iPhone battery not lasting through the day?  Juice it up!
Friday, July 03, 2009 - 02:09 PM EDT

"The new, high-octane iPhone 3GS is loaded with features that could light up your life -- but its battery isn't one of them," David Sarno reports for The Los Angeles Times.

"Buyers are finding that the device, introduced two weeks ago, has trouble making it through a workday without a rest stop at the electrical outlet. It's proving to be something of an Achilles' heel on Apple Inc.'s flagship device, more than 1 million of which were sold in the first weekend," Sarno reports.

"Even the company suggests on its website that users disable some of the phone's most vaunted features, including the faster 3G network itself, to keep it from shutting down during the day," Sarno reports.

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Same old, same old. We've found that our 3GS units uniformly get better battery life than our 3G units with 3.0. If your iPhone battery isn't making it through the day, then you're a heavy user who really should go get a case with an external battery built-in. This is what we use and recommend:

I find that with OS 3.0 on my iPhone 3G, I get better battery life now. I no longer have to charge my phone daily.

Jul 03, 09 - 02:14 pm Comment from: Wil

MDN:

Bullshit take. iPhones have been notoriously power hungry, especially with the 3.0 update. My phone can barely last the day after I play one hour of music for my workout. No movies, just phone, facebook and music. Your dismissive tone just highlights how unusually biased you are, My Nokia and Motorola would have lasted an extra day longer

Jul 03, 09 - 02:24 pm Comment from: Rev. Dr.

I sincerely hope that some one will invent some kind of way to make "electricity" available to every one, right in their homes and work places. That way, when some ones iPhone runs down they could some how tap in to it and not have to worry about it dying.

I know, I'm a dreamer. But wouldn't it be cool?

THIRD!! HAHAHAHA

I'm not a power user by any stretch, and since 3.0 I've found that my phone won't last through the day. On all the previous software it would last multiple days with the same usage. I hope the fix this in 3.1.

First post!!!!!!!! oh yeah I rock!!!!!!!!!!

Oh an I'm not the only one who's noticed this.

Jul 03, 09 - 02:30 pm Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

I've had my iPhone 3GS for two weeks now, and I am finding the batter life to be excellent, certainly much, much better than my two year-old 2G model.

This "news" story is little more than FUD.

achilles heal. Ha.

Jul 03, 09 - 02:38 pm Comment from: R2

I'd rather have a spare battery that could be switched out late afternoon, early evening.

Maybe the 4thGen iPhone will have a removable battery, then Apple can advertise it as a revolutionary new feature.

Jul 03, 09 - 02:51 pm Comment from: Wyseguy

I've had plenty of phones before the iPhone came out that had removable batteries. It didn't help. Most of the time, the only way to charge the extra batteries was in the phone itself. It was such a hassle, I ended up carrying around a bunch of extra dead batteries. It was a waste of money.

If I'm on a long conference call in my car or at my desk, I just plug my phone in. It works for me. YMMV, of course.

Jul 03, 09 - 02:58 pm Comment from: pr

I have a mophie juice pack and while it's a fine device from a power standpoint...it looks like hell a few weeks after you buy it and they glued on two rubber strips to the side of it that come loose (the glue literally melts) quite quickly. It's actually a completely brainless design. The device works...it's just not well designed.

Jul 03, 09 - 03:02 pm Comment from: dave

Yeah, the battery sleeves seem like a much better design than this kind of battery that just hangs off the iPod connector.

These devices will put a large amount of force on the connector if you try to do anything with your iPod/iPhone other than just let it lie on a table recharging. And if your iPod connector breaks, you pretty much have to throw away your iPod/iPhone...

Jul 03, 09 - 03:08 pm Comment from: Dave

I'm going through a complete drain and recharge to try and calibrate this thing to see if I can make the battery last longer. Yes, I played with it a lot on the first day, but on the other hand, I only made one single phone call! I'm disappointed. I know my old phone wasn't "smart," but I could go for days without a recharge.

Also, you forgot that the 3GS battery is 15% smaller than the one in the original iPhone. Yes, the battery is lamer.

Jul 03, 09 - 03:14 pm Comment from: ROFLCOPTER

MDN, how can you possibly justify ruining the beautiful design with a giant external battery pack? Shame on you. The battery is inadequate, and you know it.

Jul 03, 09 - 03:20 pm Comment from: Not Bill

Remember that they did not allow ther first iPhone to be 3G because the chip draws a lot of power and drains the battery quickly. A better 3G chip was developed and included in the 3G phone. Still, you can drain the battery pretty quickly using the 3G connection for talk or data (surfing).

I imagine Apple is working on an even more power efficient chip. To compare the iPhone battery life to a phone that does not use 3G to access data, or is not use much to do so because it is too cumbersome, is unfair.

Any phone doing what the iPhone does would have the same battery life problems. It is the state of the technology at this point in time.

Jul 03, 09 - 03:21 pm Comment from: barnacle999

I noticed greater battery consumption after just a few hours with my 3GS. I'm constantly charging it. I'd say my old 3G had about 30% better battery life than the 3GS.

Jul 03, 09 - 03:25 pm Comment from: MizuInOz

I am like pr in that I have the mophie juice pack - AND the juice pack air.

I had the same problems with the glued rubber strips on the side and once I cleaned all of the goop from the indentations, I was and am OK with it. What I have noticed is that my 3GS lasts much longer with either the original juice pack or the air.

What I have also noticed is that I get a better signal capture from the original mophie than the latest iteration.

but when I am out and about, I prefer the "air" because I can control the charging process. The "air" has a switch which allows you to not be on constant charge. When your 3GS (or 3G) drops into the "I need to be feed" range on your battery meter, you flip the itty bitty switch and it recharges your phone. Really a good innovation. Much better for your internal battery on the iPhone.

