Intuit: Quicken for Mac coming in February 2010
Thursday, July 09, 2009 - 02:14 PM EST

Scott Gulbransen, Sr. Manager of Public Relations/Communications with Intuit's Consumer Division, today announced the following via The Official Quicken Blog, verbatim:

Recent media and blogger coverage has led to some speculation that Quicken may not release a new Quicken desktop product for the Mac.

We’d like to clear the air: Intuit will release a new version of Quicken for the Mac platform in February 2010.

We know you’ve heard this before. In early 2008, we told you we’d release Quicken Financial Life for Mac later that year. 2008 came and went and we did not. At Macworld 2009, we told you it would be later this year.

But after speaking to customers at Macworld 2009, and opening our public beta of Quicken Financial Life for Mac to thousands of you, we learned the product was not doing what we – nor customers – wanted it to do.

We listened, and we learned.

Feedback from Mac customers led us to rethink our approach to developing Quicken for Mac. We went back to the drawing board and are making changes to everything from what the program does to how it looks. We spent extra time building a reconcile mode for the new register, a robust Windows-to-Mac transfer function for new Mac users (and existing customers running Quicken on a Windows virtual machine), and redesigned the experience to make it look and feel like a native Mac application should.

We understand our loyal Mac customers are disappointed that the product won’t be in stores until after the first of the year. For that, we apologize. We think taking our time to get it right will be well worth it and will make Mac customers even more excited when they use the new Quicken for Mac early next year.

You can go to Quicken.com beginning October 12, 2009 to pre-order Quicken for Mac. We’ll also continue to provide updates on our blog at www.quicken.com/blog.

Thanks for your patience and for being loyal Quicken for Mac customers.

Lazy programmers. Their pc versions always have more features then their mac versions.

Use to use quicken a lot, but not any more. I will wait and see and take a look when it comes out. But not holding my breath.

Better late than never

Jul 09, 09 - 01:25 pm Comment from: Dasgeek

Screw Intuit. Their Mac version of Quickin has had serious bugs since 2002 that have never been addressed. They keep pulling a Microsoft by promising a great product in just six months. They are just trying to stop people from moving to one of the many other products on Mac.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:26 pm Comment from: ericdano

They seriously are sucking. They should release an iPhone app that sync to the existing Quicken ASAP. Then they can work on this "new" version of Quicken. Quicken 2007 works just fine for what I want it to do. But NOT having something for the iPhone/iTouch is just business suicide.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:27 pm Comment from: Geo

Here's the early review: FAIL

Intuits F'd me over enough not to trust then ever again.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:28 pm Comment from: Spark

"loyal Quicken for Mac customers"

That may be going too far. But I still use Quicken 2006 for my checking account and online bill paying, so I hope they come through with a thoroughly revamped and updated version.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:30 pm Comment from: ron

Quicken chose their name incorrectly. It should be 'Slowen.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Gabriel

There are plenty of financial management apps out there now, which are more native to the Mac and are updated more frequently than Intuit seems to feel is necessary. Just off the top of my head: iBank, Prospects, iFinance, Cha-Ching (both desktop and iPhone), Squirrel… I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Stop listening to Intuit's vaporware promises.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:36 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

I've used Quicken for a decade. It's crummy software, but makes me feel like a MSFT user - it's just good enough to prevent me from changing.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:54 pm Comment from: Snow Leopard

Intuit should be renamed Untuit... or just twit.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Sublime

It's like getting back with your ex-girlfriend... This time it's gonna work.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Miss my Quadra 650

I still use Quicken 2007, though it is hurting for an update in a big way. It does the job, but I would NOT consider myself a "loyal Quicken for Mac customer."

It is, by far, the most UNlike Mac application I run on my Mac. Reminds me of the Word 6.0 disaster on my IIci on Mac OS 7! Look, smells and feels window-ishy.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:06 pm Comment from: Miss my Quadra 650

@Sublime

Brilliant Comment. Snorted Dr.Pepper. out my nose!

Jul 09, 09 - 02:06 pm Comment from: Ralph M

Here is the thing that gripes me: Bill Campbell, the chairman of Intuit, is a former Apple employee AND a current Apple board member. Steve needs to take him aside and beat the crap out of him, not just for the frustrations with Quicken, but the second-class stature of QuickBooks for Mac. There is really no excuse.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:08 pm Comment from: jltnol

BIG yawn.

