iTWire’s Beer: My next notebook is an Apple MacBook
Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 03:35 PM EST

"Whatever else you may think of Apple, it is a company that makes top quality hardware. Now along comes MacBook, an Intel notebook made by Apple, capable of running Windows in dual boot mode, packed with power, with all these plug and play features built-in, and very reasonably priced. I'm in the market for a notebook so what am I going to do? I have been a long time campaigner for mandatory three-year warranties on all PC notebooks. My last two notebooks, an HP and a Toshiba, clapped out on me within two years. I figured I deserved better for $2000. Judging by the mounds of Apple faithful who assure me, I'm fairly certain that a MacBook isn't going to give up on me within three years. Anyway, at a starting price of $1099 plus the cost of Windows, I'm prepared to take the gamble," Stan Beer writes for iTWire.

"I'm not a fan of Mac OSX, mainly because I've got all this stuff stored on my Windows desktops and it would be a real hassle to move over to an alien world. However, if I can also have a Windows partition on my disk, then I can take advantage of all of the nifty things that I've been told the Mac OSX can do without me fiddling around, while doing the work I need to do in Windows," Beer writes. "Given that I have been a DOS and Windows user for 20 years, the fact that I am seriously considering buying a MacBook should be ringing alarm bells and sending shivers down the collective spines of Dell, Acer, Lenovo, HP, Toshiba and all the other PC notebook makers."

It is not about a security blanket. I too need essential windows apps for my job. Now that Macs run Windows they become much more usefull. MDN needs to grow up. It is a multiple OS world we live and work in.

May 18, 06 - 03:58 pm Comment from: Fred Mertz

John,

MDN is spot on. Most people are terrified of change. This lets them take what they think they need (Windows) with them and then they can find out for themselves whether they really need Windows or not.

Fred, you are wrong, John is spot on.
Most people are not "terrified" of change.

May 18, 06 - 04:02 pm Comment from: Steve the Genius

As a leader of lemmings, MDN at the front of the line leading the faithful over the cliff.

I bet Steve is way back at HQ on top of the hill watching the slaughter.

When it's over, he announces too bad about the demise of Macintosh the Great, but that leaves us as the seller of high dollar Windows enclosures that look vaguely like our flagship product the iPod, now in 57 varieties of screen sizes, colors, and gimmicks.

May 18, 06 - 04:07 pm Comment from: Steve the Genius

I'm sorry. That's not fair. Steve would not do that especially right on the heals of producing slim new laptops that run cool, silent and problem free.

May 18, 06 - 04:07 pm Comment from: me

So he wants to keep using Windows because he has a lot of stuff on his desktop? huh?

stuff like documnets? documents that will open on a Mac?

Or stuff like applications? applications he won't need like Norton Anti-virus or applications he can't get on a Mac like Microsoft Project small business edition SP3 pro extreme?

May 18, 06 - 04:08 pm Comment from: me

Why is AAPL down $2.08 with a heavy sell off at the end of the day?

May 18, 06 - 04:15 pm Comment from: jer

john, like many other clear-minded individuals (i.e. clear of biased Apple worship), sees it how it really is (for the masses).

good stuff.

May 18, 06 - 04:16 pm Comment from: Tainted

Given the QC problems of Apple's recent hardware I'm not sure top quality should be used to describe it any longer.

May 18, 06 - 04:18 pm Comment from: Nick

don't forget Parallels - you get near-native performance in Windows XP, while booted up in Mac OS X. You can share folders too. It's like having Virtual PC, only running at near-native performance.

"As a leader of lemmings, MDN at the front of the line leading the faithful over the cliff."

Let it go. The lemmings story is a myth invented by a Disney documentary. Apple also had it wrong in that horrible commercial of the same name.

May 18, 06 - 04:20 pm Comment from: rasterbator

Dear John,
What besides M$ Office do you need M$ Windows for at your place of business? I am guessing nothing. Go get a Mac, install NeoOffice (for Word documents, Excel files and PowerPoint files) and use Mail and iCal to get your Exchange mail and Exchange events.

The best thing is your respiratory system will improve because you will be able to breathe easier during the course of the day.

May 18, 06 - 04:20 pm Comment from: OzzysCross101

Ew. I haven't heard the words "plug and play" in ages. Now I won't be able to sleep tonight remembering how that was the second biggest lie M$ sold to the people (first being that Windows was their original idea)

May 18, 06 - 04:24 pm Comment from: G Spank

Now comes the real test. Will he be too stubborn to let OS X in, or will he actually use it enough to realize how good it is...

FO MS Troll

Stan Beer will nit pick the hell out of the MacBook, if he gets one.