As for battery life without an external power add-on, my 3GS gets much better battery life. Hands down.

I use my "old" 3G as a second number and can see the difference in stand-by time. I am also using my 3GS more - which I thought was impossible!

There are a couple things I would like to see and I am sure that they will be updated when they are up to APPL standards.

I think about all the naysayers and when I bought the original iPod and how it was a flash in the pan product. "Apple should stick to building computers", pundits would say.

Hmmmm... not much of that being said any more.

So, I am sure many anal-ists will have (if nt already) serious foot in mouth disease which will prevent than from becoming another iCal fail in the great prediction calendar in the sky. er... cloud.

Cheers from Downunder.

And - Oh by the way, all you Yanks, Happy 4th of July. don't you wish you till had all of your freedoms?

wink

Jul 03, 09 - 03:39 pm Comment from: judy

I hear Apple and Nike are working on a in shoe insert that when compressed when a foot receives pressure down, will, via a small USB cable ran up your leg, charge up your iPhone/iPod Touch as you walk.

The problem is the test subjects keep walking unnaturally and in circles.

More when I hear further. wink

Jul 03, 09 - 03:47 pm Comment from: Ashami

My 3G easily lasts all day and only goes under when I use intensive functions a lot, like GPS. But texting, phoning, and emailing work all day.

Jul 03, 09 - 03:48 pm Comment from: max walker

I too have work colleague who has trouble with the 3G lasting a day on 3.0 where before it went several days. It also appears to run considerably hotter since the update.

I'm getting just one day of use on my 3GS. I've been reading alot on the Kindle app, so I assume keeping the screen lit up is not helping. I've turned down the brightness and switched to white text on black, turned off notifications, wifi while at work and set email to fetch every hour. It's better, but still much less than I was getting on the original iPhone. That one was having to be charged daily and Apple sent me a new one that doubled the battery life. I'll be calling them after the weekend just in case.

Jul 03, 09 - 05:10 pm Comment from: Dirty Pierre le Punk

Apple allows you to decide what happens when you give two quick clicks on the home button: either address book access or iPod access. They should allow you the choice of a third option: wifi and 3G off or on. This quick short cut would let you save oodles of battery power.

Jul 03, 09 - 05:17 pm Comment from: NeverFade

I agree with rickp. I just bought my first ever iPhone, which is the 3GS, and I love it. The battery, however, sucks. Sucks the life right out of it. I've done things to turn off the power, like turning off location, gps, wifi search and the like. It runs for one day - then I must charge, cause I'm not going to get any more life... too bad.

I was coming off of a phone - just a regular phone, not a smart one - that I wouldn't have to charge for 3 days. I knew going into an iPhone purchase that I would not get that, but I was hoping for longer than what I get.

Jul 03, 09 - 05:21 pm Comment from: Jesus

it's because people actually use the damn thing.

Jul 03, 09 - 06:09 pm Comment from: DreamTheEndless

I skipped the 3g but I bought the first gen on the first day and the 3gs on the first day. My two year old 8gb first gen got much better battery life than my brand new 3gs.

Jul 03, 09 - 07:57 pm Comment from: silverhawk

It's funny reading some of the above. Certain non-registered submitters talk about poor battery life on a "phone" but never state they are iPhone owners. Are they professional fudster's whose moral code doesn't allow them to totally lie?

Jesus is absolutely right.

Jul 03, 09 - 08:46 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Pierre
I've been hoping for a programmable shortcut selection on the home screen (or wherever) since I got my 1st gen two years ago.

One tap would toggle on/off any choice of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and/or 3G, or you could have a 'shortcut' for each.

At least have one 'power saver' screen with all the buttons to choose from together.

Jul 04, 09 - 12:50 am Comment from: JKPinPDX

DO NOT use the 'incase' brand of extended batterypack/case units for the 3G/3GS. It KILLS your reception. Flat out JUNK! I thought it was my phone (had it replaced twice at my apple store) and then they said it could be the SIM card (had it replaced at my AT&T;store) come to find out it was my incase batt/pack! Just a heads up. I will try out the Mophie-Juice Pak and see if we get better results.

Jul 04, 09 - 01:21 am Comment from: Mac Daddy

That article is bullshit. I've found battery life to be just fine. And they have these things called car chargers, ferchrissakes.

Jul 04, 09 - 03:14 am Comment from: ecrabb

I just switched from the original iPhone. Battery life on the original was easily double what I'm getting out of my new 3Gs... And that's with 3G and push turned off. I used to go two days without recharging, and now I'm coasting in on fumes at the end of day one if I use 3G at all.

I'll definitely have to grab a 12v cord for the car and another dock cable for the office to use all the 3Gs goodies with any frequency.

Jul 04, 09 - 07:13 am Comment from: Dave H

If you're a heavy user charge your iPhone from mains electricity rather than USB. It lasts longer.

Jul 04, 09 - 11:26 am Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

@ecrabb,

If what you describe is actually the truth, then I suggest you contact Apple about the situation. My 3GS's battery life easily doubles that of my two-year-old 2G model when using them in the same manner.

How many of you have a laptop that would last all day? Get over it. Reading bookson your phone and wondering why the battery doesn't last longer? Stop comparing it to "other phones" and start comparing it to other handhelds in its class. Oh wait, there are any handhelds in it's class!

Yes, and have a revolutionary new larger case to enclose the battery compartment.

Idiots! They're coming out of the woodwork! Quick, run for cover!

Jul 05, 09 - 07:29 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

Mine lasts all day, and I'm constantly using it. It's rapidly become my primary e-mail device, even when I'm sitting in front of my computer. I hear the beep, I check the iPhone.

My guess is few people actually read what Apple suggests on their website, most importantly to at least let the thing completely discharge once, then recharge it.
