Innovative Microsoft launches mobile app site for Windows Mobile
Thursday, July 17, 2008 - 10:37 AM EDT

"Just days after the launch of Apple's App Store, Microsoft has put up a website that attempts to compete. I say 'attempts,' because the new portal, which is powered by Silverlight, looks very rushed," Emil Protalinski repots for Ars Technica.

"The site, dubbed 'Windows Mobile Applications' under the slogan 'DO MORE,' aims to promote most of the applications currently available for Windows Mobile (estimated to be something like 18,000)," Protalinski reports. "The problem is that Microsoft is trying a little too hard: it brought Mr. Flashy along for the ride, and left Mr. Usability behind."

Protalinski reports, "Microsoft is not taking a cut of sales for every Windows Mobile application, it is merely trying to offer a single site that users can use to explore and find new software. The trouble is users aren't going to be finding many applications without a search function. Instead, Microsoft has created a very-slow-moving carousel for looking through the applications."

Instead of "DO MORE" it should say "MORE DO-DO!"

Jul 17, 08 - 10:31 am Comment from: smyhre

Balmer just get the iPhone you know you want one wink

Jul 17, 08 - 10:31 am Comment from: BSOD

How can this even be a product if it requires Silverlight?

Jul 17, 08 - 10:35 am Comment from: therepguy

But will anyone show up?

I think not!

Jul 17, 08 - 10:35 am Comment from: anon

I love the take, MDN!

Jul 17, 08 - 10:36 am Comment from: ElderNorm

Just curious. HOW DOES one load Windows mobile apps on to a phone? My little motorola has not internet connection. I think I can connect it to a computer but I have never seen anything about adding software???

In fact, I have NEVER seen ads for adding software and functionality to ANY PHONE, EVER. (except the iPhone, of course)

Is it me or is the entire industry in catch up mode???

grin
Just a thought.

I tried do view the site but it says I need to download silverfish or limelight or something. So I clicked the download link and my company content filter blocked me.

Hmmmm... Why would an IT company block a Microsoft site? smirk

Jul 17, 08 - 10:38 am Comment from: Olternaut

A site with 18,000 crapware titles with a heavy "me too" feel to it. The zune phone couldn't be too far away then.
My first reaction is that all this is really kinda sad.

Jul 17, 08 - 10:40 am Comment from: Eric

MDN: Do I detect some sarcasm in your headline?

LOL!

Jul 17, 08 - 10:41 am Comment from: wings2Sky

Just looked at the site and Protalinski was right. There is no search field! To view the apps you have scroll through them on a ridiculously slow cover-flow-ish display.
The site has a green color scheme. Clearly green with envy!

Jul 17, 08 - 10:42 am Comment from: JAYGEE

Where does Microsoft get their ideas from? It just boggles the mind! wink

Jul 17, 08 - 10:43 am Comment from: @BSOD

READ the article, its not a product, its just a website with all 16000 apps for winmobile in one place with no way to search through it.

Jul 17, 08 - 10:44 am Comment from: jarrettdailynews

Hey, don't laugh to much at this pathetic attempt by Microshit. Wall street is loving it. Microdick is up $0.06 as of 20 minutes ago.

What a sad world that company in crackmond live in.

And if you live there, that is your choice so don't get mad that I lumped you in.

Apple reconsiders changing its corporate motto to reflect its new standards of quality and commitment:

Without Microsoft, we would never be any good.

Apple, we're not as a bad as Microsoft.

Apple less crappy that Microsoft.

Apple, the worse Microsoft is, the better we are.

Why improve? We've got the Microsoft correction factor.

Apple, our success is defined by Microsoft.

@ wings2sky, @BSOD, and TFA:

Apple's Forums (discussions.apple.com) no longer have a search function either. Rendering them...... oh yeah, COMPLETELY USELESS!

Jul 17, 08 - 10:53 am Comment from: Robnick

No Silverlight support for Safari on Windows. Guess I'll never get to see it. Oh well.

Jul 17, 08 - 10:57 am Comment from: Jamie

@PC Apologist, I was wondering where the f**k the search field had gone, damn  come on, put it back.

