Heavy demand outweighs iPhone 3G supply
Monday, July 21, 2008 - 09:12 AM EST

"Apple Inc.'s iPhone 3G supply dropped dramatically over the weekend, as the company's own inventory tool showed fewer than 9% of its stores had any phones to sell on Sunday," Gregg Keizer reports for Computerworld.

"As of 11 a.m. Eastern time, only 16 of Apple's U.S. retail stores, or 8.5% of the 188 total stores, listed iPhone 3Gs available. That figure is significantly down from Thursday, when 50 stores, or 27%, indicated that they had iPhones in stock," Keizer reports.

"And unlike last week, when as many as 13 stores said that they had all three iPhone 3G models for sale -- the 8GB version in black, and the 16GB version in both white and black -- by Sunday, no Apple store had all in inventory," Keizer reports.

"Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray & Co., said in a Thursday interview that it would take Apple two to four weeks to place orders with its suppliers, receive more iPhones and restock the depleted inventory," Keizer reports. "AT&T Inc.'s 1,200 retail stores, meanwhile, were almost completely out iPhone inventory as early as last Tuesday."

A nice problem to have...

The fact that it is hard to get a 3G will make it even more desirable. It is a money maker all the way around.

completly sold out here in germany (though they only got 20.000 units for all of germany!) and rumored to not being available before october!

Jul 21, 08 - 08:18 am Comment from: erk

all the AT&T;stores are talking 2-3 weeks here, and thats only if you preorder

Jul 21, 08 - 08:19 am Comment from: Randian

I don't know, folks. Market movers REALLY hate money being left on the table; when massive numbers of people walk away from Apple/AT&T;stores with money still in their pockets, AAPL seldom moves up.

Jul 21, 08 - 08:38 am Comment from: Something rotten?

@Randian

Ofcourse.
Best case would be to have enough for all customers.
However, selling 1.000.000 units in 3 days... that's serious demand!

Even now, it feels even more exclusive owning an iPhone 3G, when everybody can buy one, but can't - heh grin

Got my 16GB Saturday morning. Can't believe I got to that store at 7:20AM...and they don't open until 10AM!

Softbank's computer system crashed due to too many stores trying to activate phones. Finally walked out the store with my new toy at 1:15PM. That was a long day.

Got my 16GB upgrade on Friday... Battery drains fast but doesn't really bother me - anyone who's anyone has an iPod cable and USB port somewhere... my friend even has one on his boat!

Amazing device, I'm glad I have mine, and glad I didn't get the white one (I saw them in the Apple Store on Saturday and they get VERY grubby looking, especially around the SIM slot).

Jul 21, 08 - 08:48 am Comment from: Something rotten?

@Jamie

Turn off location services, and only using when needed. The GPS seems to eat alot.

Just need to buy a powercabel for the car.

Anemic production runs and press hype can have this effect.

Just my $0.02

Hi Something rotten?,

Yeh I am doing what you suggested and it has helped, cheers for the tip...

...also, things will improve over time. Apple have a knack of constantly tweaking things, releasing updates, improving efficiency.

Well, someone can have mine. I am thinking of returning it to the Apple Store and resuming usage of my first generation iPhone. Two reasons: First, AT&T;is being disingenuous about the availability of 3G. It is spotty at best. I barely ever get it and the phone defaults to EDGE speed (with the little "E") unless I travel into Alameda County, CA. I live in Contra Costa County (Pittsburg, Antioch). So, I see no point in paying for 3G (extra cost), when I can rarely even get it. So, the extra cost is not justified for me.

Second, the OTA sync on (MobileMe) has been grossly unreliable anyway.

Congratulations, Apple, you were completely unprepared.

I got my iPhone last Friday. I waited 4 hours in line at the Apple Store on West 14th Street in Manhattan. It was well worth the long wait and baking in the sun. The Apple Store employees were giving away ice-cold bottled water. I thought that was very nice! They were calling in 3 people at a time to go up to the 3rd floor of the store. Each person is greeted by an Apple store employee and ushered to the 3rd floor. And then that person takes you to a spot in the store where you can sit and relax for a couple of minutes while the employee goes to the back and hands you a nicely designed iPhone shopping bag. After that, the same employee asks you a few questions, takes your credit card info, looks at your ID, and in 15 minutes, it was all done! A breeze! The whole process reminded me of waiting in line to go to Heaven, and when you come up at the front of the line, you get ushered in by your own personal angel to walk up the stairs made of clouds. The angel sits you in a spot somewhere in the garden in front of the pearly gates to ask you about all the nice things you've done on earth while still alive, the angel verifies it in her angel communicator, smiles and nods agreeably and then hands you your key to your new house in heaven! ( Aaaaaahhhhhhh... < a choir of angels sing.>)

Some people were telling "Apple is a niche affair"... Nowadays they are blissed to be of that so called "niche" themselves... Lot's were critisising Macs... now they are proud to have one!
This is the way history turns... wink

I agree that going into your settings and turning off Location Services (which should really be called the GPS radio) saves tons of battery life. The best part is that if you're in maps and you actually click a button that needs GPS, it will ask if you want to turn the GPS radio back on right then and there. No need to go back into the preferences.

On Saturday I got extremely lucky and picked up a 16 GB white iPhone at probably one of the only stores in Germany that still had some. In "some" I really mean 2. I pre-ordered my iPhone back in mid-June, and every T-Mobile rep I've talked to since july 11th told me that it will be a long time before Germany gets some new iPhone stock.

On a side note: except for the lack of MMS (I found myself needing MMS for the first time just 2 days ago) voice dialling and a spam filter app, this is the sickest cell phone I have ever owned, and I've owned quite a few over the years. Wow!

"Sick" as in "really, really cool" wink

Today, Monday July 20th at 1:00 PM the Fort Lauderdale Galleria Mall store had "a limited supply" of iPhones.

At least that is what one of the store employees told me while I was there buying an extra USB power cable for my iPhone 3G.

I plan on pre-ordering a 16 gig black 3G model from an AT&T;store sometime this week. I came into the Apple fold with a PowerComputing PowerCenter PowerPC 604 120mhz when System 7.5 was around. Back then I could never have guessed Apple would make such a strong comeback like it has. It's very unexpected and welcome... with consumers benefitting by having an out from a stagnant system which Windows still is today. I find it uncanny that Bill Gates left right at the moment that Apple seems destined to overtake Microsoft. It's like he knew like he downloaded a Brain 2.0 or something.

Picked up my 16 gig white model last Friday at the Walt Whitman mall in Melville. I originally went to that store because they were the only ones on Long Island that had the 16gig black according to the list of stores that still had units. They ran out of black units by late morning so I got a plastic static screen protector and a black case problem solved. I gave my Edge phone to my sister. She is nopw on a month to month contract with Sprint, she was spending $150 a month on a standard Spring phone with the coast to coast radio. Hear that all you whiners complaining about Roger's cost of service? The thing about it was the phone service quality was not even that good. Tons of dropped calls and lack of service areas.
