IDC: Apple gains U.S. market share at double overall market rate, up to 4.5 percent for Q2 2005

“Global shipments of personal computers in the second quarter jumped a better-than-expected 16.6 per ent, paced by strong demand for low-cost systems, notebook computers and commercial PC replacements, market research firm IDC said… Overall, worldwide shipments of PCs rose to 46.6 million, up 16.6 percent from 39.9 million PCs in the year-ago second quarter, IDC said. IDC’s May forecast called for worldwide PC growth of 12.3 percent,” Reuters reports.

Dell was the largest PC vendor with global unit shipments increasing nearly 24% to 8.98 million, giving it a worldwide PC market share of 19.3%, up from 18.2% a year ago. Hewlett-Packard was #2 with unit growth of 16% to 7.25 million PCs shipped in the second quarter, putting the company’s worldwide PC market share at 15.6%. Leonovo was #3 PC maker after buying IBM’s PC business and ended the quarter with 7.6%, up from 2.4 per cent a year earlier.

In the US market, Gateway, which bought profitable rival eMachines a year ago, also gained share to 6.0% of the US market in the second quarter, from 5.3% year-over-year.

“Apple Computer also increased its share of the US PC market during the second quarter, rising to 4.5% from 3.7% a year ago, as global unit shipments rose more than 37%. IDC said that the Mac mini as well as its digital music business and the iPod digital music player have ‘clearly benefited the company’s PC business,'” Reuters reports. “Among individual PC companies, Apple Computer Inc.’s unit shipments in the second quarter rose at twice the rate of the overall market and gained market share in the United States.”

MacDailyNews Take: In January of this year, IDC VP Roger Kay said that he saw no evidence of an Apple iPod Halo Effect based on Apple’s desktop share. We took him to task for that statement as desktop share is a meaningless figure to use when looking for the iPod Halo Effect. Mac unit sales are what one needs to look at to see the effect taking place; those Mac unit sales were already on the rise in January. With Mac market share now on the increase – along with meaningful unit sales gains – perhaps even Kay can see iPod’s halo now?

  1. Fine. And now I want to see the accurate numbers quoted from now on when these idiotic anal-ysts talk about Apple. No more of this 2% crap, they love to throw around. It’s clear that current sales has them at 4.5% and the actual consumer installed base is at about 10% or so.

  2. What halo effect is that? The unprovable one?

    What about the Stores?

    What about style?

    What about Intel?

    What about Steve?

WHAT ABOUT THE STINKING MESS THAT IS WINDOWS?

Don’t be simplistic. Apple’s current success is based on a lot of things.

  3. I’ve got to agree with macnut222 and Huck who the hell is losing market share? It’d be good if we got the whole picture but then again maybe bad news is no news.

  4. And since you have to cut PC makers market share in half because they sell two PCs in the time someone has to buy one Mac, Apple is now firmly in the number three slot.

  5. “How can *everyone* gain market share?”

Keep in mind that there’s some confusing statistics in there. Dell, HP, and IBM/Lenovo sell world-wide. Their market share numbers are based on that. Gateway and Apple’s numbers are for the U.S. only. So Gateway may be gaining in the U.S. but dropping elsewhere.

“There are a whole bunch of everyone else’s who are losing market share.”

    Exactly.

Keep in mind that Dell is the market-share leader at 19% HP is second, with 15.6%. IBM/Lenovo is third with 7.6%. That adds up to 42.2%. Where’s the rest?

The answer is the “white box” dealers. Heck, there’s a little company on my way to work that builds custom PCs. They certainly don’t sell as many computers as Dell, but there are lots and lots and lots and lots of those little companies worldwide. While individually, they stand no chance of selling as many computers as Dell, collectively they beat it hands down.

So, in answer to originally stated question, the question of “who lost market share” is answered by one word: “Other.”

  6. “Apple gains U.S. market share at double overall market rate”

So we’re comparing Apple’s market share gain to the overall marketshare gain?

I’m going to guess that overall, the average marketshare gain HAS to be zero ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  10. You got hunters, shephards, ranchers, zookeepers…escaping back into
the wild just ain’t that easy. Where does Apple fit in? Maybe they’re

  11. Regarding GLOBAL market share for PCs,

    * Dell gained market share
    * HP lost market share slightly (global market grew 16.6%, HP grew 16%)
    * Lenovo gained market share big time
    * IBM lost all its market share

Based on the numbers in the Reuters article, we can’t tell at all how OTHER did. It may have gained, it may have lost. It all depends on how much market share IBM had in the ’04 quarter a year ago.

Apple’s GLOBAL market share for the ’05 quarter in question (I’m sure the timing is different, but we go with the numbers we have) is

    1.18M / 46.6M or 2.5%

That’s substantially better than the 1.8% or so Apple had in the world market. Since much of the world market consists of dirt cheap PCs with stolen Windows OSes (or Linux), this is not bad at all.
