Ashlee Vance and Nick Bilton report for The New York Times, “Google — a search and advertising company — is soon expected to begin selling its version of a slate computer, like Apple’s iPad.”
Google’s plan is to offer a device that would function as “an e-reader that would function like a computer,” Vance and Bilton report. “Eric E. Schmidt, chief executive of Google, told friends at a recent party in Los Angeles about the new device, which would exclusively run the Android operating system. People with direct knowledge of the project — who did not want to be named because they said they were unauthorized to speak publicly about the device — said the company had been experimenting in ‘stealth mode’ with a few publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet.”
MacDailyNews Take: Eric T. Mole loves “stealth mode.” After all, it’s the very mode in which he operated while on Apple’s Board of Directors and also, of course, while on some other “excursions.”

MacDailyNews Take: Apple leads. Google follows. As usual.
And, Microsoft says, “Hey, no fair, Google! Following Apple around like a brain-damaged, three-legged puppy dog and calling it ‘innovation’ is our ‘strategy.’ And, we like it. We like it a lot.”

Never been first before
Vaporous
To big to carry, not practical. It would be like carrying a cinema display around. If that’s all they have, it’s not an iPad killer at all.
How big is it? If those hands are representitive of the size – no thanks.
That thing is HUGE!!!!!!! Did anyone else pick up on that? That is about the size of my computer monitor compared to the size on the hands on the video. You would look like you were carrying around a poster-board under your arm!
If the “hands” in that video are the size of mine, that “tablet” would be more like a “countertop”. That thing would have to be about the size of my 27″ Mac’s screen.
“an e-reader that would function like a computer,” sounds like a pre-face saving exit strategy should the device fail. It’s not really a computer you know!
Looks boring…
Google, all brains, no beauty.
Forget the size for a moment. The big difference is the windowing/multitasking environment. IF, I say IF, Google pulls this off there will be a lot of interested parties. Think of it as a portable Big Ass Table.
This is really sad. What ever happened to innovation? I can understand flattery, but a flat out direct copy? Come on!!! What manner of egregiousness is that! Is Apple the only capable company? This is just sad.
with a video like that, it must be real.
Big-Ass Tablet.
The Surface is Back!!!!!!!!!
Finally you can…… surf the web? Check Gmail?
🙁
That keyboard and pop ups look familiar…
seriously. Can anyone, other than Apple, come up with an original idea or approach?
Ask Palm how “me too” is treating them.
Awesome, now you can download full screen malware apps…….
Is google bored with their areas of interest? Stick with search and advertisment. Looks like Google is the new Microsoft. Bust out the copy machines.
The iSlab.
Lame,
It will help Apple push its iPad to next level.
“they said they were unauthorized to speak publicly about the device”
I think you will fine they were not authorized to speak, unauthorized to speak is just not kosher.
@pogo…
That’s what I thought.
They copied a 27 inch iMac screen and gave it gesture capabilities?Kind of like breasts on a bull.! IPad killer? Drop it out a window and it will kill 10 pedestrians too!
Mountain View, Start your photocopiers.
Google:
“Hey, look everybody!
We took a 27″ iMac, removed the stand, and, uh … we’ll pretend we have touch technology that doesn’t infringe on Apple’s patents, and now look at our video of <strike>vapourware</strike>, um … soon-to-be-released hardware and software that we … uh, innovated !! Yeah, we innovated it!!”
