IBM to bring Lotus Notes email to Apple iPhone, iPod touch; Lotus Symphony for Mac
Thursday, January 17, 2008 - 11:11 AM EST

"E-mail software from IBM Corp. will be available on Apple Inc. iPhones and iPod Touch devices under a new partnership that brings together two big rivals of Microsoft Corp.," Brian Bergstein reports for The Associated Press.

"IBM plans a formal announcement of the Lotus Notes e-mail package for Apple's portable devices at its Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Fla., next week. The software, which requires use of IBM's Domino e-mail server program, will be free for users who already have a Lotus Web-access license and start at $39 per year for new users," Bergstein reports.

"IBM also plans to release Lotus Notes and the free Lotus Symphony 'productivity' package — which includes documents, spreadsheets and other Microsoft Office-like software — for Apple's Macintosh computers," Bergstein reports.

"With these moves, IBM is trying to find more avenues for its software and take advantage of Apple's natural affinity for Microsoft alternatives," Bergstein reports. "If IBM, which counts 135 million Lotus users worldwide, can get companies to let their employees check Lotus e-mail on iPhones, the partnership could make Apple's gadget more competitive with... business-targeted smart phones."

Bergstein reports, "IBM and Apple, competitors in the early years of the PC market, traditionally have not worked closely together but now appreciate that 'we have a lot in common,' IBM spokesman Mike Azzi said. 'We're going to cross-pollinate.'"

Full article here.

Thomas Ricker reports for Engadget, "The software is free for those with existing licenses which means IT is going to have a hell of a time keeping it out of users' hands. If true, the application would presumably be the first official, third-party app developed with Apple's new iPhone SDK."

Full article here.

Bill Ray reports for The Register, "iPhone users can already check email on Lotus systems using the web interface, but having a native client creates a much better user experience and features, such as push email, which are simply impossible using the Web Apps the iPhone currently supports.

Ray reports, "Apple will be launching the official iPhone SDK in February, but clearly it's not just games companies who have had early access to it. IBM expects their application to be ready in about a month, so it seems likely that Steve Jobs is planning to announce a range of applications to go with the SDK when it's launched."

Guys, Steve Jobs is just milking the Mac for what it worth but he knows that the PC war has ended years, years, years ago.

What he's doing right now is focusing on the future, the next best thing, which is the iPhone. This is what matters today. Tha's why corporations such as IBM are entering the bandwagon.

Wait for the SDK to be released and you'll see...

Jan 17, 08 - 11:24 am Comment from: Think

Ahh yes, just try to keep those iPhones from connecting to the corporate network you IT drones.

Jan 17, 08 - 11:26 am Comment from: Mac+

Apple lost the PC war but will be the leader of the wireless portable computing devices one.

Focussing on Mac market share is just distraction. The real power of Apple will be shown with the release of the SDK for iPhone.

"Steve Jobs is planning to announce a range of applications to go with the SDK when it's launched." - End of discussion

Could be cool but only if the Mac version is written in XCode and actually looks and feels modern. The Windows version is straight out of 1994.

Jan 17, 08 - 11:31 am Comment from: This Just In

Bye Bye Blackberry...

The entire Federal Government today runs on bberry devices via Lotus Notes.

This is HUGE!

c'mon MDN, this is a family site. I don't want my kids being exposed to discussions of IBM and Apple "cross-pollinating"!!!

Jan 17, 08 - 11:39 am Comment from: iDon't

IBM is one of best large corporations in the world.

Jan 17, 08 - 11:41 am Comment from: Tom Strong

That's a good kick in the nuts to Microsoft.

Jan 17, 08 - 11:49 am Comment from: Sixvodkas

@Tom Strong

That statement would only be true if Micro Soft had nuts.

Jan 17, 08 - 11:58 am Comment from: grok

IBM simply will not rest until the scourge of Lotus Notes - the most poorly-written and user-unfriendly app in the known universe - has infected every platform out there.

Jan 17, 08 - 12:00 pm Comment from: Mac+

The funny thing is that iPhone is soon to be a Microsoft-Office-Outlook-compatible product too. This thing will handle everything. No boundary.

I just got a craving for apple blueberry pie. Caution: Filling is hot.

What a pile! Wars never end until one side concedes defeat. Not only did Apple never give up they went on to produce the finest computers and OS on the market today. Apple has been hitting on all cylinders for at least the last six years and are finally starting to reap the benefits.

I predict that within the next two years, as the landslide in public opinion progresses, that even average folks will hang their heads a bit if they have to confess they still use Windows.

Lotus Notes for iPhone... oh joy.

Jan 17, 08 - 12:34 pm Comment from: LinuxGuyAndMacProdigalSon

This is a win/win/lose game for IBM/Apple/Microsoft. IBM provides a lot of services to corporations, particularly large ones. They should be able to influence Mac and iPhone growth inside the enterprise, perhaps even get some companies to switch entirely.

