Because
a) iPhone isn't available in every country and won't work on any carrier network's that aren't authorized by Apple unless they're unlocked AND jailbroken
b) There are hundreds of cool programs that extend the functionality of the iPhone making it far more valuable than it is out of the box. Some people are willing to hack their iPhone to get access to them.

The official SDK will most likely mean (b) isn't necessary, but (a) will probably be an issue for years to come.

My Phone is great and keeps getting better.
I don't need have a hack screw up on me and Apple say "tough luck, you did it to yourself".
I'll stick to Apple certified software. Aside from which, the SDK's coming out in a month (or less?) anyway!

I've had my iPhone since November and still can be amazed by how simple and cool it is, even with out third party apps (for now hehe [removed]void(0); )

Maybe because they've been suddenly found. Or that no one has reported it (MDN doesn't do the actual interviewing or anything, they just look at other sites for the most part)

Perhaps we should all chip in to help them get released? The charges seem pretty phoney. The courts should screen the cases better, perhaps if they weren't such cell outs. We just need to dial up our efforts, though, and perhaps the judges will be singing a different iTune.

Well I can confirm that this JB 1.1.3 update works, however be warned if you have installed third party apps you will have to uninstall and then reinstall and some of them are NOT compatible with 1.1.3.

As for those who question why JB in the first place.

1) I do not like cell phone contracts on principle.

2) My credit rating after a disastrous divorce is not the best and I could not get a contract anyway for maybe another year or so.

3) I want local applications not only browser/web based ones.

4) I do a lot of travelling and often to many countries where it is much much cheaper to buy a local SIM than to 'roam' with my own UK carrier. With a JB'd iPhone I can just swap SIMs to suit my own convenience.

5) Every phone I have purchased in the last 7 years has been unlocked at purchase. I have been prepared to pay the higher price for a SIM Free phone just for he freedom of changing SIMs as and when it suited me and without regard to which country I was in or whether a contract was involved.

However, after all has been said and done I also know that if the only way I could have got an iPhone was to purchase under contract and accept the restrictions, then I would have done my damnedest to do so as the iPhone is as close to perfect as I ever expected.

I live in Guam. That's why I need a hacked phone. (software hack, not physical)

I live in Aus... that's why I'm still using an iPod mini and a nokia that I got from work
