iTunes 8.2.1 breaks Palm Pre sync
Wednesday, July 15, 2009 - 04:11 PM EST

Apple Online Store "Apple has posted a minor update to iTunes, bringing the software to v8.2.1," MacNN reports. "Release notes only describe the patch as providing 'a number of important bug fixes,' as well as correcting an 'issue with verification of Apple devices.'"

MacNN reports, "Less than an hour into the availability of v8.2.1, reports say that it breaks sync with the Palm Pre."

Ben Charny blogs for The Wall Street Journal, "Apple’s online music and video bazaar now 'disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods,' which includes Palm’s Pre, an Apple spokesman said."

MacDailyNews Take: Apple's KnowledgeBase Article: HT3642, dated June 16, 2009, addresses "iTunes and unsupported third-party digital media players."

Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple's iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.

What we wrote last month works perfectly well today:

Apple conceived of, designed, built, and maintains iTunes. The company's property is the direct result of development and continued spending along with the hard work of the company's employees. It should - and obviously will - not be provided free-of-charge to those who wish to save their failed companies by riding on Apple's coattails. iTunes is not a non-profit charity for iPod and iPhone also-rans.

This is nothing new. Piggybacking on iTunes has been tried before — ironically during the period when beleaguered Palm's new CEO worked for Apple overseeing their iPod division — and it failed, too.

History isn't merely a guide, it's a crystal ball. Unfortunately, some people never learn.

To bad Palm, you need to remove that claim from your product claim.
Let's all run out buy a Palm and sue them because iTunes will not sync with the Pre. wink

Alrighty now! The Pre is going to take it in the shorts on that one.

HEY, what the Hell?! My iTunes does not work..... Palm support, yea my iTunes is not working! What happened.... the explaination begins.

hmmm

Devil's advocate, how is Pre accessing iTunes different than Apple's hardware being able to run Windows (shudder).

For the record, I think iTunes should be licensed by Pre if they want to access it.

Jul 15, 09 - 03:23 pm Comment from: Gabriel

As much as people love to concoct conspiracy theories, I don't think this is necessarily deliberate on Apple's part.

I've got a significant library of macro code I've had to support - they're primarily used by my group, though there are other outside groups who can use some of them, unsupported, on a strictly "as-is" basis. From my experience, it's difficult enough making sure I don't break compatibility with what my *own* group needs, much less what anyone else needs. I'm able to provide support for those within my group, but if another group has been unofficially using some functionality that we need to change or eliminate... well, they have to deal with that.

This is no different from why Apple doesn't try to sell Mac OS X to generic PC box assemblers - because the support and compatibility issues would be a nightmare. Apple owns iTunes, and is under no obligation to bend over backwards to support direct competitors.

The difference is that to use Doze you have to buy a FULL version of the Doze OS, which already includes a portion of the development costs. The suggestion to license iTunes (possibly) is a solution.

But why should Apple do it? Let Palm swing in the wind.

Jul 15, 09 - 03:26 pm Comment from: Gabriel

@ WTFrank - You've got it backwards. Apple doesn't license their core technology out to others. You can install Windows on their hardware if you want, but that has nothing to do with "licensing" iTunes.

Apple has built iTunes and they own it. They are under no obligation to provide support for direct competitors.

Jul 15, 09 - 03:27 pm Comment from: Jesus

There are 5 very disappointed people in Pre land right now...

Jul 15, 09 - 03:28 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

What are you guys so happy about. I don't think iTunes is the primary reason why I would buy an iPhone over a Pre. The Pre compatibility only good for Apple, as it translates in to music sales.

Jul 15, 09 - 03:31 pm Comment from: Buster

@Mac-nugget
Apple doesn't make money off of iTunes....it is a means to sell hardware and last time I looked Apple doesn't sell the Pre.

@Jesus

WRONG! There are 6 now. It's been a few weeks since the initial launch. wink

Jul 15, 09 - 03:33 pm Comment from: ken1w

Not surprising. What I find surprising is that Palm went through the trouble of making its Pre pretend (maybe "Pre" means "pretender") to be an iPod, thinking Apple would not do this eventually. And that they would advertise it as a feature.

What Palm should have done instead is to design a simple media sync program that uses the iTunes media directory structure (in the "iTunes Music" folder) that is maintained by iTunes. Apple can control iTunes, but it can't control folders and media files stored by iTunes. Well, it can with the DRM'ed stuff, but newly purchased songs no longer have that DRM.

They probably could have done that for the R&D;cost wasted on making a Pre pretend to be an iPod.

Jul 15, 09 - 03:43 pm Comment from: PR

It won't take Palm long to fix this but it's certainly an annoyance to anyone using the Pre and iTunes. The Pre is an OK phone (takes pretty good photos) and works well enough...but it's just not an iPhone.

There are things Apple could do however to make me happier with my iPhone...I want a fricking external, bending or folding keyboard
that I can use to do actual work with. If it had it's own power capacity built in that would be good too.

But while they COULD do this they won't... since the touchpad or whatever it will be called is coming.

@Mac-nugget
>The Pre compatibility only good for Apple, as it translates in to music sales.

Apple doesn't care about music sales. iTunes exists to sell hardware. Apple hardware.

Jul 15, 09 - 03:48 pm Comment from: roguedog

@ WTFrank, Answer: MS Windows is designed to run on intel chips .... MS does not manufacture computer hardware. Apple creates hardware/software joined at the hip, and they expressly state that their software is designed ground up to run on their hardware or hardware approved by them.

