Icon Porn: Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard’s gorgeous icons
Saturday, September 05, 2009 - 10:34 AM EDT

"All the icons for folders and apps in Snow Leopard are now drawn in glorious 512 x 512 pixels. It’s a step toward making the operating system resolution independent, and perhaps also to make Snow Leopard a touchscreen friendly OS," Leander Kahney reports for Cult of Mac.

"But it’s also obviously done just for the art of it. These icons are real beauties. They are full of great details and little surprises. One icon contains the words to a song, visible only if you blow it up to its full size," Kahney reports.

Here are two samples to whet your appetite, Apple's icon for Automator (yes, that's an icon, folks) followed by Apple's rather humorous networking browsing icon for a Windows PC icon:

Kahney offers many more gorgeous examples in his full article here.

Icon porn indeed.
First, btw :D

Sep 05, 09 - 10:55 am Comment from: ABQ Peter

automator appears to look like that right now in 10.5 unless there are some details i don't see.

Sep 05, 09 - 10:58 am Comment from: Seanathan

I don't think they are saying the icon has changed. It has just gotten bigger. So there is just much more detail in the image, especially when blown up to this size.

Sep 05, 09 - 11:06 am Comment from: HMCIV

Nice enough I guess. But What I really want to see is the new MacWrite and MacDraw apps! grin

Sep 05, 09 - 11:11 am Comment from: CandTsmac

MacWrite MacDraw, lol

Would be funny if they were included in the new tablet as touch apps.

Lets face it. When it comes to a UI change, these apps were doing it from the beginning.

Sep 05, 09 - 11:11 am Comment from: enzos

"A fatal exception has occurred... The current application will be terminated" I'm laughing! Mac Easter eggs forever!

Sep 05, 09 - 11:34 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

I would be interested in knowing who actually created these icons. Maybe they should have signatures; they are little works of art.

Sep 05, 09 - 11:43 am Comment from: Goobi

All the default icons were drawn in 512x512 with Leopard. They're the same in Snow Leopard.

Sep 05, 09 - 11:46 am Comment from: Jubei

I would have changed the Windows icon to "Welcome to the POS World of Windows".

Sep 05, 09 - 11:46 am Comment from: Anonymous©

Lickable!

Sep 05, 09 - 11:55 am Comment from: the canuck

This is not new with Snow Leopard. Go ahead and copy the Automator icon from a Leopard installation and open it in preview. You will see it is exactly the same size as the icon in the article and that in fact it has not changed at all in detail or design.

Sep 05, 09 - 12:17 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

Gorgeous icons are for namby-pamby, artsy-fartsy MAC sissies who don't know how to use REAL computers. Is that what you MAC lemmings do all day—ogle big ass icons? On Windows we double-click on icons and get things done.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Sep 05, 09 - 12:40 pm Comment from: ecrabb

On Windows we double-click on icons and get things done.

Mmm Hmm.. Yeah, you get things done... Whenever you don't have driver installations or conflicts, malware, Windows Updates, and virus scans getting in the way.

For instance, I've never plugged in a USB memory key into my "MAC" and had a missing "USB Mass Storage" driver, only to try to install it... unsuccessfully. After wasting two hours trying to make it work, I gave up and re-installed Windows. POS bailing-wire-and-duct-tape Windows.

I wonder how many MILLIONS of hours have been wasted by people trying to make crap work on Windows... Unsuccessfully.

Sep 05, 09 - 02:24 pm Comment from: qka

It wasn't so big, but the Windows icon was the same back in Panther days.

(That was OS X 10.3 for you newbies)

Sep 05, 09 - 02:32 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

@ecrabb... ha HAH! another victim impaled by the rapier sharp wit of ZuneTang™!

Sorry, but who EVER displays icons at 512 pixels? Oh, wait, in the Finder we can't!

It's not that I don't LIKE big, gorgeous icons! (I ONLY import 512 pixel icons into CandyBar!)

But really, do ANY of you have any of your window view prefs set at 128 pixels?
Is there really ANYwhere where we can use 512 icons?

I didn't think so.

Nice icons, though!

Sep 05, 09 - 02:36 pm Comment from: BC Kelly

Folder Icon damn sure had me doing a double-take the other day

Changes as it collapses or expands - too kewl for skool

Now Zuney Zuney Zuney ...

Haven't seen ya much this week - you been out in the Snow playing with Kitty ?

Now, we're having a "Lemming Get Together" later today here at MDN, you're invited

We all gonna get artsy fartsy and ogle some big ass icons

But oh, sorry, you got to "get things done" ... Maybe another time, ok ? ... cool smile

I'd soooo love to have a job designing icons for Apple. What fun that would be!

Sep 05, 09 - 03:42 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@ John,

Especially if you made icons of hot naked women.

