iPhone 1.0 owners ready to camp out again for iPhone 3G
Thursday, June 26, 2008 - 12:09 PM EST

"Bradley Wilson was one of thousands who lined up to buy the iPhone the day it went on sale in June 2007. He's ready to camp out again next month when Apple Inc. starts selling a faster, cheaper model," Connie Guglielmo reports for Bloomberg.

"Early iPhone users, some of whom paid as much as $599 for the Web-surfing device, said they will be among the first to buy [Apple's new iPhone 3G starting at $199]," Guglielmo reports.

"'I'm stoked about the price drop and understand Apple's desire to get the iPhone into as many hands as possible,'' said Wilson of Alexandria, Virginia, a staffer at National Geographic. He says he may give his old model to the family member who begs the most," Guglielmo reports.

"'I would wager that half the installed base will upgrade,' said Glenn Edens, a computer analyst in Woodside, California, who bought one of the most expensive iPhone models a year ago. 'It's a pretty low-cost update for GPS and 3G,'" Guglielmo reports.

"'I will be the first in line for the new one,' said Carol Hannan, a freelance art director who bought her iPhone in New York a year ago. 'I love this phone. I love the Macintosh. I love Steve Jobs. They do it right,'" Guglielmo reports.

I love Apple...

Jun 26, 08 - 11:17 am Comment from: Yves01

Woohoo! first post.

Jun 26, 08 - 11:20 am Comment from: rahrens

I wasn't there for the first - contract with Verizon still had a year to go, but I'll be there Friday in two weeks! WooHoo!

Jun 26, 08 - 11:27 am Comment from: Lurker_PC

From the article, "I would pay the price I paid last year again if I had to do it over -- it's been worth every penny."

He very well may have to. I heard conflicting reports that the $199 / $299 price may only be available to those (in the US) who qualify. Some articles I've read indicate that current iPhone users (who purchased an iPhone before May 28th) are not eligible for the subsidized price.

Peace.

I'm sure lots of 1.0 owners will upgrade, but seriously, camp out again? Get real. Last time I waited until the next day... no lines.

Jun 26, 08 - 11:38 am Comment from: Jersey_Trader

No camping. I will just upgrade my iPhone in July. I may not be first, but I will get mine.

The bigger question is, what is the upgrade deal and who do I gift my first iPhone to?

Jun 26, 08 - 11:42 am Comment from: Joe

Im getting it ont he 11th but i dont think the lines will be that bad. They were only bad in hot spots last time aroudn anyway.

Jun 26, 08 - 11:42 am Comment from: Turbine

Just wait until the day or two after...

Seriously, are people so pathetic that they need it the absolute FIRST MOMENT it's available?

Jesus. Give me a break.

People without a life who live to spend their money on gadgets they don't need....how sad

Jun 26, 08 - 11:43 am Comment from: Predrag

If there is a special deal for iPhone owners, you'll probably have to give your first iPhone to AT&T (or Apple). Otherwise, if standard upgrade rules apply, you'll need to have 20 months of service completed (and regularly paid) before you can get a new subsidised phone.

They still seem to be silent on the question of iPhone upgrade rules (if any are ever going to show up).

Jun 26, 08 - 11:47 am Comment from: Jamie

I'll be getting my upgrade for FREE on July 11th thanks to o2 giving current users on £45 per month contracts a free upgrade.

And I don't have to queue, they're gonna post it to me.

I love my iPhone v1, I think I'm gonna pit it back in its box and put it away for 40 years...

It's the perfect fodder for "analyst"

If thousands line up they can criticize the Apple "faithful who think they are at a rock concert acting like groupies and wasting their lives away.

If they don't then they can criticize Apple for failing to generate the excitement of the original iPhone.

If you already have a contract with another carrier it shouldn't be too difficult to transfer it to someone else. Was easy for me. I have AllTel, with a family plan, 2 phones, an LG8600 and RAZR, 900 mins, free nights & weekends, etc. I put an ad in Craigslist and had half dozen calls the first day, but I had sold it even before the 1st person called (fiancee showed my ad to 10 people where she works and 2 people there wanted it.). I did agree to pay their 1st month minimum monthly bill of $75, but that's a far cry from the $400 AllTel wanted to break the contract.

Now on July 11 we plan to keep an eye out on the ATT store and if a line starts to form we're gonna jump in it.

Jun 26, 08 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Gregg Thurman

Count me in line. The new plan will actually be less than I am currently paying (1,350 min plan). That's because I broke down and installed a wired phone in my house. I now use less than 900 minutes with ATT. So for $199 I get 3G, GPS and a $70/month plan, and save $30/month from what I am currently paying.

Lurker_PC, "Some articles I've read indicate that current iPhone users (who purchased an iPhone before May 28th) are not eligible for the subsidized price."

This is incorrect, no articles indicated this. They actually indicated that especially iphone owners before May 28th will be allowed to upgrade to the iphone 3g with subsidized pricing, disregarding their current contract status. They just have to start a brand new 2 year contract for their iphone. This was made known a few days after the release of the iphone 3g.

Im just going to wait till christmas anyways to upgrade to the new iphone, cause i bet by then, they will have a 32gig. Give my brother my old phone or use it as backup or ipod touch...

Jun 26, 08 - 01:14 pm Comment from: Dreil

Count me in as well.

Jun 26, 08 - 01:57 pm Comment from: PC Apologist

The Apple site footnotes the $199 price with "Requires New 2-year Rate Plan."

AT&T;says the $199 is a subsidized price; not eligible unless you are a new customer or meet their normal "upgrade" criteria (21+ months into your existing contract.)

Gizmoo has the word from AT&T;

Jun 26, 08 - 01:58 pm Comment from: Ampar

"You are a troll or an idiot. Which is it?"

Lurker_PC is neither. Consider decaf and I'll bet you a whole bucket of slop there was a better way to explain your point.

Jun 26, 08 - 02:05 pm Comment from: PC Apologist

Correction - the AT&T;internal memo seems to indicate that iPhone EDGE users can upgrade, regardless of their contract:

"Note: When the 3G device launches, all active postpaid customers in good standing with a 2G iPhone will be eligible to receive the qualified upgrade pricing for a 3G device regardless of service tenure. (Customers that would not otherwise be eligible due to tenure will be made eligible at launch)."
