Google sees 50 times more searches from Apple iPhone than any other mobile
Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - 03:36 PM EST

"Google on Wednesday said it had seen 50 times more searches on Apple‘s iPhone than any other mobile handset, adding weight to the group’s confidence at being able to generate significant revenues from the mobile internet," Maija Palmer and Paul Taylor report for The Financial Times.

"'We thought it was a mistake and made our engineers check the logs again,' Vic Gundotra, head of Google’s mobile operations told the Financial Times at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona," Palmer and Taylor report. "If the trend continues and other handset manufacturers follow Apple’s lead in making web access easy, the number of mobile searches will overtake fixed internet searches 'within the next several years,' Mr Gundotra said."

"Google’s comments echo figures released recently by AT&T and O2, which carry the iPhone exclusively in the US and UK respectively," Palmer and Taylor report. "In the US, AT&T said average revenue per user for iPhone users was nearly double the average, because iPhone users took large data packages on top of their voice calls. In the UK, O2 hopes that the high usage levels will fuel the nascent mobile ad market and unlock a potentially large revenue stream."

it'll be interesting to see how Google tries to fsck iPhone and other mobile phone vendors when/if they ship Android, based on the revenue opportunities of the mobile web

@dan, yeah, it'll be exactly the same way Google fscks us iPhone users now. Those searches will cost us the same. Damn them! Damn them to hell!

Reflecting back on SJ's introduction of the iPhone the part that got the most lackluster response was the part about it being a " breakthrough internet communicator". In over six months of use I find that, this is the most compelling part of the device. I am constantly looking things up, settling bets about obscure facts etc. This where the so called pundits have missed the boat. The iPhone is a life altering device and I would never go back to anything that did not provide this level of internet access.

I never thought I would be typing a comment for MDN on my iPod touch.

Still, after owning this iPod for 3 months, it's still the best gadget I have ever ever owned.

Google has the right data. This will jump start development for the iPhone when SDK comes out.

IT Guy is just jealous. Probably had to use his DELL to post here since his phone probably crashed, has a lousy web interface, or his fixed keys are probably stuck from all the snot from his grubby fingers jamming the keys. grin

People with iPhones actually use it for Internet access, because it has a real browser called Safari. The other phones have limited browsers which are not as useful or enjoyable, so they do not get used as often by the owners. That means iPhone users are much more valuable to Internet content providers and advertisers as users of those other mobile devices.

But that "50 times" stat is pretty shocking. Given the much lower number of iPhones out there right now compared to other smart phones with Internet access, it means that users of those other phone almost NEVER use them to access the Internet. From the perspective of Internet content providers and advertisers, those other phones might as well not even exist. iPhone all the way...
