Google brings mobile advertising to Apple iPhone
Tuesday, December 09, 2008 - 01:51 PM EDT

Google has "announced that advertisers who use its AdWords program to place ads on Web sites also can opt to have those ads appear on Apple’s iPhone, T-Mobile’s G1, and other mobile devices that use full Web browsers.," Rob Hof reports for BusinessWeek.

"The key is that advertisers won’t have to reformat those ads, making the whole process much more appealing," Hof reports.

Appealing to whom? Apparently consumers cannot pay enough to avoid commercials (I remember when HBO was 'commercial-free'). If my ability to block web ads or DVR-skip commercials on TV is ever compromised, then I might end up going nuts from the bombardment of inane commercials.

Honestly, people would be better off getting outside more often and curling up with a good book after dinner.

Everyone bitches about commercials and ads but without them how would you know when something new comes out that you were interested in?

It's double edge sword people....

You'd think. But people keep downloading those free ad-supported apps on the App Store. So obviously there are some people who don't value their time very much.

And no matter how much time is dedicated to advertisements, people seem to keep watching TV. Go figure.

That's why Apple TV is so cool. No ads at all.

Interesting comment. I have only watched delayed TV for the past year (via EyeTV) and so have missed all the ads. Yet ads are a part of our 'culture', but I only realised this when some friends were talking about a recent ad and I was totally out of the conversation. It is also harder to think what is 'cool' to buy the kids for Christmas.

Maybe I'll start watching some ads again and rejoin the masses.

@HolyMackerel,
I can see what you mean. The commercials during sporting events are WAY different than those shown during Oprah, for example - much funnier and more creative than those daytime commercials. If you don't watch any live TV, you'll miss out on those "cultural phenomenons".

@holy mackerel

or you could just google up "latest tech" or "new cool stuff" and you can find out without it intruding on your life.

i prefer ad free too. mostly because i don't want it eating my capped bandwidth.

Bitching about Google's text ads seems misguided considering all the annoying ads we put up with on this very website. Seriously, I think at the rate MDN is plastering their site with ads, in a couple of years it won't matter if we're reading the article on an iPhone or a 24" monitor, we'll get about the same amount of display area, the rest will be overrun by annoying flash ads!

Dec 09, 08 - 05:04 pm Comment from: funny though...

They advertise the iPHone first than their own product. just a thought.

If internet access was free, as in beer, I could put up with ads.

Until then forget it.

Revenge against AdWords:

Google "mesothelioma". Notice all the lawyer AdWords ads. They pay up to $75 for those ads. Click on them all. Good - now you've cost some slimy lawyers several hundred dollars.

It as left as an exercise to the reader t o come up with other search phrases can bring up other lawyer ads.

It's a sad day for mobile browsing. Advertising is like a swarm of blood-thirsty mosquitos that follows you wherever you go. Even some gas stations now blast customers with advertising right at the pump. Pretty disgusting!
