I saw this earlier over at the street, it amazed me that he couldn’t distinguish between At&t;’s network issues, 3G flaws and Apple’s inability to control either. This guy sucks as far as technology reviews go. So we do have to forgive his lack of knowledge, but, that being the case, don’t report about it either.
All in all, Apple will sell 60 million total units by the end of 2009, at roughly $400 profit per phone that will be $24 billion. WOW!!! Now factor in 30% Mac growth a quarter, iTunes sales growth, Apple TV+iTunes, the App Store…… damn, I smell a $20 billion dollar Christmas quarter 2009.
This must be some ploy to get people to visit their site, since every other review is extremely positive. I guess they felt they had to over emphasize the negatives to stand out. Regardless it does nothing more than make them look bad to anyone paying attention.

Stupid Stupid Gary, this phone isn’t aimed at “just” Business Customers or “just” entertainment consumers. Apple doesn’t offer 10 versions of their phones (just like they don’t do on their OS). There are 20 different Windows Mobile phones that do various things that the others don’t, and you have to mix and match to find the right phone, and unless you drop $400, you won’t get all the features. Apple just makes one phone that has everything!

Battery life – it’s funny to hear the same people who panned the original iPhone for not having 3G for using Steve Jobs’ battery life argument against the 3G iPhone. These people do not have a clue, or they are purposely being misleading. My understanding is that the battery life using Edge has *improved* over the original. It’s the 3G that pushes it lower – but you get 2X or 3X the throughput, so maybe it actually comes out better? At least it is faster. Sometimes you get what you want, but then don’t want it. Grow up.
This guy is a waste of natural resources (and my time). Conservation demands that he hold his breath indefinitely.

If I was Apple, I wouldn’t have allowed any reviews before the App Store opened. I mean let’s face it, the iPhone 3G is a lukewarm stepping stone toward something larger and more powerful probably by winter. What is there to report on, faster data speeds, slightly improved sound and a plastic cover?
It’s all about the apps. If these guys had some to download first, they probably would’ve spent a good deal of time raving about the App Store instead of stretching what little they had to work with.

when the original iphone came out one year ago, battery life on a 3g phone was between 2-3 hours. steve jobs by that time said (and i think that it was the right decision to leave that feature out of the first iphone) that this is much too little and probably in a year or so it will be around 5 hours and that’s when it’s ready for prime time. now, one year later it is 5 hour battery life with 3G and people are still complaining about it. (no one was complaining about the 3 hour battery life of the nokia n95 back then). i think apple didn’t have a chance to go without 3G this time but 3G phones are still not ready for heavy daily use. the available batteries are simply not good enough. (otherwise i think that it wouldn’t be such a big problem designwise to make that fscking battery replacable if that’s what people want so badly).
Of course the iPhone stinks … after you shove it up your ass and regurgitate it through your mouth, that is. Either that or he placed in the same bag as his terd-brown Zune; anything would stink after that. Oh, and it could be the fact it uses OS icks!

Why are they saying the phone is a success or failure just based on the USA? It has a worldwide release. I live in the UK, who cares if your getting drop outs in Washington? Funny how I never really heard much talk about how the majority of phones are subsidized until the iPhone hit the market and the haters came out to play.
Get off the cut and paste thing. How are you going to select what to cut and paste. There needs to be a second way to select and then to command. I see the patent application re fingernail or stylus so maybe they need that before it is possible to cut and paste. And I think the 3G stinks too, and that is why I am waiting until saturday to get mine.
That was one of the worst attempts at negative spin off of positive news, ever. I’m not sure who’s playing this moron off, but they should ask for a refund.
In fact he is correct about it costing more. However, Apple reports that this result is what people wanted. Jobs stated that 56 percent of the people who were interviewed about why they did not buy an iPhone replied that it cost too much up front. The fact that the cost of ownership was less made no impression on them.
The other unfortunate fact that led to the current state of affairs is likely to be the prevalence of “unlocking.” The Verizon CEO basically admitted this result when he gloated about Apple having to fall in line with the accepted business practices in the cell phone industry. It would appear that Apple has had to settle for defining the wholesale price to the carrier and the retail price, and no longer has any say in the cell phone subscription cost or services. No where was this situation more obvious than with Rogers in Canada.
I guess that we will have to just wait and see if the situation changes as we move into the next round of negotiations between the cell phone manufacturers and the cell phone carriers.
Gary . . . my advice to you is . . . DON’T BUY ONE! It’s not good enough for you, clearly. However, just remember this, you old sod: The greatest enemy of “THE GOOD” is THE PERFECT. Why don’t you just keep waiting for RIM’s new competitor. It should be out in a year or two, and IT will probably be perfect! WAnd with any luck, Microsoft should have its “Phune” out by then, and we all KNOW THAT will be flawless!
The iPhone 3G was never intended to be a revolutionary leap over the iPhone 2G. For cryin’ out loud, the iPhone has only been out for less than a year! Apple spent several years developing the iPhone – why would it dump an obviously popular design in less than a year?
Yes, there are missing features which should be there – cut & paste and universal search being two biggies. However, Apple knows that developers will fill the void for other items: MMS, voice dialing, etc. It’s more important that Apple spend time on preparing the 2.0 SDK and making sure OS X was really, really ready for developers rather than creating a couple of nice feature additions like voice dialing or video recording.
These things will come in the next version of the software. What I find funny is that goofballs like Krakow have to search hard to find problems with the iPhone, when the iPhone is so many miles ahead of the competition that they can’t possibly catch up. Notice RIM’s product to fight the iPhone – oh, wait, they have delayed it’s release again because of problems.
I watched it without the sound. It’s like Chris Farley has returned from the future after getting his hair done by Magnum P.I. and taking up residence in a sweet cardboard shanty.