LIke who even cares?

I just hate it when there is a different feature set for Mac's and PC's. Why can't Intuit do the SMART thing and make both versions identical with exactly the same feature set AND file structure? That way, it wouldn't matter what platform you were on, the file would just work.

The last version I bought was in 2005. Still works, I see no need to upgrade for feature bloat... not to mention that my bank's web site does a great job of keeping me informed.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:09 pm Comment from: dave

> It should be 'Slowen'.

Or maybe 'Reversen'...

Seriously, I don't see how Intuit could do more to actively dissuade people from using Apple's computers other than to put out a press release saying "Don't use Macs. They Suck.".

Jul 09, 09 - 02:14 pm Comment from: jackspratt

seriously, f*** these guys. Quicken's updates have been way overpriced for what amounts to mainly bug fixes, features have never been on par with the Windows version and support is seriously lacking at Intuit.

i'm evaluating iBank 3 right now and will very likely migrate to that software within the week, good riddance to Quicken.

f*** Intuit.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:15 pm Comment from: MrMcLargeHuge

Sorry Intuit, Squirrel now has my business and my money.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:17 pm Comment from: TowerTone

...or maybe 'Dickin', as that is what I feel I have gotten sometimes.
At least since I switched to a Mac.
Worst program I use, by far.
Waiting to see if the iBank iPhone app makes it worth the switch.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:30 pm Comment from: Uncle Al

Huh, I just looked to see what version I have, and it's not even in my Applications folder. It HAS been a long time since I fired that sucker up. Guess I don't really need it after all.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:47 pm Comment from: MikeK

Apple should develop a financial app to bundle with iWork.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:55 pm Comment from: Mike

I'm stuck with buggy versions of QuickBooks from five years ago, since reviews from newer versions sound even worse than what I've got. I feel I need to stick with QuickBooks since it's what my accountants use...

Does any other Mac product support file transfers with QuickBooks files for Windows?? If so, I'll be the first to switch!

Jul 09, 09 - 02:57 pm Comment from: SlickBooks

Quickbooks 2009 for Mac has been out over a year and they have STILL not yet released a fix for a bug in which it takes 20 to 90 seconds for a reaction to record after you hit Enter. In fact, I tested a beta fix for this *months* ago that did indeed work, and they haven't yet released it!

This company has treated Mac users as the unwanted love child of someone's third husband since its incarnation. They offer NO SUPPORT (except for their "web community" - i.e. fix it yourself). If the product does not work and has a bug you STILL have to pony up $80 per incident just to talk to a tech support person. The contempt/disdain is palpable. And they get away with it because there is no other accounting program on the Mac that you can switch to - MYOB's migration tool utterly fails on existing companies.

Bill Campbell, the CEO of Intuit, should be BOOTED from Apple's Board, and I have voted against him every single time it has come up on the proxy card for 10 years now. Why do we have this guy on Apple's board when his company writes buggy software and has NO customer service?

Jul 09, 09 - 02:58 pm Comment from: SAB

I use MoneyWell and it works far better than any Intuit product that I have ever used. I used to use Quicken at home, 1st for the PC, and then for the Mac, multiple versions on both platforms. None of them were good programs, they all had lots of bugs, and they were laid out in completely unintuitive ways. I use QuickBooks Pro at work, and it sucks, too. It should be called SlowBooks with a slogan like, "I'll probably work today, but maybe not 100%." I have been looking for a decent cross-platform, multi-user alternative to QuickBooks for some time that isn't outrageously expensive. Intuit can't even figure out how to make a multi-user version of QuickBooks for the Mac, let alone, one that can talk to QuickBooks for Winblows.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:59 pm Comment from: macaholic

Quicken 2004 at this end. Works fine, is older than all the Macs in the house. Well, the ones that are plugged in!

Jul 09, 09 - 03:02 pm Comment from: Jersey_Trader

I have been looking for years for a multi user version of QuickBooks for the Mac!

Compare QuickBooks Products

Intuit still ignores the Macs in the office. They are not serious about the Mac yet!!!

Jul 09, 09 - 03:10 pm Comment from: Jeff

Christ! Talk about a clusterf*ck. How long does it take to get a program out the door. And if they're missed the mark with requirements twice, has anyone's head rolled?

