InfoWorld: 9,000 people switch to Apple Mac every day (plus testing ‘Embrace and Extinguish’)
Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 10:56 AM EST

"By my calculations, based on Steve Jobs’ claim that half of all Macs are sold to first-time buyers, roughly 9,000 people switch to the Mac every day. They’re buying new iMacs, MacBooks, MacBook Pros and Mac Pros, most of which come in at sticker prices of $1,200 and up, plus add-ons. With OS X Leopard and iPhone hitting in June, I expect all hell and hallelujah to knock over those fence-sitting switchers. I’m looking forward to that," Tom Yager reports for InfoWorld.

Yager reports, "What makes the 9,000 number so impressive is the courage of the users switching from Windows. Let’s face it: Words such as 'friendly' and 'intuitive' don’t easily tip the scales against 'familiar' for professional users who have been running Windows their entire careers. It becomes ingrained that the only roles a platform’s core GUI needs to fulfill are authentication, program launching, and file management. It’s counterintuitive to many professional Windows users that system software should do anything more than that."

"I know someone who is of that very mind-set. She has used Windows since 3.0 and has never seen any reason to use anything else. Her computer, she says, is a tool, not a toy (jab); she needs neither a point-and-click nursemaid nor eye candy, and she’s too busy to see how that other half lives just for the sake of broadening her horizons. I can’t argue with any of that. These are the unmistakable words of a hardcore non-switcher," Yager reports.

Yager reports, "Nonetheless, I piqued her curiosity when she happened by while I was working a project that brought together the UNIX command line, X Window, Windows, OS X, and Mac application resources. I was running a two-headed Mac Pro, and she said that I made it all look so easy. That’s as much credit as she’s ever given a Mac. I saw in that an opportunity."

MacDailyNews Take: Embrace and extinguish tested once again. We look forward to finding out Yager's results, although, as you can see below, we already have a good idea of what will transpire.

About 3 million a year?

Feb 28, 07 - 11:05 am Comment from: Himmler

Ve vunce "converted" und processed about 3 million a year in my day, as vell.

Feb 28, 07 - 11:10 am Comment from: Investor

Look carefully.

There's a little tag there. "Article tools sponsored by HP"

I found that kinda ironic.

Feb 28, 07 - 11:11 am Comment from: not impressed

At 3 million a year it will take 100 years to have a very big impact. Speed it up Stevo!

Feb 28, 07 - 11:18 am Comment from: Fred Mertz

not impressed,

A user base of over 20 million that's growing 3 million per year can have quite a big impact.

Developers take note. We're here. Our numbers are growing. And we have money. Get coding.

"First time buyers" != "Switch to Mac"

This kind of growth is exponential, so in perhaps 10 years it the tables would be turned. but before that other systems will come to compete so don't waste you time in waiting. live on the moment

Feb 28, 07 - 11:21 am Comment from: Sally G.

But still of every 100 computers sold today ONLY 3-5 will be Apple computers.

Feb 28, 07 - 11:23 am Comment from: Eddie the one

@Fred M: "Developers take note. We're here. Our numbers are growing. And we have money. Get coding."

What is it you are wanting????

Feb 28, 07 - 11:24 am Comment from: Fred Mertz

Eddie the one,

I want it all, but I'll settle for AutoCAD first.

I doubt that this number is a constant. As mac switchers grow, the number should increase exponentically.

Feb 28, 07 - 11:47 am Comment from: SJR

According to IDC's latest numbers, in the US, Apple has about 10% of the notebook market and about 4-5% of the desktop market. We'll see what impact Leopard has on those numbers later this year.

This growth will not be linear.....but exponential...Once people see the Mac in operation they want one.

Here's my story...my wife's sister (medical student) first got one early last year a mackbook. Her boyfriend liked, so he got one later that year(2006). She came to our house over the holiday break Dec 2006.

The whole family had a lot of fun making pictures with photo booth, songs, playing some games and all...she showed us all the silly pictures her and class mates made...

My wife and I had a baby boy on Dec 28, 2006...we took a lot pictures...My wife 's sister edited the pictures on her MacBook and they looked great...so I put the new pics up on my Yahoo Photos account...and sent out an email to all my friends and family to take a look.

Lots of people replied, and wanted to know how those pics were made...I told them on the MacBook...the lots of questions started about Macs..

Early January...I decided to switch from windows and bought a MacBook Pro. Its a great platform for computer science majors...Now my wife and kids want one..so we are buying a Mac Mini in March when Leopard is released.

My Mom surprised me last week and bought an iMac from the Apple Store in St. Louis.

My Wife's Brother a Computer Engineer, is switching from Windows and buying a Mac also in March when Leopard comes out.

My comp. science advisor, bought A MacBook 6 months ago...Now has just bought a MacBook Pro last week. My Computer Science TA bought a MacBook last semester.

Many people in our department already have MacBooks or MacBook Pros.

It will be an exponential growth...as people show it off to others, many of them will want one.

Isn't it interesting that, every time David and Goliath duke it out, some people cheer for David and some people cheer for the giant!

Feb 28, 07 - 11:54 am Comment from: Macaday

Those 3 million switchers will each tell 10 people about their switch.

3 of those 10 will switch, making another 9 million.

