Google’s ‘Understudy’ plugin brings Hulu and Netflix to Apple Macs’ Front Row
Monday, February 16, 2009 - 08:52 AM EST

Google's "Understudy" plugin allows access to streaming video through the Front Row interface of Mac OS X. The user can subscribe to multiple feeds, and select a video to watch from them. "Understudy" currently supports Hulu and Netflix.

According to Google, "Understudy" is stable, but is also a work in progress. Please feel free to report any problems on the issue tracker.

"Understudy" is not affiliated with any of the streaming video sites the plugin supports, and will only work in cases where those site would (typically this means you must live in the United States).

Nice idea but Boxee is still king here. No browse function is a deal breaker.

awesome! I'm downloading this for sure

The installer froze. Not a good sign.

Hopefully it'll work eventually.

Now if Hollywood would only get rid of geo-restrictions, then piracy would all but vanish.

The TV and movie execs just don't get it. They say, "we can't have Hulu in the rest of the world, because then they'll steal the content." Their backwards thinking and policy making only *encourages* and *necesitates* pirated versions of the content, because there's no other way to get it.

@bon
I totally agree. I just moved to India from Boston and cannor get any of my favourite shows here legally. So after years of legally buying my TV shows(season packs, episodes, etc) I have started looking for alternate ways to watch Heroes, 24, and Lost.

Wonder if this can be installed on the AppleTV?

I installed this and it worked for both my Netflix Instant Queue and Hulu. Auto-detected both profiles, so it worked very well.

I don't think this product is authored by Google. It's made available on the Google Code platform (much like sourceforge) but the actual creator is not affiliated with Google to my knowledge: http://code.google.com/u/@VhlWRFFWDxBGXQh6/

Wake me up when they get this for iPhone. wink

Feb 16, 09 - 11:52 am Comment from: Tom Harrington

This is not "Google's" plugin, and the description on the project page is not "according to Google". It's "according to the guy who started the project". Google code hosting (projects at code.google.com) is available to anyone with an open-source project. Describing this as Google's project is like saying that an email from a GMail address is an official Google statement.

I thought this was for Apple TV - that would have been interesting.

Who uses Front Row?????? And why?

Feb 16, 09 - 04:33 pm Comment from: rws

Just installed it and it works great.

I like that you can now at least pause the flick with the remote. It would be nicer if you could FF/RW. Maybe that will be in a future update.

Works but no video plays - all listed as "unavailable" - are the feeds limited to US viewing only (I'm in the UK). Happy viewing, J

Dang! And I just did the AppleTV patchstick thing!

Truthfully, Hulu is the about the only thing on Boxee with responsive onscreen controls, and the Boxee interface is, well, godawful.

On the upside, it can see and play movies and music on an airport extreme external hard drive without going through iTunes,

Works fine for my netflix instant queue but can't seem to find my queue on hulu. I can add the preset queues but they won't play because of my "click to flash" plugin even though hulu is white listed