And look at Scott's line
Wants Quicken Mac: The new product will have all the features and functionality customers are telling us they want. Will it be exactly the same as Windows? No. Mac customers (our beta testers) have specific needs and wants and that’s how we’re building it.

That means it won't be feature rich. They probably think mac owners don't own stocks or have 401k accounts.

What a market that needs serious competition.

Jul 09, 09 - 03:32 pm Comment from: Gosh

I want Microsoft Money for Mac! I can ditch my VM then!

Jul 09, 09 - 03:46 pm Comment from: sabbett

even if it does eventually come out.. and work.. and is worth purchasing (lot of if's), are they still going to charge the financial institutions way too much money for thier end of the software? my bank currently only supports PC interaction because it's a small F.C.U. and cannot afford to pay the premium..

Jul 09, 09 - 03:52 pm Comment from: An Optimist

"The wait will be worth it." - That's what Microsoft said when Vista fell behind schedule.

Jul 09, 09 - 03:56 pm Comment from: alansky

More lies. Accounting software isn't rocket science!

Jul 09, 09 - 04:09 pm Comment from: GriffinFX

Intuit's Mac products suck. Plain and simple. Unless they make them on par with their Windows counterparts they will continue to be worthless.

mw: dead. As in Intuit is dead on the Mac and they just don't know it yet.

Jul 09, 09 - 04:29 pm Comment from: hairy buyer

Anybody who understands accounting should be happy with MultiLedger, a cross platform accounting package which just keeps getting better. There are no differences between the Windows and the Mac packages, as far as I can tell. Why bother with Quicken? There is a separate payroll accountng package, which bears the name "Canadian Payroll" in Canada. checkmark.com will tell you all you need to know. Checkmark doesn't try to sell you a new program every year, unlike some some companies.

Jul 09, 09 - 04:34 pm Comment from: Wings2sky

Use 2006. Does all I need (which isn't much). I was using 2004 and 2006 came on a Mac I bought. I haven't seen a reason to upgrade.
If it sync'd with my iPhone that might be worth it, But I think I will look at other apps. Recommendations for apps that sync with iPhone?

Jul 09, 09 - 04:49 pm Comment from: jackspratt

@Wings2sky: i know Cha-Ching has an iPhone app, but they still have a long way to go to catch up to the competition's features...they're only good for managing a handful of personal accounts.

iBank has an iPhone app that's currently held up in App Store review limbo.

Jul 09, 09 - 04:54 pm Comment from: Deus Ex Technica

Too little - too late.

I've started using http://www.mint.com. For straight-up transaction tagging and classification, I can't recommend it more highly.

I'll never go back to Quicken. Bleh.

Jul 09, 09 - 05:02 pm Comment from: newton*

Intuit is PATHETIC! We should just wait for another year?

Jul 09, 09 - 05:04 pm Comment from: Ferf Muckmeyer

Intuit has screwed Mac users for years with BOTH Quicken and Quickbooks. A new product offering for Quicken after what - 3 1/2 years? Financial Life's beta SUCKED, and now this announcement is so cryptic that who knows what features may be added (or more so, whacked).

Remember years ago when the iMac was bringing Apple back from the dead and Steve Jobs had to beg Intuit from dropping Mac support completely? And now Bill Campbell is an Apple board member? He should be ashamed to be sitting on his ass knowing how inferior his products are to their Windows counterparts. I've had to resort to Quickbooks for Windows under Boot Camp because of all the bugs in the Mac version!

And will Quicken have an iPhone app that will sync with the desktop software? It freaking better, because if competing smaller shops can do that, one has to wonder if we as Mac users should even support such a product.

Here's a note to Apple - build a fourth application in iWork that is so superior to Quicken in every way that we'll all forget about that piece of crap once and for all.

Jul 09, 09 - 05:10 pm Comment from: RC

By then the copy of Quicken 2006 I've been forced to use will be well over 4 years old! God, Intuit is such a freaking joke. Too bad there aren't any decent alternatives (I've tried em all and sorry but none cut the mustard unfortunately).

Jul 09, 09 - 05:27 pm Comment from: newton*

I just bought iBank 2 because I was tired of waiting for Intuit. I just wish iBank could directly import from financial firms like the large banks and fidelity :(

Anyone here tried iBank?

