy two to a customer, but you have to be there. It's a whole new process.

CALLER: So, you know... (interruption)

RUSH: No, that's not why I'm taking Friday off. No, I've got snarky comments from the staff now, from the broadcast engineer, asking is that why I'm taking off. No! I've got major dental surgery on Friday, if you must know. I am not going to go stand in line to get an iPhone. I have a special dispensation from that. Somebody else is going to go get mine. It's been taken care of. I'll have it when I got home from the dentist, but I probably won't feel like using it. Anyway, sorry about that, Charles.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:31 pm Comment from: JohnLee

He's wrong on his criticism of battery life. You can get external battery packs that plug into the iPhone.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:33 pm Comment from: R2

If I was Apple, I wouldn't have allowed any reviews before the App Store opened. I mean let's face it, the iPhone 3G is a lukewarm stepping stone toward something larger and more powerful probably by winter. What is there to report on, faster data speeds, slightly improved sound and a plastic cover?

It's all about the apps. If these guys had some to download first, they probably would've spent a good deal of time raving about the App Store instead of stretching what little they had to work with.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:34 pm Comment from: John E

and speaking of web whores, you should (not) see Thurrott whining away over at his 'supersite' about the beta 2.0 iPhone software he got his hands on, and his snarking on the other reviewers who got an advance phone.

yessireree, these guys are showing us a lotta class.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:35 pm Comment from: Jimm Jimmy

2007: The really huge problems with the first iPhone. It doesn't have 2G.

2008: The really huge problems with the 2nd gen iPhone is they gave us 3G.

When will Apple get it right?!

Jul 09, 08 - 06:39 pm Comment from: Jeremy

What a confused, confused man. He can hardly string sentences together yet he is a tech reviewer for a major concern.

Jul 09, 08 - 06:43 pm Comment from: Ferf Muckmeyer

Who is this asshole and what has he been reading? Does he know how to read? The reviews have been pretty damn positive, Gary, you unshaven twit! This guy sounds like a cretin that can't even dress himself.

Me too!

Rush is the greates band EVER!!!!

(yes, yes, I'm a Rush fan. I like my computers to be Apple, I like my music to be Rush.... don't blame me for liking the best of the best, hehe!!)

Jul 09, 08 - 06:51 pm Comment from: ralph from berlin

when the original iphone came out one year ago, battery life on a 3g phone was between 2-3 hours. steve jobs by that time said (and i think that it was the right decision to leave that feature out of the first iphone) that this is much too little and probably in a year or so it will be around 5 hours and that's when it's ready for prime time. now, one year later it is 5 hour battery life with 3G and people are still complaining about it. (no one was complaining about the 3 hour battery life of the nokia n95 back then). i think apple didn't have a chance to go without 3G this time but 3G phones are still not ready for heavy daily use. the available batteries are simply not good enough. (otherwise i think that it wouldn't be such a big problem designwise to make that fscking battery replacable if that's what people want so badly).

Jul 09, 08 - 06:53 pm Comment from: Brau

Of course the iPhone stinks ... after you shove it up your ass and regurgitate it through your mouth, that is. Either that or he placed in the same bag as his terd-brown Zune; anything would stink after that. Oh, and it could be the fact it uses OS icks! wink

What a laugh.

Is this guy eating his lunch while he's doing this interview. Or is he so overly fat that he's swallowing his tongue as he speaks. I'm glad I never watch the prison channel (MSNBC) so I'm not subjected to this blubbering NYC male reporter.

Hey Krackow go jog around CP every other day. It might help.

Jul 09, 08 - 07:05 pm Comment from: montex

Having to restate, yet again, that the battery is not removable hints to me that this guy may be on the payola to dig on the iPhone.

But so what? The iPhone is a success and will trample the competition world wide. I think Gary has an over inflated sense of self if he thinks he's going to single handedly blow out the iPhone market.

