How to make iPhone ringtones for free
Friday, September 07, 2007 - 03:15 PM EST

gryphondwb's Xanga Site has laid out instructions for creating free iPhone ringtones and syncing them via iTunes. It's simple and it works, we tested it.

Instructions:
1. Duplicate and rename any AAC file (or convert other file types to AAC via iTunes).
2. In the Finder, select it and choose “Get Info” from the File menu
3. Change the file's extension to .M4R
4. If it is already in your iTunes library, delete the original from your iTunes Library (re-import the original back to your library when you're done)
5. Double-click your .M4R file to automatically add it to your iTunes library
6. Click on your iPhone in your iTunes "DEVICES" list and select the "Ringtones" tab - you should now see your new ringtone
7. Sync to add it to your your iPhone

You can use another application to edit your song, add fades, etc. before proceeding from step 3 to create a "custom" iPhone ringtone.

We'll see if Apple closes this hole with a future update.

More info, screenshots, and directions for Windows here.

Then there is the Pavlov inspired Human Beat Box method where you train yourself to imitate a human beat box whenever you here your iPhone ring.

This method is espacially cool if you like RunDMC, FatBoys, 3rdBase, and/or old DOug E. Fresh tunes for you ringers.

Just my $0.02

fantastic!! Thank you thank you thank you (not that I've checked that it works..)

Sep 07, 07 - 02:35 pm Comment from: Twisted Multi-Touch Freak

Nice!
Now I can have my phone belt out "When I think about you I touch myself. I don't want anybody else. Oh no, oh no, oh no".
That is so sassy!

One other thing that might need to happen, it does sometimes with Audiobook format, you might need to change the TYPE field using a finder utility such as File Buddy. The new TYPE will probably be, and I'm guessing this as I don't have an iPhone and thus no ringtones, "M4R ". DON'T MISS THE SPACE AT THE END.

Hello, MDN! It is properly spelled "Windoze" or "Winblows".

Thank you.

thank the goddess!

...i mean what use is a touch screen, visual voice mail, and a real internet experience on a phone if i can't have some shitty american idol contestant screeching out crap whenever someone calls me.....

MW: there are 2 "types" of people in the world, those that divide everything into 2 categories and those who don't...

I can't believe ringtones are this popular. i guess a lot of girls and queers like them

Sep 07, 07 - 03:17 pm Comment from: Unfettered

I also take the AAC files into GarageBand to boost the volume.

Also, there are some good sound samples in GaragaBand including a loud cell phone ring, which I also converted to an iPhone ringtone.

Oh, and I found a dentist drill sfx in GB which I've applied to my mother-in-law's contact!

Sep 07, 07 - 03:22 pm Comment from: MadMac

Too Fsking cool!!!

Just made Comfortably Numb my ringtone..."Hello, is there anybody in there?" Used GarageBand to select just the beginning beat to the end of the verse above, with a cool reverb at the end.

I can't believe that Apple let this happen (unless it was on purpose figuring most people will just pay the 99 cents).

@ me: Took me several times to get it right (renaming in finder, importing into iTunes without iPhone connected, etc.)

Sep 07, 07 - 03:25 pm Comment from: AJ

Tried it. it's not re-importing back the song. Got the other steps to work but the reimporting portion.

Sep 07, 07 - 03:27 pm Comment from: sylvan

Anybody figure out how to get the ringtones off of iTunes?

Huh? What kind of sweeping generalization, homophobic sexist comment is that?

>people< like ringtones. full stop

Sep 07, 07 - 03:29 pm Comment from: No Squirt For You

MadMac: It also depends on how much you think your time is worth!

Sep 07, 07 - 03:35 pm Comment from: lbuschjr

Anyone know how to take the iPhone's ringtones, import to GarageBand, and boost the volume?

Sep 07, 07 - 03:44 pm Comment from: Alex

You have to re-create your iTunes library if you want to delete them. Delete the .m4r files from inside the iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones folder, then follow these steps.

...and don't forget the fart noises!

Actually, this is the one thing that offended me in Apple's release yesterday: The concept that I must pay 99 cents to use a piece of a song that I already own as a ringtone for my phone. This is complete and utter horseshit and there is absolutely no excuse for it.

I'm no hippy and even I think that's fair use...

Way to feed the troll there, spaceMan. That was some pretty weak Troll-fu too. You should be ashamed.

Sep 07, 07 - 04:15 pm Comment from: @Unfettered

I was thinking of using the Wicked witch theme from the Wizard of Oz soundtrack for mine!

If I am having fun with my time, I'm getting my money's worth. Even screwing around like this, bet my time earns me more than you. Not that I'm conceited or anything, just trying to jab back after your elementary comment.

Sep 07, 07 - 04:32 pm Comment from: John

FYI, I found that you need to use small m4a, not caps (M4A) for this to work on a Mac.

Sep 07, 07 - 04:51 pm Comment from: Whatever

Damn that works great... Thanks all

When you re-import in itunes they don't show up in the library. They show up when you plug your iPhone in under the ringtone tab..

Sep 07, 07 - 05:26 pm Comment from: marcus arelius

is anybody having a problem importing more than 5 ringtones to the iPhone? i went through and converted 10 songs to .m4r and only 5 of them came through. all 10 showed up in iTunes, but 5 of 'em are on my phone even though i had "sync all ringtones" selected.

thoughts?