Sep 05, 09 - 03:50 pm Comment from: BC Kelly

Sir Gee Bee and John ...

Maybe you two should check with Evony

My Lord ... big surprise

Sep 05, 09 - 05:05 pm Comment from: Cubert

Goobi,
Nope. In Leopard they only go to 128 x 128.

Sep 05, 09 - 05:30 pm Comment from: ecrabb

@Mr. Reeee,

Nah, no victim status, here. I've been around MDN for a long time; I know the Zune Tang game. I just took the opportunity to vent about how much I hate Windows.

Sep 05, 09 - 06:55 pm Comment from: Mark S.

Windows icons look as if they were drawn with a felt tipped marker…in 1974.

Sep 05, 09 - 07:16 pm Comment from: matt

@ mark s.

you're not giving felt-tipped marker artists from '74 enough credit. i usually don't like to hop on windows hating bandwagons but the icons, even in vista/7, are "UUUUUUGLY".

Sep 05, 09 - 07:39 pm Comment from: pastrychef

Which icon contains the words of a song?

Sep 05, 09 - 08:35 pm Comment from: Jay

The Chumbawumba icon. It clearly says “I get knocked down/ I get up again/ You're never gonna keep me down/”

Sep 06, 09 - 12:14 am Comment from: lardlad

Man the Coda icon is sweet up close. You can see tiny hairs on the stem of the leaf.

I must say this is inspiring!

Sep 06, 09 - 12:41 am Comment from: the canuck

@Cubert

In Leopard they only displayed at 128x128 but they were in fact drawn at 512x512. The above article says "All the icons for folders and apps in Snow Leopard are now drawn in glorious 512 x 512 pixels" which implies this is something new. It is not. You can copy an icon from a default Leopard app and open it with preview to see what I'm talking about. They are drawn at 512x512 - this is not new.

Sep 06, 09 - 01:36 am Comment from: treestman

I made this comparison a few days ago:

"The file icons in Snow Leopard can be bigger than the original Mac’s screen. Consider that for a minute. This icon for the System folder in Snow Leopard is LARGER THAN THE ENTIRE SCREEN of the original line of Macs."

I have a shot of the original Mac's screen superimposed over a SL icon in the article here.

Sep 06, 09 - 10:54 am Comment from: ecrabb

@treestman,

As a user of the original Mac 128k, it's unbelievable to see a 512x512 icon with the old porthole 512x384 Mac screen superimposed. It's truly amazing what has happened in computing now that 25 years has passed! Lordy, I'm getting old!

Oh, and awesome blog! It's bookmarked!

Cheers!

Sep 06, 09 - 12:11 pm Comment from: Spark

@PastryChef
Oddly enough, the Keynote icon contains the song lyrics.

Sep 06, 09 - 12:20 pm Comment from: The_Steve

Why is Apple still messing around with bit-mapped icons at all? At this stage of the game they should all be vector graphics.

Sep 06, 09 - 07:43 pm Comment from: Finally

Resolution independence. Promised by Jobs years ago, not yet delivered. Let's hope Jobs' vision become reality before Vista 7 is released.

Sep 06, 09 - 09:17 pm Comment from: ecrabb

I don't know, guys... While resolution independence sounds cool, it would take a lot of CPU horsepower to drive it. Think about dozens (hundreds?) of icons on the screen all getting rendered on the fly. Preview (PDF) comes to mind. Let's just say "snappy" isn't the first thing I think of when I think about resolution independence. Besides, most of the icons on your drive represent content that's raster, not vector...

It takes long enough to display the Applications folder, now... I can't imagine if all that eye candy were vector-based and had to be rendered on the fly.

Talk to me in a few years down the road when even notebooks have 4 or 8 cores and have horsepower to burn. We're not there, yet.

For now, with the GPUs we have in even basic computers handle the giant scale icons with aplomb.

Sep 07, 09 - 03:49 pm Comment from: Jubei

Hey Zune Tongued, I tried to double click my Windows icons but all it does is play fart sounds from Ballmer. Help me.

Sep 08, 09 - 08:07 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

"While resolution independence sounds cool, it would take a lot of CPU horsepower to drive it. "

@ecrabb... That's what OpenCL (?) is all about. It harnesses the power of your Mac's GPU (video card) to render such things and other stuff like window transparency, the cool Dashboard water splash effect, etc..

Supposedly the rewritten Finder speeds up opening Finder windows quite a bit.

So, you Snow leopard users... does it?

I never do a xx.0 system upgrade. I always wait for xx.1.
I don't like beta testing my OS.

It's a bit like buying and wearing clothing that has manufacturers' logos plastered all over them....
they should PAY ME to advertise for them! NOT the other way around.
If visible logos are removable, I'll buy the stuff, otherwise no sale. tongue laugh