It’s part of the stock price manipulation game that they participate in. It’s definitely frustrating to constantly hear skewed reporting from them, but traders make money when the stock goes up or down depending on the current news cycle.

Face it, folks. The iPhone 3G is being sold because of the 3G – it’s in the name, for goodness sake (!) – but the truth is is that even in New York and DC coverage is spotty — I’d say this is a legitimate gripe.
Jobs told us with the original 2G model that the battery life sucked with 3G. Then he said they improved the battery life (whoopee!). But guess what? Battery life sucks with 3G, barely lasting the day according to Walt. Legitimate.
Jobs sold the idea that the G3 version is so much cheaper, but that is like a used car salesman trying to get you to focus on the low monthly payments to bamboozle you on the total cost of the product (how long you’ll be paying those “low” monthly payments). The present “low-price” of the iPhone is being subsidized by the raised future price of service. That’s the arrangement they made with an exclusive partner; let’s not pretend that they are totally innocent of how their exclusive partner, AT&T;, structures its fees. It’s not like the customer can easily go elsewhere. Another legitimate criticism.
And didn’t the Jobs promo show the GPS avatar going around street-by-street? And now we learn that it can’t really do that?
I would have to agree that the new features of iPhone 3G are a far cry from expectations. GPS and 3G simply aren’t important enough to make this a huge success as a sequel. Yeah, I’m getting one, but I must say, I expected more from Apple. That said, the iPhone is the best device I’ve ever had, and everyone who sees it salivates profusely. Gen 1 iPhone is remarkable. Gen 2 is, well, iPhone 1 with a couple more bells as whistles. It’s not a revolutionary upgrade at all. My two cents. I like the video pointing this out. Negative press is a great catalyst for innovation!

The points the Gary is making are not his own. So I don’t know why people are calling HIM an idiot. Not all the points made were negative either.
Some of the points I do question though.
-GPS antennae too small for turn by turn. I have no idea if this is true, but I doubt it. I thought this was just a software choice made by Apple.
-Just because the iPhone is great at games doesn’t mean much. Computers are good at games too.
-Battery life stinks. Has anyone had an iPhone 3G long enough to condition the battery.
-Can not swap battery. Legitimate, but we all know there are external battery options. Finding a power source isn’t typically difficult either.

It seems to me like the allmighty US is way behind Europe when it comes to implementing 3G. Im not allknowing on this tech but I know it has lots of coverage in my little nordic country. Mostly in the bigger cities but its growing in other parts too.

The iPhone sucks!! Phone Calls, we have been able to make phone calls for decades. Video, I have been able to watch video on my tv for decades. Music, my grandma could listen to music. It runs on a battery, come on, batteries have been around for decades. When is Apple going to invent something NEW. Obviously they will be out of business before long.

Then, it turns out, this phone is more expensive than the first one – but, as it turns out, many/most of “Us People in Business” don’t have to pay the cost of the plan, our employers pay for the phone and data plan. Sometimes Us People have to pay for the phone. In either case, the 3G is cheaper and better.
The 3G network sucks and Krakow sucks. But the 3G network is getting better. Krakow is just mired in the sludge.

I don’t have a huge problem with the reviews… the guy really doesnt say anything as bad as it’s made out to be. It does do some things – it doesnt do others and why i.e. GPS and antenna. It’s by no means a harmful review. If the battery life is bad – then it’s bad. He said the MS exchange worked flawlessly.

3G is ready for primetime, it just depends on whose 3G. AT&T;has the worst 3G network…. This has been Apple’s biggest problem ni the USA is that they couldn’t do a deal w/ Verizon Wireless.
Unlike AT&T;, Verizon has a ubiquitous 3G network across the country w/ better data speeds (both uplink & downlink).
Verizon’s 3G phones have talk time longer than the iPhones…
Additionally, the better engineered & more dense the base stations on the 3G network, the better the battery life will be. This is due to the dynamic power control in CDMA.
Remember, Verizon was smart as they have learned how t better engineer their network through YEARS of experience w/ CDMA…
AT&T;went w/ ancient GSM (dead slow & hollow sounding voice quality) and now has ZERO experience engineering a CDMA network (ALL 3G networks are CDMA folks! Duh!)
AT&T;’s problems don’t surprise me… they can’t even keep a call up on 2G!!!!! Both the JD Powers as well as Consumer Reports network quality studies show it… their network SUCKS!
I just wish Verizon & Apple could stop sniping at each other & do a deal…..
