iWork for iPad: Apple brings Multi-Touch™ to word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation apps
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 - 06:34 PM EST

Apple's iWork productivity applications that Mac users know and love — Keynote, Pages, and Numbers — have been completely redesigned for iPad.

Users will soon be able to create incredible presentations, word processing documents, and spreadsheets by directly touching the words and images on the large, Multi-Touch™ screen. And each of these apps has been designed specially for iPad, with completely new features. So while they’re simple and easy to use, they’re also the most powerful productivity apps ever built for a mobile device.

They even import iWork ’09 and Microsoft Office documents and allow you to send in iWork ’09 and PDF formats. And because Keynote, Pages, and Numbers will be sold individually on the App Store, you can purchase them all at once, or add exactly the combination you want to your iPad.

Keynote: With custom graphic styles, elegantly-designed themes, stunning animations and effects, and powerful, new features designed just for iPad, Keynote makes it easy to put the show in slideshow.

Pages: Everything you need to create beautiful documents. Including Apple-designed templates and easy-to-use formatting tools. So putting your words into a stunning layout has never been simpler.

Numbers: Create compelling, attractive, spreadsheets in minutes. With over 250 easy-to-use formulas, an intelligent keyboard, flexible tables, and great-looking charts, the answers will literally be right at your fingertips.

Can Keynote be shown through a data projector video out from the iPad? Seems you still need a Mac…

I don't know about the name iPad. Have you seen the old MacTV sketch? Hilarious!

Available in April here in Canada. Just in time for my birthday !

You know how you can tell the 12 year olds on here? They get all giggly over the name iPad.

Jan 27, 10 - 07:00 pm Comment from: krquet

Apple may need to change the name, and I certainly wish they did. Mac-see-Pad or whatever, iTampon is now the 2nd trendiest topic on Twitter eclipsing anything else Apple. I think the product is now simply hijacked by its name and Apple allowed it happen.

For the strangest reason, the moment he declared the name, I had an averse feeling towards it. I realise it's psychological, but still, it may not be the best way to win hearts with a new product when you invent a new wall between the product and customers, even with the bad publicity is still publicity mantra.

Also, to distinguish between iPod and iPad, c'mon Apple, retire the silly 'i' thing already. I love my Apple TV, and using the word Apple can be a brand booster on an already recognised brand.

Finally, I have a feeling, SJ had to cut his originally intended show in half, as he couldn't get the deal with Hollywood and the Text Book Publishers. They would have been on stage with him otherwise. Maybe, SJ just wanted to get this product out of the house finally after a decade as real artists ship. But I'm not won over by Mr. Ive on this one. The back of this should have been flat, and not an imitation thin trick.

But I'll take their word for it, this is the most advanced tech they ever worked on, and now I'm very curious with what's under the hood really.

Yes there is a projector (video) cable available.

iWork 2010 to be available for both OSX and Windows so that Windows sufferers can create their Keynote presentations on their PC and then take the iPad to the client's office. That's my prediction anyway.

MDN Magic Word = indeed
As in this is indeed a game changer

HughB writes, "You know how you can tell the 12 year olds on here? They get all giggly over the name iPad."

A female reporter on an NPR piece suggested there must not have been many women in the room when the name was discussed. So if both 12 year olds and adult women are making that same association, the iPad name may have been a mistake. (It wouldn't have been my first choice.)

Jan 27, 10 - 07:19 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

Hold on Just One Minute ! ! !
To Quote: " ... each of these apps has been designed specially for iPad, with completely new features ..." So, we long-time loyalists have to get along with (a perfectly acceptable) iWork'09 while the newcomers get iWork'10? Great. Just GREAT ! ! ! Talk about loyalty, will ya!
Truth be told, it looks like most of the "new features" are either designed to make it work on the smaller, fancier hardware or "templates" that have yet to trickle down - up? - to '09 users. Maybe I'd better log in to my MobileMe account to see if it's a "bonus offering".

Jan 27, 10 - 07:25 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Raymond in DC

Somehow I've managed to use note pads, elbow pads, post-it pads, knee pads, gardening pads, heli-pads, and all manner of other pads in the presence of other women without them breaking into hysterical laughter.

I'm sticking with the 12 year old theory.

"iWork 2010 to be available for both OSX and Windows so that Windows sufferers can create their Keynote presentations on their PC and then take the iPad to the client's office. That's my prediction anyway."

Why? You can create on the iPad itself.

Note the iPad apps are separate from iLife 9.99 each

Jan 27, 10 - 08:07 pm Comment from: aking

Can you print your Pages document from the iPad ?
I know iTouch users claim they have an App to print, but I do not know which App that is.
Printing is critical for me. I hope there is a way.