Jul 09, 09 - 05:28 pm Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

Waiting for Intuit to deliver Mac products is like waiting for Godot. And then, when they finally deliver a new/updated Mac product, it is a weakling compared to the Windows version.

The Mac version may look nice (and cover flow does kick ass for selecting report formats), but it is always missing some key features that are available on the Windows version.

Case in point, last year they come out with their much-anticipated new version of Quickbooks 2009 for the Mac. In most ways it is similar to the Windows version, EXCEPT:

- Not multi-user
- Can't run credit cards
- Payroll module sucks compared to Windows version

Intuit has no excuse for this except that they know they have no serious competition on the Mac and therefore people will buy whatever POS they sell for the Mac.

So, as a solution, I would like to see Jobs walk into the next Apple Board meeting with a baseball bat, kinda like the mafia boss at a meeting of the "families." Jobs could then start quizzing Bill Campbell about why he is f_cking with Mac users. Jobs could point over to Eric Schmidt and say:

See Schmidt there, he delivers equalivant software for the Mac, even if it takes him a couple months after a Windows release. So what the f_ck is your problem Billy Boy. Why can't you give my Mac users the same sh_t you give Windows users. I put you on my Board and this is how you treat me.

I think with a little bit of this type of persuasion, Intuit might see the light and give more attention to the Mac community. If not, Jobs will have to get another bat and re-paint the Board room.

Jul 09, 09 - 07:38 pm Comment from: Tetsuo29

I haven't used Quicken in nearly a year. The last version I used was 2007. I got so sick of the unfixed bugs that I started looking for alternatives. After trying jGnash (free), Cha-Ching (got in a bundle), and MoneyDance ($40), I finally settled on MoneyDance. I haven't looked back and I don't regret it for a minute. I feel so burned by Intuit at this point, that I don't think I'll ever go back to using their products.

Jul 09, 09 - 07:45 pm Comment from: Bubba Jones

After Quicken informed 2005 users they were stopping us from continuing to download our data we moved to MoneyDance.

I haven't a problem with Quicken not providing support for their older products. What pissed us off is up to the date they pulled the plug stopping folks from updating from the bank, stocks, etc. Quicken 2005 worked wonderfully for us. Called my bank they said it was Intuit not them.

Quicken's attitude was "oh-well just upgrade, D'uh". Everything worked wonderfully why should we upgrade; truly it was a money grab. Quicken and Intuit software won't ever be put on our network.

Jul 09, 09 - 09:06 pm Comment from: JadisOne

Wow. I had no idea this many folks were so passionate about Quicken.

I guess I am glad I never used it.

Jul 09, 09 - 09:43 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

@Sublime... you nearly killed me with that one!

I'm using a copy of Quicken 2007 I borrowed from a friend's iMac a couple years ago. I think I borrowed Q2005, too. Actually, I can't remember the last time I upgraded.

Are there decent alternatives that can fully import Quicken files? Thanks for tip Tetsuo! I'll give MoneyDance a shot.

Are you sure it's not MonkeyDance, like Steve Ballmer?

Jul 09, 09 - 11:55 pm Comment from: Gabriel

@ newton - I'm looking at iBank again right now. I almost bought it earlier this year, but went with Prospects instead, which I'm now regretting. (Prospects has fantastic potential, and I love all the real-time graphs - but there's no iPhone counterpart, and I'm a bit concerned about its long-term viability.)

iBank is definitely one of the top options out there at this time, very feature-rich and ready for real-world use. It sounds like approval of their iPhone app got slowed down by iPhone 3.0 related updates from other developers, as well as Apple folks taking vacation time the past couple weeks.

Once it's out, though, I think that's the direction I'm going in. I've looked more closely at Cha-Ching and Squirrel, and while they're on the right track they're still missing some crucial features (Squirrel: split transactions; Cha-Ching: ability to transfer money from one account to another). So unless something changes significantly, iBank is the way I'm going.

I'm waiting for Intuit to announce that they're planning to release an iPhone Quicken app sometime in 2011 - and when it arrives, it'll be an ugly eyesore with icons copied from the WinMo/Blackberry versions of the Quicken app (which naturally they worked on first). Oh, and of course the iPhone version will have fewer features, and will have great difficulty in synchronizing with the Mac version of Quicken (yet it'll work just fine with the Windows version).