Jul 09, 08 - 07:06 pm Comment from: UK iPhone

Why are they saying the phone is a success or failure just based on the USA? It has a worldwide release. I live in the UK, who cares if your getting drop outs in Washington? Surely your only gonna care if you live there. Now when you look at the scale of the launch, why would you base a reason to dislike the iPhone on the way it works in one or two cities? You need better reasons than that. I think the iPhone would be a success regardless of these reviews were seeing. Even if some respected reviewer said it was total crap and not to buy it, we still would.... Aaaaanyways just a lil reminder that there are distant lands that exist outside america. Luvs ya all!

Jul 09, 08 - 07:24 pm Comment from: newton*

what an absolute blundering review...a high school newspaper editor would do a better job at reviewing consumer technology...his points are so bad, I must assume he is under instructions to present a negative bias.....goodness gracious, have these so-called tech editors ever used an iPhone??

Jul 09, 08 - 07:25 pm Comment from: Macintosh

Funny how I never really heard much talk about how the majority of phones are subsidized until the iPhone hit the market and the haters came out to play.

Jul 09, 08 - 07:28 pm Comment from: Hal

Get off the cut and paste thing. How are you going to select what to cut and paste. There needs to be a second way to select and then to command. I see the patent application re fingernail or stylus so maybe they need that before it is possible to cut and paste. And I think the 3G stinks too, and that is why I am waiting until saturday to get mine.

Jul 09, 08 - 07:32 pm Comment from: ken1w

That was one of the worst attempts at negative spin off of positive news, ever. I'm not sure who's playing this moron off, but they should ask for a refund.

Jul 09, 08 - 07:36 pm Comment from: skips

In fact he is correct about it costing more. However, Apple reports that this result is what people wanted. Jobs stated that 56 percent of the people who were interviewed about why they did not buy an iPhone replied that it cost too much up front. The fact that the cost of ownership was less made no impression on them.

The other unfortunate fact that led to the current state of affairs is likely to be the prevalence of "unlocking." The Verizon CEO basically admitted this result when he gloated about Apple having to fall in line with the accepted business practices in the cell phone industry. It would appear that Apple has had to settle for defining the wholesale price to the carrier and the retail price, and no longer has any say in the cell phone subscription cost or services. No where was this situation more obvious than with Rogers in Canada.

I guess that we will have to just wait and see if the situation changes as we move into the next round of negotiations between the cell phone manufacturers and the cell phone carriers.

Jul 09, 08 - 07:53 pm Comment from: Randian

Gary . . . my advice to you is . . . DON'T BUY ONE! It's not good enough for you, clearly. However, just remember this, you old sod: The greatest enemy of "THE GOOD" is THE PERFECT. Why don't you just keep waiting for RIM's new competitor. It should be out in a year or two, and IT will probably be perfect! WAnd with any luck, Microsoft should have its "Phune" out by then, and we all KNOW THAT will be flawless!

Jul 09, 08 - 07:59 pm Comment from: bizlaw

The iPhone 3G was never intended to be a revolutionary leap over the iPhone 2G. For cryin' out loud, the iPhone has only been out for less than a year! Apple spent several years developing the iPhone – why would it dump an obviously popular design in less than a year?

Yes, there are missing features which should be there – cut & paste and universal search being two biggies. However, Apple knows that developers will fill the void for other items: MMS, voice dialing, etc. It's more important that Apple spend time on preparing the 2.0 SDK and making sure OS X was really, really ready for developers rather than creating a couple of nice feature additions like voice dialing or video recording.

These things will come in the next version of the software. What I find funny is that goofballs like Krakow have to search hard to find problems with the iPhone, when the iPhone is so many miles ahead of the competition that they can't possibly catch up. Notice RIM's product to fight the iPhone – oh, wait, they have delayed it's release again because of problems.

I watched it without the sound. It's like Chris Farley has returned from the future after getting his hair done by Magnum P.I. and taking up residence in a sweet cardboard shanty.