Jan 27, 10 - 08:20 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

aking, there's no USB port on the thing. It cannot make a physical connection to a printer to drive that device. So, essentially, I'd say "no, you can't print directly from the iPad ..." ... unless you have a network printer and the iPad can join the network it's on. However ... you do have iWork. Which very likely means you can access iWork.com or can otherwise share your documents with a local printer - be that the inkjet attached to your iMac or the Kinkos down the street. So, I'd conclude "... it doesn't really matter.". You most certainly can get hardcopies of that which you create on the iPad. And I think that's really the question you are asking.

Jan 27, 10 - 08:24 pm Comment from: aking

Interestingly there is a dongle for proving a USB port to connect a camera for downloading pictures. I wonder if it would work or just be one way?

Jan 27, 10 - 08:31 pm Comment from: Spudly

Yes the iPad can drive an external monitor...and not only in MIRROR mode!

Jan 27, 10 - 08:32 pm Comment from: Spudly

As for printing and USB, yes, there's "dongle" that gives the device a standard USB port. dunno about printer drivers though!??

Jan 27, 10 - 08:34 pm Comment from: aking

Guess we have to see what comes bundled with Pages for the iPad

Jan 27, 10 - 08:36 pm Comment from: MikeK

Yes, there are several printing apps that allow you to print from a network printer.. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't work from an iPad as well..

Do a search for "Printing" from the app store.

Jan 27, 10 - 09:03 pm Comment from: You killed Kenny

Search for Air Sharing Pro. It prints wirelessly if you have a Mac with Printer Sharing turned on. You can print Pages and other iWork documents as long as you have saved them with the "Include Preview" option turned on.

On the 'pad' name, in case no one's made the connection, what about the 'Padd' of Trek and other SciFi versions?

Jan 27, 10 - 09:50 pm Comment from: PonyRD

My understanding is the iPad has some additional Trekkie pad history... Way to go Zimmerman!

Jan 27, 10 - 10:08 pm Comment from: eon2010

it seems to me that the creation of iWork for iPad is a great idea and a way to tell Microsoft, that this is the way to advance the PC technology to the next stage so if they want in, then they can create Mobile Office for the iPad as well. Which of course is a big blow to Nokia who is waiting for Microsoft to release that for their devices.

Jan 27, 10 - 10:09 pm Comment from: eon2010

iWork seems to be the straw that will solidify the iPad as more than a multimedia capable game machine.

Jan 27, 10 - 10:59 pm Comment from: eon2010

many new printers are bluetooth enabled so printing that way is theoretically possible. However Apple would have to make a global print service available.

Jan 27, 10 - 11:03 pm Comment from: Tiger

There is no Finder. So finding a picture and adding it to your Keynote presentation will be a little different. Dragging a picture from Safari to the desktop and then dragging it to the Keynote presentation is not how you can do it. To do any serious presentation work, you need GraphicConverter or Photoshop. Those are missing in action. With no real multi-tasking, even if such applications were available, it won't be easy.

Connecting to a flash drive is not straightforward either. How do you export your Keynote file to a PowerPoint file, then save it to your flash drive to take to a conference? Printing will be difficult, but may be done wirelessly. There are no wireless standards to connect to a projector.

There is no reference manager like EndNote. So serious manuscript and grant writing is not possible. Mek & Tosj, where are you?

How do you embed a spreadsheet into a word processing or presentation file?

Looks like a whole new world still needs to be invented.

Jan 28, 10 - 12:10 am Comment from: JV

After a brief look in the SDK docs, there is a shared documents folder that multiple apps can use => share from one app, close, read from the other app, and the docs can be shared with desktop. Also, as mentioned, the video out is 720p and treated as a separate window object, so it essentially can run dual monitor such as keynote with projector with presenter info on the iPad and just the keynote slides on the projector.

Jan 28, 10 - 01:00 am Comment from: NCG598

Come on people. I use my first generation iPhone hooked up to projectors for presentations or videos. Geez!!!!

People STILL think you need to carry a laptop!

iPhone or iPod Touch
Cable hooks to 30 Pin connector
Do JPEG of slides
Slide your finder or use the dock with a remote to forward or back!

Export your slides as JPEG to the iPhoto, make an album, put the images to the album, then sync the album to the ipod Touch or iPhone, and use the cable to connect to a Projector.

HELLO!!!!

Present by projector, show in hand, or allow the other person to view it own their own.

I have well over a hundred presentations on my little 4 gig Ist Gen iPhone.

Smap, Snap!!
HELLO!!! hmmm

Jan 28, 10 - 01:08 am Comment from: NCG598

Just capture the image from the screen. Use keynote on the iPad and goto your photo library and import the captured image. Fit size you need in box.

Instant images form websites, PDF to JPEG conversion just by using screen capture. Do it now on the MacBook. Works the same on the iPad.

Photo shop to JPEG, iPhoto, to album, and from photo library on the iPad to keynote or Pages. Simple.