Jul 17, 08 - 10:59 am Comment from: DLMeyer

Another site I won't be using with my dumb-as-a-rock phone. Oh, wait. Folks with not-nearly-so-dumb phones can't use it either? Well, they can search through the site a few "apps" at a time. EN claims his phone doesn't understand loading 3rd-party apps ... maybe it isn't as smart as he thought? As he was told?
Yes, it was a rush job. Yes, it will have a search function in a "little while". Yes, we know who they are copying. And why. What we don't know is why they didn't start cobbling this together as soon as Apple announced their plan - many months ago. Duh!

Apple reconsiders changing its corporate motto to reflect its new standards of quality and commitment:

Microsoft, setting Apple's benchmarks of quality and commitment for years.

Apple, a little fruity and just a little better than Microsoft.

Jul 17, 08 - 11:02 am Comment from: Kirk

I tried to access it and I was also asked to download Silverlight. Funny thing is that I already have Silverlight installed on this machine. So I think I'll pass.

In the background, though, I did see something that looked like a search field. Maybe that's been added since the original article.

Jul 17, 08 - 11:03 am Comment from: mindpower

Er, actually M$ has had the Windows Mobile Catalogue site for a while. MDN, you're a bit lame acting like M$ is trying to play catch up with Apple here. Fanboyism confused

Jul 17, 08 - 11:03 am Comment from: Microsoft's service PRE-DATES the App Store

Hoo boy. This site has turned into such a blind zealot convention. If any of you actually bothered to follow the link instead of swallowing MDN's crappy "takes" you'd realize a number of things, chief among them that Microsoft's site actually existed BEFORE the App Store (Ars Technica has updated the story to reflect the correction), and that there is in fact a search box, which the writer of the article apologized for missing, and which is in fact clearly visible if any of you actually took the time out to look at the page.

And you all have the nerve to call Windows users lemmings. Jesus. MDN's forum used to be fun and interesting, but now it's turned to shit, with the editors bent on drumming up hits with inflammatory editorializing. Just summarize the fucking stories, and leave your childish "takes" out of it. You people have become the Paul Thurrott and John Dvorak of the Mac community, a bunch of cynical click-whores acting like low-rent carnival barkers just to lure the troglodytes.

Jul 17, 08 - 11:04 am Comment from: openvista

@PC Apologist:

The search function was taken down on July 11th, presumably to ease the load on Apple's overheating servers (iphone launch). Apple said the measure was temporary and will restore it soon. Whole truths are much better than half truths.

I'm waiting for the day that "7 of 9" takes over the helm of the BORG in Redmond, tosses Monkey Boy overboard, and gives the Keynote address dressed in her Spandex outfit.

Now that's a presentation I'd wait in line for a week to see!

Wow, the hostile pc user are out in force. A little troll here, a little troll there. Back in the day (say 2% marketshare) they would come to these sites and laugh at Apple. Now that success is really starting to stick to Apple they come in here pissed.

I am sorry your computer maker doesn't also build your Operating system. I am also sorry that your MP3 player maker doesn't build your computer.

The Company that make's all my products has a complete ecosystem. Yes, true, at times there are bumps, but in 10 years they have failed me not once. Each time I have had an issue, they have resolved it to my complete satisfaction. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I hope in the future that the company that builds your operating system will become your PC manufacture, MP3 maker and the company that supplies your phone. Microsoft has done such a stellar job on just software, I can only imagine the greatness they would show if the built the entire widget. Now that would be the true WOW!!!

Ha..... ha........haaaa

Jul 17, 08 - 11:19 am Comment from: DLMeyer

My apologies for a) believing that MS would copy an Apple concept and b) believing that the search function was actually missing, as reported by Ars Technica<b> and repeated by MDN. Usually such beliefs are not so totally wrong.
But ...
When were the forums "fun and interesting", as opposed to the current "shit"? When there were more trolls and flamers reveling in the lack of ID? When MDN was even MORE out of control? When most of the Apple "fans" here <b>were
whacked-out zealots? I don't THINK so.

I just found this on the internet somewhere.

This person writes:

" I was really getting a lot out of using VISTA, the usability is amazing, it's secure and fast too."

I know , I know, You don't believe he is telling the truth. I was skeptical too. Then a few sentences later the person goes on to say.

"Then I plugged my ZUNE into the system, that is when my mind was blown away. The way Microsoft just makes everything so seamless and intuitive."

I know, I know, now you are calling this bullshit. Trust me, I couldn't make this stuff up, simply because we all know the PC ecosystem just works. but it's this last part that got me.

"Plus, I plugged my Windows Mobile phone into the mix, download applications from one central location, surf the web in a great mobile browser it's an awesome experience."

