"Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd. said Thursday it signed an agreement with Apple Inc. to offer the popular iPhone in Hong Kong and Macau later this year. Terms of the deal were not released," The Associated Press reports.

It should be interesting to see where the stock goes from here. It will probably nose dive since all this great news is happening. I don't think I have ever seen a product so wanted by the whole damn world. There will be lines to buy the iPhone from New York to China. Simply amazing.

Those are going to be extremely long lines.

Apple has adjusted its business model to reflect the realities of the global market. But the key to Apple's change of strategy, is that they do not change their vision model. They will still enforce their pro consumer vision model, even with the business model radically changed.

Wait, Hong Kong IS in China right? We have China now and this is not incredibly huge news? The stock is down too.......go figure!

I'm in line right now to buy the new iPhone. After I get it I'll take a shower and then go straight to the bar to pick up on chicks.

Hong Kong and Macau are in China, but the telecom carrier in those cities are separate from that in the rest of China.

Apple is saving the big ones (China, Japan, South Korea, Russia) for last. Given today's announcement, I'd expect them next week, though it might not be announced until the WWDC keynote when Jobs can say "Boom."

Mac-5150: Are you on that line outside the 5th Avenue store? smile

May 29, 08 - 08:24 am Comment from: Geographer

Hong Kong and Macau are physically located near China, but they are separate. Hong Kong is a special business district and operates on its own. You need a Chinese visa to enter China that you do not need to enter Hong Kong. When you enter Macau, your passport is stamped as you leave Hong Kong and the same happens when you return. China is a different country really, but their is some gray area.

Does anyone have a running list of countries that have iPhone deals? MDN?

It would be interesting to see a map of countries covered.

May 29, 08 - 08:48 am Comment from: Blue Dream

I'd like to hear alot of "Booms" during the keynote. Boom=gotcha, take that, BaldyBalm, buy some AAPL, Michael Dell, what happened to the Apple death count?, can you say...long term return on investment?, etc., etc.

May 29, 08 - 08:54 am Comment from: ChrisM

@ Tom:

I'm sure you'll see a big 'ole map of all the countries in the Jobs keynote. This is really shaping up to be a huge keynote. Firmware 2.0, app store, probably some nice new apps to demo, enterprise solutions, iPhone 2.0 with 3G, GPS, video conferencing? Second only to MacWorld '07!

I can't even imagine if they also released a tablet and/or other iPhone models.... Apple fanboys will be fainting.

Oh, and to answer your question, yes.

May 29, 08 - 09:39 am Comment from: bioness

Thats a big deal, Hong Kong chinese population has about 4 digital cameras per person, and about 8-10 mobile phones per person.

They may already have the unlocked iPhone, but iPhone 2.0... it's going to be a big year.

Time to bring in the Apple Store in Hong Kong

May 29, 08 - 10:02 am Comment from: Macintosh

Wow, this list is growing and growing. 10 million units this year is going to be a piece of cake.

I've been to HK dozens of times, even bought an official Chinese version of the Apple OS 7 there. While HK is now part of China, it's still administered as a separate entity. It's a small, but good market, as tech is as concentrated there, as anywhere in the world. I'm sure the iPhone will do well in HK.

May 29, 08 - 07:50 pm Comment from: Michael Cheung

Wow, this is interesting! I thought they would have gone with Peoples Telecom, since its affiliated to China Mobile (The logos are all over the Peoples Telecom shops), and CM came very close to agreement. However, I'm glad to it hasn't come to that... Peoples reception is AWFUL! The only saving grace is that it has a HK$128/mth unlimited GPRS plan (Thats like US$16 or 9 GBP).
Once my 6mth contract ends, I think its time to upgrade to the new iPhone model! Woohoo!!!
