High-quality Apple AirPort Extreme 802.11n unboxing photos

Apple Store“Apple Inc. this week began to unleash the next-generation of Apple Wi-Fi, with the first shipments of its AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wireless Base Station making their way to select online customers and company retail stores,” AppleInsider reports.

AppleInsider reports, “If you’re like us, you probably placed an order for one of these promising wireless network performance enhancers during the week of Macworld. And if you’re like us, you’re probably still waiting for that order to ship.”

“Even though our online order was placed way back when, it’s not slated to leave Taiwan until around February 14. At the same time, however, we were able to swing by a local Apple retail store an pluck one off the shelf,” AppleInsider reports.

  1. We currently have a Linksys router with our cable modem plugged into the router. It gives me access to 1 printer because there are no USB ports on the router. If I bought a Airport Extreme could I use a hub and plug in multiple devices? Like 2 printers and an external harddrive for wireless backup?

  2. No wonder we Mac users were recently called Macsturbators. Pictures of retail box opening, starting with box before and AFTER shrink wrap removal! What’s next? Sunday morning drives to nearest Apple Store for iMass, complete with live video stream from 1 Infinite Loop?

Folks, just open the darn box and start using what’s in it. Spare the rest of humanity detailed shots of power supplies, will you?

  3. The unit is certainly attractive enough on its own, but why couldn’t they have done like the AppleTV and integrated the power supply? They obviously already know how to do it. Who wants to deal with another frickin’ power brick? Cinema Displays, Mac Mini, now Airport Extreme – all nicely styled on their own, but all putting the “extra stuff” outside and pretending it doesn’t count.

  4. Well JanKo, part of the explanation is probably in the Cult of Mac, but then again, Apple’s gadgets are design products, starting with their packaging. It’s not every time you see such a sweet-looking power source. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  5. No wall mount? This sucks! I’ve got holes where the old Airport Extreme is and now it only works sitting on a desktop! I guess I could use some double stick tape though! Also, a bit disappointed that there’s no external antenne port. Now for “N” standard rage extender you’ll have to wait for a new Aiport Express or buy two Extremes.

  6. This thing is total shit, I got one yesterday at the Apple Store. The range is horrible I get better range with my Netgear, there is a driver issue with the Mac Book Pro’s an it will not work with Paralells or bootcamp. I called Apple Care and am told that they are working on the issues, thats just patheic.

This thing is going back tomorrow, look for it on the bargain rack.

    BUYER BEWARE!

  7. The Apple Wireless Router is marketed as MAC + PC, so it SHOULD work with Windows in bootcamp, paralells is a whole different thing, I had hoped it would work, my netgear works for all of those scenarios. The range is horrible unless your right in front of it there is a horrible connection. Also its still 2.4 Ghz do it interferes with my cordless phone (For some reason I thought it was at a higher freq) I will just buy a new cordless but still the range is horrible.

  8. Ah, yes, the “First Adopter” syndrome is evident. Anyone with abnormally high expectations who purchases a new product without adequately considering the pros and cons or reading the reviews (much less the instruction manual) is bound to suffer self inflicted frustrations. The “First Adopter” syndrome is also known as “Got mo’ money than sense” phenomenon.

  9. Buyer beware-If you are using a totally N network, you have the option of using the 5.4ghz frequency.
If using combined G+N-you are limited to 2.4ghz because that is the frequency of G all G products.
    Plus it’s Wireless-not cordless.

  10. I was referring to my household phone being cordless, it’s on the 2.4 GHZ freq. I was not aware I could run 5.4 but if I have to run in N only that could present a problem I use a Mac Book Pro (1st Gen) so there is no option for he N, according to the folks at the Apple Store.

Thank you for your input Nekogam

  11. From the Apple Web Site:
“AirPort Extreme (802.11n): USB storage device supported formats and protocols

You can connect USB-based storage devices to an AirPort Extreme (802.11n). Learn which formats and protocols are supported.

The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) supports USB storage devices that have a block size of 512 bytes, and are formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS-plus), FAT16, or FAT32.

The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) shares storage devices based on the format used to initialize the storage device. For example, if HFS-plus formatting was used, AFP and SMB/CIFS protocols are used to share the device on the network. If FAT16 or FAT32 was used, SMB/CIFS protocols are used.

Note: Use AirPort Disk Utility to discover and mount AirPort Extreme-based volumes over the network.”

  12. Hmmm, If Apple doesn’t offer a solution, I hope there will be 3rd Party solutions to get N into 1st Gen Macbook pro’s soon. Would kinda suck not to be able to. Did the interior change that much just from moving from the Core Duo to the Core 2 Duo? You would think the new N wireless card would fit……