Jul 15, 09 - 03:53 pm Comment from: MacTony

My estimates have 12 people upset about this. Luckily for Palm, their tech support group shouldn't be overwhelmed by the volume of calls..... smile

Jul 15, 09 - 04:01 pm Comment from: MintDog

How a company can base their business model on iTunes compatibility without Apple's backing is beyond me.

I thought Pre's broke themselves...

Jul 15, 09 - 04:15 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

Typical Applesoft tactics.

Jul 15, 09 - 04:30 pm Comment from: @ken1w

While your suggestion to Palm is probably a good one, I don't think the R&D;would be the same as for trying to emulate an iPod. Having written embedded software for a USB device, I know that it is remarkably easy to "pretend" to be something other than what you are or manufactured by someone other than yourself.

Jul 15, 09 - 05:10 pm Comment from: The Dude

@ WTFrank,
You still are paying MS for Windows (if you are being legal). MS does not mind if you buy the OS, they encourage it since they make more money. Apple does not gain anything from Palm in this situation and Palm is using iTunes as a resource they have not licensed and there is no agreement to provide support (or to stop Apple from breaking connections).

The Dude abides.

Jul 15, 09 - 05:43 pm Comment from: @JAYGEE

"Typical Apple tactics" you say? Puleeze. So I guess it's perfectly okay to keep home's front door open, and let a bunch of stoned deadheads fresh from a Phish concert troop into your house, scarf down all your food, rip off all the data and credit card information from your computer, do your girlfriend about 20 times and crash on your couch? I'm sure you'd be like totally kewl with that.

I for one wouldn't. I prefer to keep my front door locked and the possessions I worked so hard to attain protected and intact. Extending this metaphor, if you have suddenly come to your senses, you might realize that letting Palm or anyone else (Real, for example) try to pull a cheap parlor trick to mimic an 'iPod' being docked onto a Mac or a PC basically hijacks hundreds of millions of dollars of development and marketing by Apple to produce iTunes, the iTunes Store and the iPhone.

If I were Apple, I would do the very same thing. And with great prejudice.

Jul 15, 09 - 05:55 pm Comment from: Petey

Exellent news!

Breaks the Palm Pre - says it all.

My advice to Palm is dont bother trying to make it work with iTunes - Apple will only update the software again and break it again.

Just give up and die.

Jul 15, 09 - 05:57 pm Comment from: TowerTone

When I asked my buddy why he didn't get a phone with it's own music player, he launched into what I call a 'Pre vent/defense'.

Jul 15, 09 - 06:07 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

You're comparing a phone to being robbed? A bit much don't you think?

And before you throw insults at me, I understand perfectly what you mean, I just don't think it is right, and very microsoft like. Apple and microsoft are very similar.

Jul 15, 09 - 06:11 pm Comment from: Roberto

Great, downloading it NOW. Eff Pre.

Jul 15, 09 - 06:21 pm Comment from: silverhawk

I know. Let Palm pay for the new billion dollar server farm. That should cover the license fee to us iTunes.

Jul 15, 09 - 06:40 pm Comment from: yet another steve

I wonder if Palm did this deliberately--for the publicity. Gets the anti-Apple crowd to rally around them. And maybe buy their devices instead of RIM.

Because Apple was so obviously going to do this.

Palm better hope that the story remains Palm v. Apple. Because if it becomes Palm v. RIM, well, RIM users don't have to worry about this, do they?

Jul 15, 09 - 08:02 pm Comment from: iworker

Anyone know what bugs this update fixes?

Jul 15, 09 - 09:24 pm Comment from: Jubei

@silverhawk

Yep somehow the Apple haters seems to miss those little details.

Jul 15, 09 - 10:32 pm Comment from: s

Apple needs to start worrying about monopoly and think about which competitor they prefer to work with (i.e., keep them on life support). Palm, MS, Nokia, Sony, or Motorola. Second thought, may be they already did select a competitor, Google.

Jul 15, 09 - 11:39 pm Comment from: Not That Steve

Exactly, MintDog. It's only logical if they intentionally wanted Apple to break it so they could sue and claim some kind of monopolistic practices.

Jul 16, 09 - 01:13 am Comment from: MacTony

S - I get so tired of hearing this monopoly BS. Apple has 1% market share in the mobile sector. So, that 1% gives Apple a monopoly?? You may want to back off of that koolaid you are drinking.

Jul 16, 09 - 05:46 am Comment from: fixo

The solution to the problem is simple: complain to PALM and ask for a firmware upgrade that makes the Pre compatible with a software they didn't write, they don't own and that was not meant to talk with a PRE.

Jul 16, 09 - 06:42 am Comment from: mindpower

Palm should be allowed to license connectivity to iTunes. After all, Pre customers buying tunes through iTunes will only make Apple more money.

Jul 16, 09 - 10:26 am Comment from: NetBookHackintosher

If the Music labels were smart they would build their own music store joining all of them together so they can reach all customers on all devices. Not just iPods and iPhones. Sorry Apple.

Jul 16, 09 - 11:50 am Comment from: goblin

Guess Pre folks will just have to use Double Twist

Jul 16, 09 - 03:51 pm Comment from: heartbreak

Ha,ha. Hee,hee. Too bad, lazy Palm.
