iPhoneDrive for Mac lets you keep your files on your Apple iPhone
Wednesday, July 11, 2007 - 10:16 AM EDT

Ecamm Network today announced the release of iPhoneDrive for Mac. iPhoneDrive is a Mac OS X application which lets the iPhone be used for file storage. It features drag and drop, making it fast and easy to move files back and forth between the Mac and iPhone.

"iPhoneDrive is the first Mac application targeted specifically towards the iPhone, and the only way to use it to store files. We've added one more use to an already very useful device," says Ken Aspeslagh, Ecamm Network's iPhone specialist, in the press release.

Another feature is the ability to copy entire folders to and from the iPhone with a single drag. Possible uses include moving files between work and home, backing up important data, and keeping useful apps and installers with you at all times.

System Requirements:
• Apple iPhone
• USB 2.0
• Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later
• iTunes v7.3 or later

iPhoneDrive costs US$9.95. A fully-functional demo (works for 7 days) is available free of charge to let users try it out before purchasing.

This is great but don't we expect Apple to allow this functionality in the near future?

btw does anyone know where to get an "I'm a Mac shirt?"

Jul 11, 07 - 10:25 am Comment from: OpJ

Yeah, we "expect" Apple to allow this functionality in the near future.

We also "expect" Apple to give the iPhone away for free, and add a button that delivers Natalie Portman directly to the user's bedroom. (I hear they are waiting a month so they can add the cheerleader chick from Heroes as an option as soon as she hits 18.)

At this point those second and third expectations are as realized from Apple as the first.

However, until Apple adds that functionality it is worth $9.95 to be able to leave the thumb drive or iPod at home and just use the iPhone to carry files back and forth.

..it would be nice if the iPhone had a button maybe next to the home button that would bring you back to Vista...don't you think..

Jul 11, 07 - 10:48 am Comment from: hhmmmm

Q: Once I copy files to the iPhone, can I view/access the files through the phone?

A: No, iPhoneDrive is only for file storage. There's no way to access your data via the iPhone's interface.

* - then who cares - use a stick drive .....

Re: "Hello I am Mac" shirt.

You buy them at the "the company store" in the corporate office of Apple in Cupertino. Its open to the public.

I like your vision... thinking outside the box, or was it in the box?

In either case, we have an opening in new product development.

This is a great idea, until the freeway runs into the 8GB wall.

And another thing, I wouldn't completely trust the security of a device with sensitive files that can connect wirelessly to NSA/ATT&T;'s phone lines.

so auto-encryption would be a plus

Well, this takes away any and all reasons why Apple shouldn't make this feature available to everyone in a firmware update to the iPhone. WhooHoo!

This doesn't do you a lot of good if you wanted to, say, take your files somewhere beside the computer running OSX with the app installed. Are there people that transport files from their computer to the same computer?

Jul 11, 07 - 01:15 pm Comment from: Spark

Who's got any room left on their iPhone for file? My 8GB is full already.

"btw does anyone know where to get an 'I'm a Mac shirt?'"

I got one for a friend here.

"Are there people that transport files from their computer to the same computer?"

No, but if I have a Mac at home and at work, it wouldn't be that much of a stretch to install the app in both places.

This would be great for me if it allowed files to be transfered b/w a Mac & PC... hopefully those wonderful hackers will work this out soon thou.

This is stupid. You can drag your files to the iPhone, but they're not accessible until you reconnect to a computer.

File under unimpressed.

"Another feature is the ability to copy entire folders to and from the iPhone"

Wait.. so one feature is that you can copy files. But wait, it gets better - bonus feature: you can copy FOLDERS too!

You've got to be kidding me. This is attempt to make a thing that does exactly 1 thing sound like it has multiple "features".

However - to everyone whining about how you can't view the files on the iPhone itself. Surely you realize that this applies equally to iPod disk mode? (Well, with the exception of the Notes folder) All this app does it bring back a semblance of Disk Mode.

Jul 11, 07 - 04:01 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

For those of us who use our ipods to transfer 4gigs or more from one computer to another, this is a nice feature. Not having the iPhone in disk mode is one of the things I miss, since I regularly use this from work office to home office.

Graphics files, movie projects, FCP projects... all of these will benefit from this.

Nice because I don't want to carry the ipod and the iphone at the same time. It taxes me! lol.

1. Stickies and iCal To Dos synchronization.

2. iWork mobile for iPhone and secure drive mounting via iTunes.

3. Video dock with remote so the iPhone can display movies and presentations on a big screen.

Apple, let's see a jaw dropping software update soon.

"No, but if I have a Mac at home and at work, it wouldn't be that much of a stretch to install the app in both places."

Alternatively you could carry a USB thumb drive with the app on it so you could install it on any MAC. HaHaHa. Then you could throw away the iPhone and just use the thumb drive.

or Apple could make it look like a standard USB mass storage device. there's an idea...