That's where things got iffy as far as believing this person.

I swear, I wish my technology experience daily was on the Windows platform........ Yeah, sure I do. Thank you Apple.

Jul 17, 08 - 12:05 pm Comment from: j-j

What's amusing is that the Windows Mobile Platform is successful in the enterprise market (chiefly because it has been the only option here) but the carousel for viewing their Mobile apps only works with the Silverlight plugin for one's browser.

Guess what? Most employees at corporations and government orgs will need administrator rights to install the Silverlight application. We aren't gonna do that. Our IT departments will wonder what on EARTH we want to install Silverlight for as a legitimate application for work-related tasks. Most of us may never see the MS App store until/unless MS creates a more approachable portal.

One of my best Windows, Mac stories. My Dad has always chuckled at me using a Mac, mostly because he built me a system back in 1996, installed Windows 95 for me, got me an AOL account, so on and so fourth. So in time I actually started tinkering with it. Then by accident I am watching some news station on my Primestar cable box at like 3 am and there is this story of Steve Jobs returning to struggling Apple.
In elementary school we actually had a computer lab, all Apple II's and comm 64's. Our lab teacher told us about the two "Bobs" at Commodore and the two "Steves" at Apple.
So at 3 am I am paying attention, a few months later I bought a PowerMac 6500/75, 2 PCI slots, OS 8.

Onto now, a few weeks ago my Dad is over (He doesn't laugh much any more about my choice in platforms smile ) and he wants to check his AOL email. I said "okay, let's go outside" He says "Is AOL doing home delivery now" My Dad is pretty funny. I break out the iPhone, show him the browser, type AOL and hand him the iPhone.
He hands it back after a few minutes and says "I can't figure out how to use it" I laughed enough to make him and I both uncomfortable. He has use Windows for so long that a touch and do interface is to difficult. What the hell has this world come to.
So 10 seconds later thanks to my wifi I handed the iPhone back and he was scrolling in and out of his inbox. Once he was finished he handed me the iPhone and said "Nice cell phone". My reply, " It's actually not a cell phone, it's an iPhone" Clarity always paves the way for understanding, it's just too bad Windows users have never seen clarity from their platform.

Damn Ampar, that was quick. Did you google that, or Wiki???

Jul 17, 08 - 12:20 pm Comment from: @ElderNorm

First, don't expect much out of you Motorola Phone, unless it is a Q, which I doubt because you said it doesn't have internet connection. The apps install into the phone as easy as one would on your computer. The phone need to be RUNNING windows mobile as an OS. Apps are nothing new to me, I have been downloading them since 2003.

Get out of your Mac bubble. Apple is not catching up, they just take the same technology and make it easy to use so dumb people can use it.

Just a thought.

Jul 17, 08 - 12:28 pm Comment from: Dr Mcr

Looks like a great experience to me....

Go to a microsoft site to find an application.
Get directed to a manufacturer site to find in depth details about the application
Go to a 3rd party online store to purchase the application
Back to the manufacturer site for installation instructions
Back to Microsoft's site to download active-sync
Install active sync on PC
Install purchased application
Sync device with PC

Assuming everything works fine, I can't help but feel this is a little fragmented and convoluted in comparison to apples store.

I think the difference here is that Microsoft were first to do the obvious. Apple decided this wasn't good enough and cut the complexity for the consumer by launching an extension to an existing well known facility to perform all the above steps.

freddypig,

Things I really think are ironic:

Think? You have no clue of the definition of the word.

1. Idiots who come on here and scold posters for the way we post and what we say = but THEY don't have the guts or gumption to register as a poster to this site.

Pure and simple straw man argument - the last resort of of fanbois when logic and sanity escape them. Try harder, fanboi, even if it makes your head hurt.

2. Idiots who whine that we are now talking like Paul Thurrott and John Dvorak - in other words flaming Microsoft. It's ok to flame Apple, not ok to flame MS.

Perfect Apple fanboi doublespeak, perfect fanboi bias. Translation from cretinese to English, "It's acceptble to criticize Microsoft for absolutely anything, but complete heresy to find any fault with Apple."

3. People who gripe that something from Apple is not compatable with Microsofts 10 year old crappy web browser. Welcome to the club, it's been a way of life for most Mac users. Now you know how it feels.

Who wrote that comment, fanboi? Reference dates and times! If you can't, you prove that you're the idiot.
