Wednesday, July 01, 2009 - 02:05 PM EST

"The latest beta release of iPhone OS 3.1 features a few small but necessary updates aimed at iPhone 3GS devices that both developers and users will welcome," iPhone Savior reports. "One of those features include new APIs to that will enable third party apps to access videos along with the edit function. Expect a fresh crop of apps that will include iPhone video access."

Here's a list of some changes revealed in iPhone OS 3.1:
• [Non-destructive] video editing on iPhone 3GS won't overwrite the original when trimming a clip.
• iPhone will now vibrate when arranging home screen icons.
• "Fraud Protection" toggle has been added to settings under Safari.
• iPhone boot time is now faster.
• Voice Control over Bluetooth.
• New APIs to enable third party apps to access videos and edit them.

Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider, "Several developers are also reporting that the MMS button has resurfaced in the Messages application, possibly signaling plans by AT&T to begin supporting picture, sound, and video messages around the release of iPhone Software 3.1. Although developers testing yesterday's beta report being able to insert multimedia into messages, those files are still rejected by the U.S. carrier's network."

Apple still needs to put a password on the "Find my iPhone" thing.

And of course the last one:

• Fixes a issue where a tiny fraction of a fraction of a even smaller fraction of iPhones may, repeat may, ever so slightly overheat and/or causes a tiny bit shortened battery life.

Rumor has it that the non-destructive video editor can also be used to edit destructive videos.

Apple, please include x1.5 speed for podcast listeners!
x2.0 speed is just too fast and 1.5 speed seems to be the standard for students listening to lectures.

@ericdano
I thought there was a password. I had to type my .mac . . . er . . . mobleme password in twice when I tried it.

They need to add Bluetooth control over the iPod. Can't go back or forward using radio or headphones! Other than that everything else is extra icing and sprinkles on top.

'Voice control over bluetooth' - NICE!

Means my bluetooth ear device will work now!

Wonderful, it is really true that apple knows when you need something even before you know you need it.

It would be very welcome if it fixed the currently (V3.0) broken Smart Playlists again.

A live-updating Smart Playlist can lock up the music playing App for many seconds before and during playback. It can even crash. (Apple has received detailed error descriptions.)

How about a simple toggle to turn f---ing Voice Control off so I can actually listen to my music while riding.

Voice control doesn't do anything unless you press and hold the Home button as far as I know.

I wonder is this update will disable the ability for us the force enable teathering?

Has ANYONE with a regular 3G iPhone noticed a significant slowdown in the OS since 3.0? With regular stuff like opening SMS and typing a reply, the keyboard can be as much as a second delayed from touch to type. It's starting to PEE me OFF....

Anyone else notice the slowdown?

@ Grand Admiral

Yes, I have. There have been discussions on the apple support site as well regarding this issue. It seems its a somewhat common thing.

Amazining how they still can't get it to support crossfades between audio tracks. Simply amazing.

re: GRANDxADMIRAL,

Why of course; it struck me about 1minute after installing the update. One of the main reasons is the memory management of the new OS. Using the app "FreeMemory", I can see how the free memory sometimes goes as low as 3MB, whereas with the previous OS, it rarely went below 8MB. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like the new Safari browser is eating up an enormous amount of memory. It sure is frustrating as hell and I hope there will be a fix ASAP.

I belive that the update for 3.0 was the windows vista of updates. They promised so much, but it had a lot of things that could have been better. I hope they address two of my biggest concerns, one is that fact that you can not swipe to remove a number from recent calls, the other is the signifactly poorer battery life with the 3G S. Please Apple, don't make me feel like I'm playing with a $700 compass.