Sep 07, 07 - 05:28 pm Comment from: rolf

does the M4R trick work for any Mac users?! i doesn't for me.
any tips, thanks, r

Your phone is ringing! Your phone is ringing!

Free ringtone.

Sep 07, 07 - 06:32 pm Comment from: J

I'm probably missing something simple - I can see my ringtone in the ringtone tab and then I synch my phone. why can't i see the rington on my phone?

Sep 07, 07 - 06:46 pm Comment from: J

I figured out my own problem with the ringtone - it needed to be shorten before it would synch. This is a great technique.

Sep 07, 07 - 07:06 pm Comment from: DOES it WORK?

I can't imagine so.

Well not all the time.
Most ACC audio from Apple is DRM.

I could in reverse TRY, an old mp3... convert it to ACC format usinf QT PRO and do as instructed here. However, I have not purchased the iPhone yet. It is not here in Canada.

So - can anyone say for sure this ACTUALLY works.

thx

Sep 07, 07 - 07:09 pm Comment from: No Squirt For You

MadMac: I agree with you about having fun. Enjoying life is what matters.

P.S. Comparing you to me in this anonymous environment is just a little weird and slightly creepy. But still, jab on. It's entertaining!

Sep 07, 07 - 07:11 pm Comment from: Sorry... I understand it now

It is mainly a RENAME deal.

COOL.

THIS is a similar work around to those who have the JVC HHD cameras.

The .MOD files can be easily seen when RENAMED with .MPEG or .MPG. The digital video camera produces MPEG2 video nicely. Best to buy the MPEG2 QT plug-in.

many thx Xanga!!!!!

Sep 07, 07 - 07:14 pm Comment from: it was this...

"You can use another application to edit your song, add fades, etc. before proceeding from step 3 to create a "custom" iPhone ringtone."

THIS PART I do not agree with... as this will require re-encoding... something that CAN ONLY occur if you BROKE the musics DRM in the ACC.

Even if you paid for the song. I don't think this is allowed or can occur with "another audio editing application".

CAN anyone TEST this theory... I would love to KNOW...
thx

Sep 07, 07 - 08:05 pm Comment from: Mac4lfe

I can't believe how easy that was. Loving it.

Sep 07, 07 - 08:52 pm Comment from: Pat in KC

Nope not working for me, have tried several times with songs bought and no bought via iTunes, oh well, I'll pay to do it, its still cheaper than the ringtones were on my Verizon fone.

Sep 08, 07 - 01:19 am Comment from: nineboy

i tried it a bunch of times with bought, non bought, and a garage band thing i made.
didnt work
i got as far as seeing it in the sync window, but it would not load it because an m4R is not playable on my iPhone
but i did download the new itunes that came out today.
maybe they already fixed it with the new version 7.4.1

Oh well, too bad so sad

Sep 08, 07 - 07:04 am Comment from: ポール

This didn't work for me, and I didn't update the version of iTunes... I am updating it now, for this manip doesn't work...

Hum, thanks... For nothing...

Sep 08, 07 - 10:51 am Comment from: Mittens Romney

This worked briefly for me, but then iTunes update 7.4.1 seems to have taken away the functionality. :(

Sep 08, 07 - 04:08 pm Comment from: bubuh

There is a closed captioning view option... EU finally getting movies? Hope to sync divx movies with cc in apple tv...

Sep 08, 07 - 04:56 pm Comment from: indy358

7.4.1 took mine away too.

I have yet to be able to create a ringtone with itunes. I don't see the icons or anything. What gives? Is there some special trick I don't know about?

Sep 08, 07 - 10:47 pm Comment from: Aldebaran

Yep, iTunes 7.4.1 took them away ("wrong format" or something like that). I had used some of the .aiff sound effects files that are included in the iLife installation. Just do a Spotlight search for "iLife Sound Effects." The conversion, renaming, and syncing had worked flawlessly until 7.4.1 :-(

Sep 09, 07 - 12:06 am Comment from: Ricky Ricardo

@shen

Actually, there are 10 kinds of people, those that understand binary, and those that don't.

Sep 09, 07 - 01:55 am Comment from: Whatever

Just rename the file that is in the ringtones folder from m4r to m4a and it works again..

Sep 09, 07 - 03:33 am Comment from: indy358

@Whatever
I tried that and it didn't work. At least not on my computer.

Sep 09, 07 - 06:40 am Comment from: steve campbel

i use http://www.create-ringtone.com to make and send custom ringtones, wallpapers, MP3's and Videos for FREE to cell phones around the world

Sep 09, 07 - 07:59 am Comment from: FiveEasySteps

This all goes to show just how easy Apple products are to use compared to Windows products.

Sep 09, 07 - 01:01 pm Comment from: sterl1i

I tried this, at first, just to see if it worked. It did!! However, how do I delete a ringtone?

Sep 11, 07 - 06:19 am Comment from: late nite hacker

just tried it and it does NOT work. i guess maybe apple patched this hole. anyone else having trouble making it work?

Sep 11, 07 - 11:30 am Comment from: christina