Those 9 million switchers will each tell 10 people about their switch.

4 of those 10 will switch, making another 36 million.

Those 36 million will each tell 10 people about their switch.

5 of those 10 will switch, making another 180 million.

Those 180 million don't need to tell anyone because everone knows about it and is switching anyway....

Game over.

Go Apple!!

@impressed: "This kind of growth is exponential, so in perhaps 10 years it the tables would be turned. but before that other systems will come to compete so don't waste you time in waiting. live on the moment"

I hope you're right about the "...other systems will come to compete..." part, I really do hope you're right. Real multiple competitor OSes, not just hardware, need to come into play; This is the only way the end user is ever going to see where we could really be with personal computing - the one and only way.

No.. those are the unmistakable words of someone who is going to wake up one day and wonder what the hell happened because they self-blinded themself to the changes going on in the world around them.

MDN word: fear. Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

Himmler,
Very bad joke. Not funny (although, it is).

And yet that same woman probably dances half-naked, and drunk off her ass on top of the copier at the office holiday party.

THAT'S when you show her a Mac.

Microsoft is working from scratch on a Unix based OS to replace Windows.

It should be ready by 2020 +/- 2 years.

I can't wait.

No really, I can't.

Feb 28, 07 - 02:14 pm Comment from: klomp

I was writing tongue in cheek, Mr. Klump. My apologies, and thank you for the translation.

I was just pointing out that nobody at all seems to be converting from Mac to Windows, or if they are they are being very quiet about it. I think that fact is very significant in relation to the conversion question, which seems to be entirely a one way street. If this is true, and I think it probaby is, then Apple's market share is constrained only by consumer ignorance, which is a very big factor indeed that to me explains why more people have not already switched to Mac's OS X. Nevertheless, the outlook for the Apple shareholder has to be extremely positive, given the extremely positive trend in new users moving from the Microsoft markekt.

To-day I loaded Parallels' latest update and am truly impressed to see Explorer's icon in my dock, running in XP. Not that I actually need to use it, but it's fun to experiment.

Feb 28, 07 - 02:55 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

I've heard of few people who voluntarily switched from Mac OS to Windows, and I personally know two people who use both - at home, go figure... At least they're thinking different.

It will only take 91 years to convert the existing Windoze user base.

Feb 28, 07 - 05:49 pm Comment from: You're Easy

For the past 3 years, my daughter in Colorado had been a Windows person, using it for the internet and paying her bills online. For the same time, my son-in-laws brother would have to come over to clean out their system of all the Windows maladies since he is Windows tech and both she and her husband are computer not-so-literate.

2 weeks ago, her Sony finally died and I bought her a Macbook. She told this Windows tech about it and, to my surprise, he agreed that it would be a good thing, and that he wouldn't have to take the 1/2 hour trip anymore. When she got it, there were a few questions about setting it up on the internet and the included iLife programs. Since then she has set up a Myspace webpage, paid her bills and surfed with very little help from me or my other daughters who are also Mac users. The few problems she did encounter, she was able to get through using the Mac help.

This past week end was my mother-in-laws birthday, and being in NY we thought it would be nice for us to use iChat so that we could have them 'at' the birthday party. It took about a half an hour for me to talk her through the download and set up of an AIM account, go through the iChat and camera setup and link her up with my other daughters Macbook.

When it was time for the party, we put the Macbook behind the birthday cake. It was something to see: my 82 year old mother-in-law with her grandaugher, her 2 year old and 2 month old great grandaughters on the screen helping her blow out the candles.

I was told that my 2 year old granddaughter was REALLY upset when the computer was eventually turned off and she could'nt talk to 'great grammy' anymore.

Thanks Apple.

RE: "she said that I made it all look so easy"

The definition of a professional "anything" or "anyone" is someone who makes the nearly impossible look easy. To do that they need experience and professional level tools.

OSX is the best tool.

Amateurs have the need to make the easy look hard in order to "impress" you with how hard they are working, never knowing that working smart is what actually gets the job done.

Feb 28, 07 - 09:57 pm Comment from: Occasional Poster

I don't believe that all the Window's users will convert simply because of the $299/$399 or cheap discount computers even in the future. With that said, one thing that is missing is that Windows boxes will always show a double percentage of sales versus users, as the Win Boxes are usually replaced every other year on average while Macs run 5 to 7 year cycles at the least. This alone dictates "higher" percentages which are erroneously used by misguided statistics experts.

Mar 03, 07 - 08:08 am Comment from: RealWorld

"As mac switchers grow, the number should increase exponentically."

Intel processors and Windows compatibility are big reasons for a spike in Apple sales, but as Firefox and Linux show the curve is exponential, but it's not exponential growth. The new demand tapers off exponentially.

" was just pointing out that nobody at all seems to be converting from Mac to Windows, "

Except for the million plus Boot Camp users. Almost all the new Mac growth is from people running Windows on the platform.

"Win Boxes are usually replaced every other year on average while Macs run 5 to 7 year cycles at the least."

See how that holds up for you now that you're in the Intel world and new processors get released more than once every 5-7 years.

Do you really think most people will be using today's dual processor Core2 Duo Macs in 5-7 years when a brand new $399 Dell purchased 2 years from now will outperform it in every way?
