iPhone Dev Team preps free unlocking tool for Apple iPhone 3G
Wednesday, July 16, 2008 - 08:39 AM EDT

"As previously revealed, the iPhone Dev Team have managed to jailbreak the iPhone 3G, and are now applying the final touches to a free unlocking tool," Jonny Evans reports or Macworld UK.

"The team's iPhone PWNAGE application is being updated to enable those who want to to unlock their iPhone, this can be in order to use the device on non-approved carrier networks (including pay-as-you-go networks) and/or in order to install non-approved third party applications on the Apple mobile," Evans reports.

"The iPhone Dev Team last night published a video on the team development blog which showed the world's first jailbroken iPhone 3G, running software installed by the team," Evans reports.

some people have way too much time on their hands.

All I want on my iP is Terminal

Jul 16, 08 - 08:52 am Comment from: bjh

I doubt if Apple will care too much, now. They get their cash up front...And AT&T;have you paying on a contract, too...

Jul 16, 08 - 08:57 am Comment from: silverwarloc

If you have to activate at time of purchase, what need is there for a jailbroken phone?

Jul 16, 08 - 09:34 am Comment from: iPhone 2G

Don't forget that there are millions of unlocked 2G iPhones waiting to be upgraded to 2.0 firmware and unlocked. Those are guinea pigs then they head to unlocking iPhone 3G, just making sure it's stable enough they worked on 2G first.

If you waited in line for your iPhone 3G, then you have these little rat bastards to thank for it. If not for frigtards like the self-important iPhone Dev Team, we would have been able to quickly buy our phones in the store or online, and activate them at home. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! These idiots know better. They just have to hack everything. I REALLY enjoyed standing in line for four hours, and then going through another hour of getting through the in-store activation nightmare, and all because of these buttheads. Thanks for nothing, frigtards!

Jul 16, 08 - 09:38 am Comment from: HotinPlaya

The ones who need this, is all of us 1st generation jail broken running 1.1.4 and want to update to 2.0

Jul 16, 08 - 09:58 am Comment from: John

No sense to jail break the 3G since you are going to pay for an AT&T;account no matter what. Makes no sense to go with another carrier and pay twice. Must be for first Generation iPhones only.
Otherwise there are some really stupid people out there.

Jul 16, 08 - 10:09 am Comment from: Sam

John,

It will soon be possible to buy a "no commitment" iphone 3g from AT&T;for full price so the utility is not just meant for 1st gen units. People who are on a tmobile contract may be interested in unlocking a new phone using this option.

Jul 16, 08 - 10:12 am Comment from: Xavier

I think that the use for this is when you travel to another country, and you can pay a local pay-as-you go carrier, so your calls in the other country will be at the local rate, not INTERNATIONAL (much higher cost)

And yes, for installing whatever application you may want to install that doesnt appear con the AppStore

Jul 16, 08 - 10:23 am Comment from: @ Sawed-off 12-gauge pump action

Your an idiot... What the hell does Dev Team breaking the 3G have to do with standing in line? The reason you stood in line for four hours is because ATT and Apple wanted you to. "Gee, look how GREAT our phone is. These loosers are waiting in line for one.." It is an advertising ploy. You fell for it. I am greatful for guys likie Dev Team. Because Apple put restrictions on developers as to how they can make software for iPhone. Broken iPhone developers have no restrictions. Apple will never allow programs like Customize or vWallpaper on their App Store. Shame sence customers would eat it up.. So you are the frigtard!!

Jul 16, 08 - 10:29 am Comment from: Pram

@ John
Stupidity is the result of a combination of short view and no traveling experience . Unlocking iPhones is very usefull when traveling abroad. Because it's much less costly when using local GSM SIM card instead of roaming...

Jul 16, 08 - 10:57 am Comment from: hairy buyer

In Belgium the government legislation requires the option of buying outright, so to take advantage of this one will be able to buy a 3G phone on eBay once there are enough phones sold in Belgium to supply the market. Of course, Apple will probably want to ration phones sold in Belgium to counter this capability, as it undercuts its arrangements with Rogers, AT&T;, etc. Or it can simply increase the selling price sufficiently to remove the financial advantage.
Am I wrong?

Jul 16, 08 - 11:01 am Comment from: jg2000

now you know why apple is so hesitant to open up to third party developers, they're evil.

Jul 16, 08 - 11:03 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

@@ Sawed: The Dev Team has everything to do with it. If the grey market for iPhones didn't represent as much as 33% of all iPhones sold then iPhone 3G buyers would've walked in and walked out on Friday and activated at home.

Instead people have to suffer with in-store activation to ensure that buyers sign up for their long-term contracts.

Jul 16, 08 - 11:48 am Comment from: @anyone who waited in a long line

no one made anyone stand in a long line. You choose to stand in line in order to be one of the first to purchase new technology in the first few days. Anyone who stands in a long line then complains about said line by trying to blame developers for the long line when in truth the line is created by demand of the consumer....and no demand was not driven up by the fact that in store activation is now required.....that only made the line take longer to move through...the line would still be long by demand not for having the in store activation. look for another scapegoat suckas.

Sawed,

Your heart is in the right place but your business sense and understanding of the laws of supply and demand is holding your true potential way back.

Use your energy for the positive and you'll be a much more tolerant individual

Yeah, but mostly a good evil like Hellboy.

Can a hacked iPhone still access the App Store?

Jul 16, 08 - 01:45 pm Comment from: opie

I still can't get over the fact that Apple would limit the sale of its phones by chaining it to a company such as AT&T;. Maybe it is just a sense of stupid that grabbed the folks in charge at Apple but I will not purchase a iPhone until they are open to all networks. I know that I am not alone in this. I don't care about the 3G network or the government knowing where I am at any given moment with gps built in. The fact that you limit me in the market place to AT&T;will keep me away though.

I loved my jailbroken 1 gen Iphone, and can't wait to get all the GREAT third party apps that I actuallly use, like the video recorder and camera with a zoom, that I actually got for FREE!! Thanks Dev Team and Community Sources!!!

Just give us the option of buying an unlocked phone.
so what if I cannot get visual voicemail.

ALLOW ME the option of that choice.

Please.

Jul 17, 08 - 06:24 am Comment from: Lord Fontleroy

I am one very much FOR this. Having just upgraded my Gen 1 iPhone to v.2 software, I miss MMS (UK o2 activated service using SwirlyMMS), being able to forward a TXT (iSMS) and a Terminal App. Not to mention AFPd and Insomnia (ohhh, and iDope for fun;-). These things I would pay for on the new store but they are not available. As a non programmer, I'm not sure if they are not available due to Apple's restrictions on what you can do with the SDK or if they will in time!?!? Anyone??
Either way you look at it, there are going to be a limited amount of people jail-breaking their spangly new iPhones and certainly not enough to worry Apple I would think. Even if they did, Apple I doubt is going to worry about it - more I would think is pressure from Network Operators if people unlock their phones to put them onto other networks. Still, I think this is going to be a reasonably limited number and those type of people are going to do it regardless of any reason why not. I would suggest this culls the amount to a few percent at best. Is this worth any time from Apple/Net-Op other than building in to the next update a block for un-locked phones and this is really to deter the the other 5% that might. Just a thought...

Jul 17, 08 - 10:58 am Comment from: Adam

Jailbreaking is only half a hack. According to the Dev team's blog, their tool will not unlock the 3G device so it can be used on networks other than At&T;. :(
