iOS 4.3 beta offers new Multi-Touch™ gestures, Xcode updated with AirPlay services for apps

Apple Online StoreVictor Agreda, Jr. reports for TUAW, “Well hello there, here’s something new. On Apple’s developer page for iOS 4.3 beta there’s this gem:”

Test Multi-Touch Gestures for iPad
This beta release contains a preview of new Multi-Touch gestures for iPad. You can use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen; swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar; and swipe left or right between apps. We are providing this preview before releasing them to the public to understand how these gestures work with your apps. Test them and give us your feedback on the Apple Developer Forums.

Agreda, Jr. reports, “A new version of Xcode (Preview 6 beta) was also released to support the beta iOS build and adds Airplay and Apple TV services (not apps on Apple TV — yet) for apps.”

  1. MORE GESTURES!!! FINALLY!

I’ve been distraught over Apple’s failure to expand the field of multi-touch gestures for the iPad. That big screen is beckoning for them.

The new gestures described sound like a great start. I wasn’t expecting anything in that realm until iOS 5 at the earliest.

And the switch on the side becomes user programmable, so we’ll have the orientation lock back where it belongs. Yay!

  2. I still don’t see apps coming to AppleTV. There’s just no good method for input, certainly not the remote that comes with it. And if you’re going to use your iPhone/iPod/iPad to interface, then you don’t need apps on AppleTV – just AirPlay for apps.

  3. The Apple TV with Airplay is fantastic, but I have to render a video shot on my iPhone 4 in iMovie or something before I can watch it on my Apple TV. I’d love to be able to shoot a video with the iPhone and then immediately AirPlay said video on the TV.

Anyone know if this is in iOS 4.3, or at least on the horizon?

  4. @manbearpig I don’t know this first hand, but from what I’ve read iOS 4.3 allows 3rd party apps to use airplay for videos (as well as embeded vids in Safari) and it also allows video from the camera roll to be played via Airplay