His main complaint will be that this Windows app or that Windows app on the Windows side wasn't included with the Windows disc and wasn't added to the Boot Camp download the way Dell or HP adds DVD playback software and other half baked software goodies. Using the Mac side for these programs will not cross his mind.

Then he will bitch about the keyboard layout and the one button track pad. He will bitch about having to buy a mouse and Apple only makes a one button variant. Buying a MS 3 button mouse will not cross his mind.

He will bitch about excessive scratches. He will bitch about the reflective screen. He will bitch about the cost of Apple RAM, fan noise, excessive heat, you name it. There will be no end to his bitching.

When he finally gets around to using Mac OS X he will have spread so much FUD about the hardware that it won't matter whether he likes the OS it or not.

With friends like Stan Beer, Apple will not need enemies.

I seriously doubt that John is referring to the Office suite. There are many custom made apps that businesses use that were developed for windows.

"Why is AAPL down $2.08 with a heavy sell off at the end of the day?"

Maybe because of recent news headlines like these:

Just a thought...

competition:

No coincidence at all. APPL has been experiencing what are called "bear raids" for weeks. The bears -- even those working for a certain multi-zillionaire rival -- will eventually run out of cash and be stuck with a lot of paper once the stock starts picking up again when the iPod line is rejuvenated. By then, goofs like them -- and you -- will have been kicked to the curb. Keep on enjoying mediocrity!

..One by one they fall. Top three computers on Amazon are Macbooks. The black one is #3!! In the top 25 list, 13 are Macs! Apple has hit the home run with the Macbooks.

MW: left. Other Wintel makers are picking up what is left.

May 18, 06 - 06:45 pm Comment from: john

rasterbator: I am a translator. I used Translation Memory software and voice dictation software. There is no TM software for Mac and no voice dicatation software worth mentioning either. Windows drives me crazy sometimes, and I do prefer a Mac, but the ability to run Windows on a Mac is a godsend for me and I am sure many other people too. It has nothing to do with childish statements about security or otherwise. Windows has a massive developer base with products for most fields of work. Mac does not. Unfortunately.

May 18, 06 - 08:26 pm Comment from: Tre

Top three computers on Amazon are Macbooks.

---------

Not that it's a bad thing that the top 3 are Macs, but looking at those numbers realistically...

1. Dell computers are not sold on Amazon.
2. Amazon is offering a $100 rebate.
3. Not many Pc users buy their computers on Amazon.

May 18, 06 - 08:29 pm Comment from: Tre

One more thing....

Apple computers have been ruling the Amazon top 10 list for more than a year now and Mac shipments from last quarter were still only around a million units..

Bottom line.. Amazon's top 10 list doesn't mean much

May 18, 06 - 08:43 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Apple computers have been ruling the Amazon top 10 list for more than a year now and Mac shipments from last quarter were still only around a million units.."

And just think of all of the really tall, muscular women from South America who could use a MacBook.

May 18, 06 - 09:11 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

Oh, DEAR! Apple's market cap has fallen below Dell's once again! When the competition is this tight you can't afford a 3%+ drop on a day when the guy who's behind registers a 1%+ gain. I wonder how much Dell spent of his own cash to make that happen!

Sun and Cisco also bucked the day's trend and ended on an up-note. The Dow, S&P;and NASDAQ all finished about 2/3% down on the day. Anyone who has been following Apple stock is well aware that its moves are far crazier than those of most stocks. It will go down instead of up as often as not on news - good OR bad.

May 19, 06 - 01:00 am Comment from: Beer Man

So he's given up on writing the Mac security FUD now?

May 19, 06 - 02:51 am Comment from: TFB

Actually John (and Fred and jer), in the context of the article, the reference to a "security blanket" is wholly appropriate (apart from the word security being used to reference Windows!) as this is basically what the guy is saying: I don't know mac but I know windows and can use what I feel comfortable with while testing the mac.
I think you are showing early signs of paranoia thinking that every reference to the security blanket refers to those like you who just need to use Windows for the odd crucial app. Maybe it's just narcissism.
I think the term security blanket applies to lots of windows users who are thinking of switching. I see it every day. "Oh I've been looking at switching for a while, but now I can install windows I'm going to give it a try".
The world doesn't revolve around you!

MW: needed, John needed to look at the context and stop taking things personally.

BootCamp is all part of Apple's grand plan:

May 19, 06 - 08:45 am Comment from: OpJ

Let's be honest here--the great thing about Boot Camp is that it allows Windows users to try a mac while remaining able to use all that great cracked and pirated bittorrented software they rely on so much, which I've had fun sampling the past two months.
