Google CEO Schmidt: Nexus One was ‘so successful, we killed it’

In an article subtitled, “What a load of Schmidt,” Cade Metz reports for The Register, “Google CEO Eric Schmidt has convinced himself that the company killed its sold-direct-to-netizen Nexus One phone after less than six months because it was ‘so successful.'”

“‘The idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did,’ Schmidt told The Telegraph, demonstrating just how far removed from reality his mind has become,” Metz reports. [Schmidt continued,] ‘It was so successful, we didn’t have to do a second one. We would view that as positive but people criticised us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: ‘Ok, it worked. Congratulations – we’re stopping.’ We like that flexibility, we think that flexibility is characteristic of nimbleness at our scale.'”

MacDailyNews Take: “We like our strategy. We like it a lot.” – Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer after Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone. Obviously, CEOs who face Apple crack mentally after a while. Those who weren’t already cracked when they started, that is.

Metz continues, “At launch, Google said that the Nexus One belonged to a new super class of handset — even though it couldn’t match the Motorola Droid (according to none other than Google open source guru Chris DiBona) — let alone the iPhone.”

  1. Ballmer: Due to the unprecedented success of the Kin, we have shut it down. The shear magnitude of sales distracted us from our true mission: shitty operating system sales!.

  2. @TowerTone

well that name is appropiate since you can see the PINK polo shirt and
PINK cowboy hat Schmidt is wearing in the photo at the beginning of the article ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”hmmm” style=”border:0;” />

  3. WOW!! That’s delusional at a whole new level in the corporate world.
We killed it because it was to successful? More like they killed it because to many people had technical problems with it and they weren’t prepared to support it with any technical staff is what I read.
Google pointed at HTC to support it and HTC pointed right back at Google and told them to support there own damn phone. Google then killed it because it was to successful at failing, and maybe a patent infringement or two along the way as well.

  4. How many times does it have to be stated, that Android was never meant to be an iPhone killer? . . . It was meant to be an MSP7, Symbian, Rim killer, . . . the phone for all the rest.

Just how long do you think you’d have to wait in line if everybody had to buy iPhones?

  5. I wish Apple would come out with their own search engine. I can’t use Bing. I just can’t. Not after Microsoft’s treachery against Apple. But every time I use Google, I feel like I’m shipping weapons grade plutonium to Iran. Or I feel like a two dollar whore.. Sometimes both…

  6. What he’s saying is that they are in the software business and by creating a hardware device it made other hardware makers get busy. Result…Android has
taken off bigtime both in hardware devices and in app development…licensing fees straight out of Micro$oft’s playbook. Other than getting kicked off Apple’s board…it was a win/win for them and overall a smart decision to put their name on a hardware device. And now they are not competing with Apple in hardware, just software, and letting the others either survive or die from the iPhone death sword.
Smart decision and strategy, really. They knew all along they couldn’t compete with Apple in hardware. In reality, the Android platform has killed off Windows Mobile using M$ft’s own plan.
This is probable Jobs and Schmidts long term media buzz plan all along.
We have to admit it…if Jobs did this, we would all be sitting here calling him a genius…but maybe we still should, as I bet he had a hand in all this. Remember his and Schmidt’s coffee shop meeting???

  7. Eric Schmidt is a gay cowboy? (I can say such potentially offensive things since I’m gay. Those are the perks we get with our lifetime membership card.)

All kidding aside, his excuse is totally bogus.

  8. How do shareholders put up with these aholes?
How do they continue to run their companies using a sum total of squat for brains and imagination (although imagination seems to be more delusion than imagination)?
I’m so glad none of my money is tied up with pathetic airheads.
