Huge Apple logo formed out of rocks in river at University of Hartford (with photo)
Wednesday, October 03, 2007 - 04:37 PM EDT

&MacDailyNews reader Alex Goldman tells us: "At the University of Hartford, we have a tradition where club members and other students spell out or form rocks into words or shapes that can be seen from the bridge [over the Hog River] that connects the Residential Side to the Academic Side of the campus.

Goldman writes via email, "This morning I noticed something that made me 'Think Different.' Apparently, the Apple Inc. logo was laid out in the rocks on the side of the bridge.

MacDailyNews Note: This is not a Photoshop job. The rocks are actually there in that shape, independent sources have confirmed.

Goldman snapped a quick photo:

MacDailyNews Take: Can you say "mindshare?" We knew you could. Steve Ballmer will be dispatching a team of engineers along with a pickup full of plastic rocks out to the University of Washington's on-campus drainage canal to try to gin up some fake grassroots enthusiasm for Microsoft in 3 -2 -1...

Wonder how long it will be before some Windows users go and destroy it?

Can you say "mindshare?" We knew that you could.

How huge is huge?

The rocks seem to cover an area 15ft x 10ft. Now if they were 75ft x 50ft, that would be huge, huger, hugest, Beau Geste. Huggy bear.

[Wonder how long it will be before some Windows users go and destroy it?]

It'll be gone be tomorrow morn, and replaced with a nearby 'Windows' crop circle.

Oct 03, 07 - 04:46 pm Comment from: schmluss

You mean a Windows crop Squircle?

Oct 03, 07 - 04:48 pm Comment from: shiftOpt k

nice… wonder how long it took to lay out all those rocks, and you know that water is COLD

Oct 03, 07 - 04:49 pm Comment from: Bah

They did that because it's one of the easiest logos to do with rocks. Try doing the MS logo and they would be working on it till 2010, after 5 betas and 3 SPs.

Oct 03, 07 - 05:02 pm Comment from: ABMer 001

Yes, I meant...

It'll be gone by tomorrow morning, being replaced with a nearby 'Windows' Crop Squircle. Which is actually four Squircles, each painted a different color. Because we all know — like the new Zunes — the MS gang are ahead in colors!

MW: Quality! hehe.

Oct 03, 07 - 05:07 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

I can't tell from the photo if the apple logo is 3 feet or 300 feet across. Anyone know?

Oct 03, 07 - 05:07 pm Comment from: Shogun

I'd like to see them try that with the Zune logo...

(MW:run!)

Oct 03, 07 - 05:10 pm Comment from: Apple legal department

Wonder how long it will be before Apple's legal department contacts the university about unauthorized use of a company logo!

Oct 03, 07 - 05:13 pm Comment from: kirkgray

"You mean a Windows crop Squircle?"

No, it would be a Windows Squirt Squircle™.

Oct 03, 07 - 05:16 pm Comment from: Woody

Why do so many people instantly say "Photoshop fake" for every single freakin' picture on the internet, as suggested by MDN's note? I mean, jeez, it's not like it's difficult at all to place some relatively small rocks in a stream to form an Apple logo. I bet these very same people are totally credulous about other things, like the YouTube Haiti UFOs.

Oct 03, 07 - 05:21 pm Comment from: Bandit Bill

Well worth the effort wink and probably a lot of fun to make.
It's well proportioned too.

I like it. grin

Oct 03, 07 - 05:22 pm Comment from: -hh

I'm waiting for a crop circle grin

Oct 03, 07 - 05:23 pm Comment from: IrishSoon

Of your if MS tried this they would first need for the stream to be upgraded as well as any of the accompanying drivers. Of course you could always install the home version of rock logo but then you would miss out on a lot of cool features like hammer and door stop.

Oct 03, 07 - 05:30 pm Comment from: McFly

Wow. Looks like a puddle with a few pebbles in there. Alert the media.

That's actually a real apple logo on their new product.

Introducing the new iRiver!

Perfect for swimming, canoeing, and fishing. With a flick of the finger, you can create rapids and go white water rafting. You can even watch movies on the surface.

All in a river that is only 6 inches deep! It's...incredible.

I think when you get a chance to stick you toes in it, you'll agree, we re-invented the river.

I take this bridge every day to class, and I can already say, it's already been defaced. But it is real, there's different designs all the time

"Wonder how long it will be before some Windows users go and destroy it?"

They aren't that ambitious.

Oct 03, 07 - 08:59 pm Comment from: Chuck U Farley

Hands down the MOST WORTHLESS STORY I have EVER seen on MDN!

Oct 03, 07 - 09:06 pm Comment from: Walter Chillum

My wife went to this university and she doesn't remember this tradition. Then again as the river flows, so do the sands of time and a lot of water has flowed down the Hog River since my wife was in attendance.

Oct 03, 07 - 09:21 pm Comment from: Think

Click on the pic to see it bigger, then notice the leaves in the water next to some of the rocks. There are some big ones that took some effort.

Inquiring minds DON'T want to know.

As for the rock logo, the pilgrims did it.

Slow news day, huh?

Just my $0.02

Oct 04, 07 - 12:32 pm Comment from: Lardlad

How did they do that? They must have had help from alien life forms.

Oct 04, 07 - 12:41 pm Comment from: Lurker_PC

They could do a tribute to the 360 by creating a circle of rocks. Of course all of the rocks would have to be painted red.

Peace.

This is so funny that UHART is on here. I can tell everyone here it's not photoshop. I go to UHART and there are always interesting things shaped with those rocks.

Oct 04, 07 - 09:27 pm Comment from: StrangeButTrue

It's not rocks, it's actually made out of bricked iPhones and locking up iMacs.

Oct 05, 07 - 08:30 am Comment from: brett

i went to UHA and can verify this is a tradition. Around rush season all the different pledges for each frat/sor will put their respective insignias in the river made out of the rocks. its a river that connects the housing side and academic side of campus so most everyone who lives on campus sees this

Oct 06, 07 - 01:38 pm Comment from: ashley

i went to the university of hartford and this is something that they frats and such do every so often, they have done some amazing things with it usually involving their letters but this is no small matter here, it is decent sized prolly like 7-12 feet top to bottom, and why the hell would apple sue them for using their logo? if anything the universtiy should be praised for free advertising of their products!
