Dude I just want an IMac update already. Luckily the IPhone has taken my mind off wanting a new desktop for a little while.

Sure. I earn enough $ to buy an iPhone every day. There are millions of people who make more than that. Quit being a loser, get off your ass and make some money.

This time, the halo effect will penetrate big business to a greater degree. iPhone isn't perfect for all business yet, but updates should take care of that.

I wonder... If they're going to start putting multi-touch screens on portable computers it would begin to make a lot of sense that they'd also design a tablet type device to go with it, or at least a laptop where the screen can be rotated 180 degrees and laid flat on the bottom half of the computer.

And when that happens, I picture Enderle curled up in a ball in the corner of his office, on the floor, still in his pajamas and sobbing quietly to himself for days at a time muttering "doomed" over and over.

People have got to begin to realize that the iPod was not a fluke, but a typical effort from Apple. The iPhone just adds that much more proof that people have been living with less than they could or should settle for.

If you compare the iPhone vs. smartphones... they're really NOT comparable... the iPhone is actually a pretty good deal for what you get. Even AT&T;'s monthly plans are pretty good.

FOUR devices in one! Vs. 2 or 3 in the others.
Phone, PDA, iPod and internet device. How many of the others have Wi-Fi?

As a music player, the iPod can't be beat. Between the ITS Aa nd the iPod accessory ecosystem, choices are vast. The Treo, Blackerry, Sony Ericsson and Nokia devices can't make such claims.

Uh, considering most people use credit cards (or other interest based schemes) on large purchases like computers, why wouldn't they? Just because everybody doesn't have the cash to pay for it all up front doesn't mean they are shut out... The same can be said for the iPhone. I'd wager that a significant percentage of the people (the ones who weren't smart by saving up in advance) who bought the iPhone didn't have ability to pay for the whole thing up front and opted to put it on plastic and pay it out over a couple of months at a premium.

Obviously Mac sales won't benefit from existing Mac users buying iPhones, but what about windoze iPHone buyers? I'm sure Apple knows how many iPhone activations were with Mac iTunes vs windoze iTunes, but is there any way for mere mortals to get those numbers?

Why in the world would you want a touch screen on a laptop or desktop computer?

It would be very tiring to use for more than a short while and you would very quickly revert back to using a mouse or trackpad.

The touch screen is an obvious input solution for the iphone or for a display in a kiosk or applications such as that but to use it routinely on your computer is an extremely dumb idea!

I've always wanted an iPod, but I've never bought one. I've never owned a cellphone either. (Think of all the money I've saved.) This could be the one for me, once they sell this product in Canada.

It's amazing that product that's been out for less than one week can be said to have a "halo effect." Another first for iPhone...

I'm with ken1w in wondering at the supposed "Halo Effect" of a device nobody outside of Apple has seriously explored yet. OK, there are hundreds of thousands of thrilled users. Will they be quite so thrilled by the time Leopard ships? There will be maybe four million more of them, but will they all be pleased pink?
I expect so. Except, perhaps, those who have heard the rumors of iPhone v 2.0 I expect there will be a positive Halo Effect on Mac sales, and that it will glow over into the Enterprise. It's just a little early to be commenting on it.

As I posted on Saturday (one day after iDay), I saw 3 people in the King of Prussia Apple Store who bought an iPhone on Friday and were back on Saturday to buy a Mac because of how impressed they were with the iPhone.

The beautiful thing about the halo effect for Apple is that once people start accepting that Macs might be better than what they've been using, they'll start using Macs and conclude that they are in fact better. There's no going back after that!

OS X's desktop metaphore needs some major improvements (reinvention) to make it as far ahead of Windows as the iPhone is ahead of other phones. Redmond imitators have put just enough smokes and mirrors in their OS to fool the average customer into thinking that Macs and Windows PCs are similar enough. (this is unfortunate but your average user will fall for it).

Some major differenciator is in order here to really trigger a mass movement of people to the Mac from an iPhone halo effect.

I see a lot of complaints over the lack of upgrades to Apple platforms. I also read a recent review about how the new "true" quad-chip from AMD seems to be a day-late and a dollar-short. They seem to have limited the processor speed, probably due to heat issues. In the meantime, the article's writer noted that it was 65 nanometer technology, . . . which now is old hat, since Intel has the Pennryn already in production.
Does that say anything to you?

a large number of doctors / surgeons like myself are locked into blackberrys and dells for everything we do at work.
in fact, a tablet mac driven the way this phone does, would be a gift for the medical profession.
iphone derivatives of various sizes could drive all sort of medical applications and if it is not done by apple, someone in the pc world will copy and continue to force us to use explorer and xp or vista
