Hands-on with Apple’s new unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro

"We stormed the Macworld Expo '09 showroom floor immediately after the Philnote to get our hands on the only tangible product Apple announced today: the new unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro. Clearly, the built-in, longer-lasting battery technology that Apple designed for its largest notebook was the cause of its delayed release, as the rest of the notebook line was revamped in October. The new unibody structure and aesthetic that the 15-inch MacBook Pro and 13-inch MacBook gained a few months ago looks great on the 17-inch," David Chartier reports for Ars Technica.

"After playing with the 17-inch MacBook Pro for a couple of minutes, it pretty much feels like one would expect. Apple's new unibody construction makes the machine feel even sturdier, and its slight loss in weight is an appreciated, though hardly noticeable, bonus," Chartier reports.

Just out of curiosity - I may have missed it in the various write-ups - are the hard drive and memory easily replaceable / upgradable by the user? My guess is no - the machine is more like the Air than the 15 Inch MacBook Pro.

Nah, it was so Phil would have something to announce; and, that's why MWSF is no more. Having to delay or pre-release products to match MWSF's schedule and not Apple's is no way to run a business!

@Reality Check:

It's actually an inventory issue. They don't really want to carry the "matte" (or anti-glare) screen, due to their product line simplification strategy. But there is a demand, so they are compromising, but charging $50 for the extra production-line & inventory expenses.

It's amazing to me how so many people spout off when they clearly don't understand even the most basic of business concepts. But that's par-for-the-course for you, Reality Check.
