iPhone sold out at Apple Retail Stores
Thursday, July 05, 2007 - 08:51 AM EDT

Apple iPhone, already sold out for some time at AT&T stores, is now sold old at all Apple Retail Stores according to Apple's online "iPhone at the Apple Retail Store" locator.

Only one Apple Retail Store has at least one iPhone in stock:

Apple Store Shadyside: 5508 Walnut Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The online Apple Store lists iPhone with a shipping time of " 2 - 4 weeks."

"I wonder what that wanker ballmer thinks now?"

Mostly his head is filled with a singing cartoon cow wearing a grass skirt and playing the ukelele. Not much else going on up there.

Gonna be kinda hard if there aren't any to sell.

Here we go. Now negative report starts about how terrible Apple is at predicting the demand for their new products and they did not prepare enough iPhones for the launch.

Jul 05, 07 - 09:12 am Comment from: Gman

I have a extra 8Gb iPhone for sale, bought two on the day of luanch, one for me, one for wife - wife wants to hold off..so either I sell it or I return it....

Jul 05, 07 - 09:13 am Comment from: Wingsy

Balmer is probably rationalizing that since Apple did not totally sell out on their opening night that there obviously isn't a very strong demand. He'll also say that Apple missed their sales goal, pulling some number like one million out of his hat (or elsewhere) to tell us that the number was secretly Apple's target.

This same BS was propagated by a report in The Street a day or so ago.

Jul 05, 07 - 09:13 am Comment from: Crabapple

I guess we now know how many iphones have been sold in less than a week.

Is that a World record for an electrical item?

How many Wii's were sold in the same time frame? Or PSP's & Xboxes, not that they are in the same category, but sooner rather than later, then gaming capability of the iphone will pose such a threat to these other gaming systems, that I will not be surprised if the other companies do not produce a widget for the iphone to access online gaming....I will not be surprised if the Wii is first to do so.

The others are too wrapped up in exploding software & DRM to be flexible enough.

Jul 05, 07 - 09:13 am Comment from: No Squirt For You

Desperate measures:
On the CNNMoney cable show, the host had a paper cutout of the iPhone. And Stephen Colbert held up a invisible iPhone. He praised its lightweight form. He pleaded with Steve Jobs to send him a real one assuring him that his endorsement would sell A LOT more phones. Funny stuff.

Jul 05, 07 - 09:14 am Comment from: Crabapple

P.S With its accelerometer, the iphone could even replace the Wii's controller!

Jul 05, 07 - 09:16 am Comment from: Treehouse

An Apple Store in Oregon is also showing iPhones in stock.

I guess the Apple employees who have been with the company for longer than a year should not expect their free phone by months end. Still, a cool gift from Apple in my opinion, even if they do have to wait a bit.

Also, I wonder if that applies to people who work at the Apple stores? Does anyone know?

Jul 05, 07 - 09:22 am Comment from: Luc Scholte van Mast

For analysts, it will be a matter of how many could have been sold. Bad Apple!!! Not making enough phones, not living up to the hype, Good Apple for giving analysts a reason to get the stock down and create a nice buying chance...

MDN: States,......elvis has left the building....

Jul 05, 07 - 09:23 am Comment from: Lurker_PC

Hmm... and the other mobile phone companies in the USA are already dancing in the streets that the iPhone didn't sell a million copies over the weekend. They say it shows the true potential market for the iPhone and it isn't THAT big of a number. The cell phone companies are in for quite a surprise!

Peace.

One thing Apple has learned from experience is to make enough of their popular products. I'll bet we see new iphone shipments very soon,( asked a store employee at the Arlington, VA. store).
As for iphone sales so far, I bet the number will be huge. Too expensive my arse? $600.00 is cheap for all of the phones ability!
Never doubt Apple, the press would have nothing left to say!

Jul 05, 07 - 10:06 am Comment from: Poppycock

I ordered two Friday night while I was overseas, and received notification they shipped this morning, so apparently, the production machine has moved back into something approaching just-in-time mode.

Jul 05, 07 - 10:12 am Comment from: Zune Tang

Hey all you Mac blowhards time to face facts: The factory that makes the iPhone also makes the marvelous Zune. They only made about 100 iPhones when they shut down that production line to put workers on the Zune line to meet demand.

I can barely make my way through Office Max to check out the latest anti-virus software with the masses crowded around the Zune display. Microsoft, you have a winner. Great job!

Apple lemmings, there's a little something called competing on merit in the marketplace, and the Zune is a clear demonstration of Microsoft's prowess in this area. Apple's copycat iPhone is no match for the innovation or quality packed into every Zune. I say get an original. Get a Zune.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Jul 05, 07 - 10:19 am Comment from: MCCFR

Last night, only 29 out of 164 had stock and - no disrespect intended -apart from the five New York stores, most of the other twenty four were locations where I wouldn't necessarily expect clearance anyway probably because I don't imagine that they're blessed with pervasive network coverage.