Jan 17, 08 - 12:34 pm Comment from: Scheduler

Notes is the one I've been waiting for!!! My whole corporation using it (and that's all they use)....

Now that it will be easy to do the question is - will IT allow it.

Jan 17, 08 - 12:36 pm Comment from: AL

The iPhone will never beat out the Blackberry in Gov't or in some businesses until Apple offer's an iPhone without a camera.

If Apple announces Lotus Notes on a NEW camera-less iPhone, Apple will not be able to keep them in stock.

Jan 17, 08 - 12:42 pm Comment from: MYoung

As a former CIO of a subsidiary of a global bank, I can say with certainty that having Lotus Notes Mail on the iPhone is huge, HUGE. Lotus Notes Mail is used exclusively by many large global corporations for its security relative to anything from M$. Frankly, I found Lotus Notes Mail awkward and distinctly non-user-friendly, but big corporations love it to death. It will become increasingly difficult for those same corporations to lock out the iPhone if IBM delivers.

C'mon, IBM! Bring back Improv!

Jan 17, 08 - 12:57 pm Comment from: R2

IBM.....friend?

Jan 17, 08 - 01:28 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

Is that a door I see opening into the Enterprise world? Why, it seems to be so. The iPhone toe-in-the-door might well open that door to some, then many, Macs following close behind. And here I've gone and retired! RATS!

you want lotus notes without a camera, get an iPod touch!

I'm LOVING these new apps so much. I can't wait for the SDK to be released. It's like having a brand new device!

Ugh... we're talking software that not only is ugly but ultimately is difficult to use.

Al said- "The iPhone will never beat out the Blackberry in Gov't or in some businesses until Apple offer's an iPhone without a camera."

Software can disable the iPhone Camera so there's no need to create a whole sep product without the camera.

Even if you consider the hardware cost, it makes more sense to just turn it off vs. manage an additional sku.

"Software can disable the iPhone Camera so there's no need to create a whole sep product without the camera."

Good point. But he said government. You can't throw common sense into that mix. The procurement officer will just tilt his head slightly and stare at you blankly as if you were speaking in tongues. If you persist, he'll get angry or possibly even begin to cry. At that point, he's just trying to figure out how to notify the security office of an intruder.

Jan 17, 08 - 09:01 pm Comment from: Tergenev

@steev,
That solution is a bit like telling the screeners at the airport, "No, I know that I have a 9mm weapon in my backpack, but it's ok. . . it has been specially modified so that it can't hold ammunition."

If it can be modified, it can be modified back. And that's a camera the guy is holding in front of a printout of all of YOUR social security numbers.

That being said . . .why, exactly, would Apple *want* to go after the government bureaucracy business?

Jan 18, 08 - 03:03 am Comment from: Daner

My company has 15000 employees and is part of a larger local governmental agency that uses Domino/Notes 7.

No, I don't like Notes, but none of the Smart Phones that we have tried so far work particularly well with it. We are running SE P1's and syncing via OneBridge. The Address Book and Calender work well enough (and allow me to iSync with my iMac at home), but the mail implementation leaves much to be desired. Any significant improvement would be welcomed with open arms, regardless of who it comes from. If it happens to be Apple, so much the better.

Jan 18, 08 - 09:41 am Comment from: HotinPlaya

I think there would be a great market for an iPhone without camera and iPod functions at a good price point, $199/249

I use my 4GB for phone/mail/internet , in that order, do not listen to music through ear pods, and the camera is a joke

of course I am an old fart, but there are lots of us!

my daughters both have 8GB , and want more memory,

Jan 18, 08 - 01:02 pm Comment from: sfemet

Our campus wants us to use Lotus. I had the misfortune of being the designated installer for Notes in my department. After three unsuccessful attempts, I had to create a folder for Notes to put it's stuff in (the Notes installer would not do this) and it finally installed.
Also, Safari is not a supported browser for Domino Web Access for Lotus Notes.
To add to the fun, when I use Firefox to access my mail, I routinely get an error message from the interface telling me Lotus can't process my request (when I'm not actually doing anything) and I can try and reload the page at my own risk.

This does not inspire confidence.
They better get their act together or this will be a nightmare.

Jan 18, 08 - 08:06 pm Comment from: IT Drone

And I can't wait to see the stories roll in that the fools who allowed the virus susceptible iPhone on their corporate email server got their email server infected by these fingerprint magnets!

Mar 08, 08 - 08:43 am Comment from: Shougn

If it can be modified, it can be modified back. And that's a camera the guy is holding in front of a printout of all of YOUR social security numbers.

LOL. The iPhone camera can't take a decent pic of text from close up or far away!

BTW, there are companies out there that will modify your iPhone to remove the camera. I recall reading something last June that said $100 for overnight postage both ways, camera removal and sealing up the hole in the shell.