Jan 28, 10 - 01:21 am Comment from: NCG598

Oh the same process will work for the AppleTV.

If you have multiple people using laptops, just setup the AppleTV and use an airport express for the wifi connection. Then each person can load their presentations, video, music or whatever to the AppleTV from their laptops and no connection is required. So they just sync the AppleTV to their iTunes on the PC or Mac.

Super simple for 2 or more laptops.

If you can transfer photos or video into iTunes, then you can do it and no one has to hook up one cable to the projector, use the AppleTV remote to control it, and they can sync their presentation from where they are seated. Real Cool.

Get it? Got it? Goood!!! smile

I guess Apple forgot the world doesn't run on iWork, it runs on MS Office. Niche device. Mac toy.

Jan 28, 10 - 04:19 am Comment from: JKPinPDX

OK... so for us Roadwarriors... I got a couple of questions...

1. How will I be able to use my presentation REMOTE (I do big presentations and need to walk up to 50ft away from the projector) with the iPad? My current presentation remote uses a USB hub as a dongle for the handheld remote to connect to when I use it on my Mac laptop.

2. How will I be able to "hook it up" to a projector. If it uses a cable to connect with my projector... then I refer you back to question 1.

3. To answer the question about PRINTING... It has Bluetooth... I have been printing "cordless" for years now with portable Canon Printers with BLUETOOTH. So there you go. Hopefully they have a dedicated printer function in it. With iWork for iPad, no doubt they have a solution for printing... most likely a USB dongle to jack into the 30 pin slot.... or you could use Bluetooth if your printer supports that type of connection.

Thoughts on this? Any iWork users out there, thinking about these issues too? Any ideas on how this will work for us "Road Warriors"?

I see a lot of people complaining that this device doesn't replace their phone because it can't make calls and doesn't have a camera, or doesn't replace a laptop because it's not a fully featured OS. Who honestly thought it would be? I would love a camera for ichat, and even limited multi-tasking but that's about it, I would intend to use this as my main computing device, I would expect to still need a computer, although it would be nice to have some closer integration with other devices such as easily transferring files via some sort of vnc connection. That said, the iPhone software improved dramatically over time and with the power of the iPad I would expect the same, Apple have never been a company who did too much too soon, they've always been pretty good at judging what the consumer market is ready for.

Jan 28, 10 - 05:08 am Comment from: Daner

@JKPinPDX-
Do you have a mobile phone with BT? Can it be used as a presentation remote? I first did that using Salling Clicker and a TiBook many, many years ago, it would surprise me if nobody comes up with a similar solution for the iPad.

I can see it being useful for reviewing, light editing and presenting, but I suspect that it won't be replacing a more conventional desktop or laptop for ground-up creation of presentations.

Of course, you'll need to carry both the screen output and USB dongles (and a USB flash drive) to be ready for different presentation situations.

Jan 28, 10 - 06:56 am Comment from: Luis

@ JKPinPDX
For your presentation, Apple already has a remote app for the iPhone that allows you to use your iPhone as a remote for keynote. As it works through Wifi, 50 ft. away from the iPad will not be an issue.

Jan 28, 10 - 11:06 am Comment from: NCG598

Yes, the iPhone or iPod Touch has a Keynote App that allows the laptop to controlled from these devices. Plus it shows you the image of the slide so you do not have to look back to see it.

Should work on the iPad. But you probadly still have to carry a little airport express ($99.00)to make the network happen. Which is not too bad because you can hook up your printer to it, so you can wirelessly print and audio out from it as well if you need an audio system to play to a sound system. It is very portable, it will easily fit in your front pocket of your jeans. And it can be there all day with reasonable comfort!

Jan 28, 10 - 11:09 am Comment from: DLMeyer

For those who have missed it, Apple has been doing a LOT of "sharing" for a while now. OK, the sharing in iWork isn't quite what you need in a single-tasking computer, but ... didn't they come up with a new version of iWork that runs only on the iPad?
Yes ... I caught that Padd reference. And I have to admit, my aging memory suggests more than a vague similarity between the iPad and the Padd. Size. Touchscreen. WiFi. Just how many of the Big Boys at Apple are of my grey-beard generation?

Jan 28, 10 - 11:24 am Comment from: HolyMackerel

@ NCG598 "Keynote App that allows the laptop to controlled from these devices… But you probadly still have to carry a little airport express"

I have set my MBP to create a wireless network and the iPhone and MBP can talk on their own to control KeyNote even when no other devices, ethernet or 'real' network exists.

Jan 28, 10 - 11:48 am Comment from: NCG598

Yes, that will work as well. I forgot about that. I have used the airport so long for the printing element when doing a presentation. Sometimes you need to print addtional copies to a Samsung Color Laser or material from the net.
Thank for the refresh!