For the record, if Apple have already broken the one million mark then they have broken the record which was set by either the mini or the nano (I forget which) which did that number in 17 days. This achievement is far more impressive in any case simply because of the cost of the unit.

Jul 05, 07 - 10:28 am Comment from: Zune Tang

Bought my iPhone and I love it! WAY better than the crappy Zune!!!!

Jul 05, 07 - 10:33 am Comment from: Abdullah

Meanwhile, the next FUD tactic - "My iPhone broke" - has arrived with the first such story on the MSNBC site.

The actual story is simple and to be expected with any new product - writer's iPhone stops working, and after a few calls, he gets it replaced.

But he has spun it into a lengthy piece that makes it sound as though Armageddon has arrived.

Jul 05, 07 - 10:33 am Comment from: RevNeal

Zune Tang,

I'm LMAO ... great satire!
I bought my iPhone in Dallas at the Northpark store on Tuesday at about 3:30 pm. The store was busy, but the line only took about 5 minutes. Chatting with the sales guy he said that it was a good thing that I had gotten there before 5 pm, because if Monday had been any indicator of what Tuesday evening would be like, from 5pm until close the store would be packed and the line to buy about 45 minutes to an hour long. Their stock of iPhones was down to a few hundred for the 4 GB model, and just a few dozen for the 8 GB unit (I bought an 8 GB unit). They had shipments coming in every day, but those shipments were getting smaller despite the fact that they kept selling out of 8 GB units earlier and earlier every day, at which time people then buy the 4 GB units (I suppose some people are saying that a 4 GB unit is better than none).

Jul 05, 07 - 10:36 am Comment from: O

so this means we're likely north of 1 million, in five days.

according to my tea leaves (a methodology secretly used by 4 out of 5 analysts):

by Aug 1st: 3 million
by Oct 1st: 8 million
by Dec 31st: 20 milion

naturally, any with more sophisticated means of prognostication is most welcome to chime in.

It's 7:45 am. I'm sitting in front of the Tigard, OR (Brideport village) store. Online it says they have iPhones here, but there is a sign in the front of the store that says "Sorry, no iPhones today... There's an error somewhere and I'm getting a little pissed...

Jul 05, 07 - 11:29 am Comment from: Spartacus's smarter brother

This is the start of the downhill slide for Apple. With limited iPhones, the masses will have to look elsewhere for thier phone needs. Microsoft's CEO will point out that there are cheaper phones running software, and all of Apple's would-be customers will flock to some motorola phone....

Apple was SO close, but now people will move on to something else

or not.. wink

Linksys sells an iPhone. And it's soooo close to being useful. I hope some poor sap doesn't confuse the two.

Jul 05, 07 - 12:09 pm Comment from: Woody

Well, not all AT&T;stores are sold out. Got my iPhone yesterday in Valdosta, GA. I bet AT&T;stores in other out-of-the-way places still have stock.

Jul 05, 07 - 12:53 pm Comment from: Pirate4now

First... @Awesome I will trade you a Pizza for your eMate.

Second...I am a bit surprised we haven't heard an official number sold yet. I have a sell at 135 so I have a interest. (and no I am not selling all of it grin )

Third...Everyone that has seen me use it has one of three reactions a) I want one of those
b) Is it worth the money?
c) Oh its an iPhone (usually trying to sound bored when they say it.)

Point is, how many people don't know about it?

Enjoy

Jul 05, 07 - 01:22 pm Comment from: K Shaw

UPDATE: The manager came out and let us buy one each from the secret "back stock" apparently only for customer returns. He said he felt bad for the misrepresentation. Way to go Apple on exceeding our expectations again! Yay iPhone!

Jul 05, 07 - 03:49 pm Comment from: ken1w

OK, now the negative spin from the FUDsters will be that Apple planned badly by not having ENOUGH iPhones available at launch. Therefore, potential customers will be ticked off and the iPhone will fail to become a long-term success.

Jul 05, 07 - 04:31 pm Comment from: Caruso

Well, uh, not so much. I was in Mayfair Mall in Milwaukee about two hours ago, and several people walked out with iPhones.

Jul 05, 07 - 05:09 pm Comment from: G

During a quick visit during lunch saw about a half dozen people purchase iPhones at the Alderwood Mall Apple store north of Seattle. Staff commented they had plenty of iPhones.

I like our strategy, I like it a lot!

Jul 05, 07 - 11:04 pm Comment from: IONLYUSEOSX

There are a lot of 4GB iPhones left. Everyone is buying the 8GB including me.

Question is: What does Apple do with all the 4GB iPhones now?
