Houston Chronicle reviews Apple iMac: No Windows PC can compare

Apple StoreApple’s “entire iMac family was updated with faster processors, bigger hard drives and more powerful graphics cards,” Dwight Silverman reports for The Houston Chronicle.

“The model I tested is at the high end of the line, boasting a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor running at 2.8 GHz, a 1-terabyte hard drive, 4 gigabytes of memory and an ATI Radeon HD 5750 graphics adapter with 1 GB of its own memory. It sells for $1,999, which seems like a lot,” Silverman reports. “I went looking for comparable Windows machines, but there’s nothing out there with this big a screen and this type of processor in an all-in-one.”

Silver man reports, “As you can imagine by the specifications, this is one fast machine. While Macs have never had a reputation for being gaming systems, this model excels at that. I installed Valve’s Steam gaming platform – which just recently began offering Mac support – as well as a native version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The iMac handled them superbly, with the eye candy turned up to 11.”

  1. PC’s are for Cheapies and they’re crap. I had to use an HP laptop of my sisters to set up her Comcast account and it was awful! I don’t like any laptop trackpads much (except the new Magic Trackpad) but this one was complete frustrating crap. My sister, who works for the government, eyed my iPad enviously as I was able to do so much with it, and vowed to get one and if asked for a computer replacement would ask for a Mac Book Pro. Now that people are being asked which platform they prefer in many cases maybe she’ll get one. And I laugh at IT guys who think Windows is secure and Macs are security risks! What are these guys smoking anyway?

  2. Dwight Silverman used to be a complete Windows dweeb. He had joined the bright side of the force ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  3. Let the Games begin seriously playing in Mac’s ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> and watch it take off! Steam is going to make barrels of Apple money with it’s games.
The Intel chip relationship has paid off!!

Give me Galaga and Star Wars!!!

    Buy AAPL stocks!

  4. The author says $1,999 seems like a lot. I just did a quick search for 27″ monitors with 2560 x 1440 resolution. The only one I found was from Dell for $999. That’s just for a monitor. Add in the rest of the equipment, plus OS X, plus iLife, plus peace of mind and ease of use (I’ve just been using Windows 7 for the first time, and it’s no prize, folks), and two grand is a friggin’ steal.

  5. The $499 BD-C8000 is the first portable Blu-ray player that can handle the new 3D discs; while the 10.3-inch screen is 2D only, you can take it somewhere that has a 3D-ready display.
Dammmmm ! this sounds cool! (and cheap)
So I hope Apple has something coming up soon that has something to do with 3D. Panasonic has just come out with a consumer 3D camera. $1400 vs. $21,000 (pro), that I believe only works with Windows 7 for editing. It’s happening, It’s here. 3D. Check out the Panasonic plasma 3d Rome demo.
So…Apple? Wavelets? 4k 3d cam? Well? I want something exciting to make me upgrade from my G5.

  6. I was looking at buying a new PC 3 years ago and I was specifically looking at all-in-one’s because I was tired of my 2 year old pushing the power button on my Dell. I compared all-in-one’s that were coming out from Dell, HP, Sony, Gateway, and Apple. The iMac was not the most expensive. It fell right in the middle. That combined with no desire to buy anything with Vista on it got me to buy my first Mac. The only problem I have with it is that it still run really well and I have no excuse to go out and buy a new one.
