“Hulu, the popular and free online video hub, has some things to celebrate as it heads into its third year,” Brian Stelter and Brad Stone report for The New York Times.
“The site, a venture of NBC Universal, the News Corporation and the Walt Disney Company, has been profitable for two quarters, Jason Kilar, Hulu’s chief executive, said in an interview on Monday,” Stelter and Stone report. “Hulu has successfully brought online TV into the mainstream.”
“And now it appears set to move beyond standard computer screens with an application for Apple’s iPad, four people briefed on its plans said,” Stelter and Stone report. “People briefed on Hulu’s plan believe it may test the subscription approach with its iPad app. They could not say when such an application might be available.”
Stelter and Stone report, “Mr. Kilar declined to talk about any future Hulu products, but he waxed enthusiastic about the coming wave of ultra-portable tablet computers like the iPad. ‘Typically media consumption in the house was confined to the living room or home office,’ he said. Tablets, he added, ‘allow consumers to serendipitously discover and consume media in every room of the house.'”
MacDailyNews Take: There is nothing like the iPad. The coming wave will be made up of iPad pretenders. Just like the Mac pretenders, iPod pretenders, and iPhone pretenders.
Stelter and Stone continue, “Hulu, based in Santa Monica, Calif., has also failed so far to deliver an application for the iPhone, although consumers have been clamoring for that too, and such an app has been rumored for a year. Mr. Kilar explained the absence of Hulu mobile apps by saying he has focused on the core Web business. To get permission to move content onto other platforms ‘takes a lot of wrangling,’ said a Hulu employee who requested anonymity because the company did not authorize him to speak on behalf of the site. The employee said it was ‘like trying to pass the health care bill.'”

I want a Hulu app that will stream to my AppleTV
That Hulu employee seems to be confusing “wrangling” for “ramming.”
well, chances are Hulu will make it on there, just like youtube did… it’s probably all a question of legal negotiations.
‘That Hulu employee seems to be confusing “wrangling” for “ramming.”‘
Or Rahming.
Rahm Wants To Be Mayor Of Chicago…
Great place for him.
“Tablets, he added, ‘allow consumers to serendipitously discover and consume media in every room of the house.'”
House? How about “Planet”? That’s the difference between a PC and a Mac. The limits of their thinking.
I don’t know if I’ll ever own an iPad, but I could really use a new iPhone.
I hope there will be an iPhone-compatible Hulu app.
That’s an incongruent reference Ron. Hulu app – Rahm Emmanual
Why do I feel like everyone is trying to make money off us iPad owners?
@original shiva.
Absolutely right. But little Ronnie enjoys messing about with his off-topic Retardiican tainted drivel.
It looks like nobody noticed how the idea is that the iPad app should be subscription-based. In other words, never mind that the web-based offering is free with ads. We’ll just assume that Apple customers are ALL willing to pay for ad-free experience and won’t even bother with the free-with-ads solution, even though that’s what made our web-based offering profitable.
In other words, even if Hulu comes to iPad, it won’t be the Hulu that everyone is familiar with right now.
“allow consumers to serendipitously discover and consume media in every room of the house.'”
That’s an euphemism for “You can watch it while taking a shit.”
‘Typically media consumption in the house was confined to the living room or home office. Tablets allow consumers to serendipitously discover and consume media in every room of the house.’
No wonder NBC is crappy when run by dimwits like this.
‘To get permission to move content onto other platforms…’
‘Other platforms’? What are you smoking? Hulu is a web-based streaming service. The iPad has a web browser built in. IT’S NOT A NEW PLATFORM. Whenever you have a device that can access the web, it should be treated the same. No matter if the stream end s up on a monitor, laptop screen, TV or hand held iPad screen. That needs to go into your heads, Mr. Network Executives. Network TV that can only be watched on the big magic box in the living room is dead. You cannot force the same business model on the changed technology. You have to change your business model in order to survive in the modern technology world. Apple has a pretty good template for an adapted business model.
I remember reading this article in NYTimes last month. Is there any new information or is MDN just brining back last months news?
@Frank Yeah, MDN does this a lot. If it’s a slow news day they like to bring up old stuff they know people want to hear and make it sound like it’s new.
I actually read about this in TechCrunch back in the beginning of February. NYTimes was late on the story, but still not as late as MDN. http://techcrunch.com/2010/02/10/hulu-ipad/
@Stan.. C’mon, MDN is doing it’s part by recycling. No need to let old news go to waste and sit in a landfill somewhere.
Maybe we should call it MacDailyOLDs? (sorry, that was weak)
A paid app might work.
But a paid iPad subscription would NEVER work as long is it is free on your laptop!
It’s all in or nothing Hulu. Free or subscription, make up your mind, but it has to be the same across the board.
Doesn’t seem to be a problem for ABC?!
I would love to have a hulu application for iPad, but it would have to be either free or a one-time payment (or paid with ads) – subscription for hulu on iPad would be epic fail.
They can even integrate it with iAd. That should generate a revenue stream for them, and they can even still have video ads like they do on the laptop service. Subscription isn’t even necessary.
This NYT story is from three weeks ago. Has something happened in the interim?

@ Big Als MBP
Actually, many TV shows can *help* you to take a shit!
I wouldn’t mind Hulu doing what ABC is doing with their iPad APP – force the ads to be watched. There are only a handful of 30 sec ads imbedded in the ABC shows – it’s not that painful and well worth it to avoid a monthly subscription.
Wasn’t there an article last week about the success of the ABC APP? Something about millions of ad opportunities in the first week on the iPad …
“To get permission to move content onto other platforms ‘takes a lot of wrangling,’ said a Hulu employee who requested anonymity because the company did not authorize him to speak on behalf of the site.”
How about, rather than negotiating on a platform by platform basis, just negotiate, “Web Based Delivery”. Try to cover all bases so that you don’t have to keep going back every time a new device, OS, Application, comes out.
Of course, the Fat Cats in charge probably would wrinkle their nose at something as vague and open as “Web Based Delivery”. I’m sure they want to keep their content on a very tight leash. $$$
And I am a little confused, if Hulu is run by NBC, Walt Disney, and New Corp. Don’t they already own/control most of the content? Do they have to negotiate with themselves to see if they’re okay with they’re okay with them delivering content on a different platform? It sounds a little schizophrenic to me.
I don’t care much for Hulu anyway. I live outside the US so I can’t use it… it’s stupid…
