High school teens say they’ll shell out $500 for Apple iPhone

Apple Store“Apple Inc. continues to enjoy strong interest from high school students in both its iPod and new iPhone, according to results from a recent Piper Jaffray survey,” The Associated Press reports.

“The study, which surveyed buying patterns and brand preferences of about 500 teenagers nationwide, showed market share for the iPod rose to 82 percent in spring 2007 from 79 percent in fall 2006,” AP reports.

AP reports, “The study also showed that 84 percent of students surveyed had heard of the iPhone, a wireless Internet device and cell phone. Furthermore, 25 percent said they would shell out $500 to buy the device, which is set for release in the U.S. in June.”

  1. High School kids have enormous “disposible income” since many already have room and board paid for and a fund for college, basically all their money and income is disposible.

Those that can scrape up the change for it I can definitely see going for something like this.. huge status symbol.. very few things have the cachet as an expensive phone.

  2. So far the iPhone looks awesome! The proof will be in the pudding! I have no doubt in Apples quality; I am more worried about AT&T. I had Ameritech, Cingular and AT&T in the past and had horrible customer service, constant call quality issues and just hell all around. I am generally an early adopter on everything Apple but I may wait a few weeks to see how the crow flies!

I love Apple Products but I need my phone to work as expected, it’s a large part of my business…

By the way Steve Ballmer you’re an idiot!

  3. Umm, more like I will shell out 500 for the iPhone. You think my children actually do anything worth while. I have to spoil them and give them everything they want so that they are are “popular”. Do you really think a 16 year old should be driving a BMW, I do. Do you know how cool my son/daughter is compared to me when I was his age? Sure, I am up to my eyeballs in debt so that my son/daughter can be coon and popular, but that doesn’t matter since my son/daughter is cool and popular.

  4. I am buying two right out-of-the-gate. One for my wife and the other for myself. Hey, we’re Yuppie DINKS (Double Income No Kids). Why the h3ll wouldn’t we?! Besides, I have been using Apple computers since ’86 and have almost always been an early adapter; this is the one occasion, I think, where early adopters will outpace the stragglers.

This is a very exciting time to be a Mac Zealot!

  5. You dashit, ChrissyOne! Man, if I weren’t married… but I am and my wife rocks, so… where was I?

Maybe some day I’ll be loved and respected as much as you… but prob not. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”downer” style=”border:0;” />

  6. I love the smell of fried troll in the morning! Do you really think that the iPhone is about fashion, numbskull? If it were, Apple wouldn’t spend five years developing FASHION. They’d say “Hello Moto” and start pumping out FASHIONABLE c*apstastical phones like the world was ending tomorrow. They didn’t do that. They invested tons of time, money, and effort into developing the iPhone in order to deliver a superior user experience. You know, experience? Like user interface, MMIs, and trash like that? It’s the reason why the iPod is what it is — a success. Your inability to grasp that is a source of never-ending amusement.

  7. Mikal in NYC:

500 is what’s known in marketing things as a ‘sample frame’. The strange thing about sample frames is that fewer respondents can actually be more accurate than more respondents (i.e 500 as opposed to 5000).

By the way, the wife and I are both getting iPhones and I have a 12 year old son who is desperate for one. The wildfire predictions look correct as far as I can see.

  8. MDN has it wrong again…..

Highschool teens are convinced they can get their PARENTS to shell out $500 for a phone. Especially the female ones that refer to the parent doing the spending as “Daddy”.

This survey is only complete if the parents are interviewed too.

Stop chugging the Kool-Aid, MDN. The pro-iphone stories are getting weaker and weaker. I guess Apple will actually have to convert the iPhone from vaporware to an actual product or Piper will be reduced to asking lab mice how they feel about the iPhone.

This is the problem with premature specification (that’s Steve Job’s term).

    Just my $0.02

  9. Yeah, and high school kids want to end hunger, too. Then they find out there is work involved……

    wiseguy
that babe with the green earrings and iBook T shirt is a little TOO hot for a page of minors.
