Japan investigates report of battery sparks in one discontinued first generation iPod nano unit
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 10:04 AM EST

"Japan is investigating a possible defect in Apple Inc.'s iPod after one of the popular digital music players reportedly shot out sparks while recharging, a government official said Wednesday," The Associated Press reports.

"An official at the trade and economy ministry, which oversees product problems, said a defect is suspected in the lithium-ion battery in the iPod Nano, model number MA099J/A. He spoke on customary condition of anonymity, saying he is reiterating a ministry position," AP reports.

"The problem surfaced in January in Kanagawa Prefecture southwest of Tokyo, and Apple reported the problem to the ministry in March. No one was injured, the official said. Other details weren't available," AP reports.

"The iPod was assembled in China, but it was unclear who made the lithium-ion battery, the ministry official said," AP reports.

"The ministry said Apple has shipped about 425,000 iPods of the same suspected model were shipped into Japan. It was unknown how many have been sold and how many might still be in stores," AP reports. "Shipments of the model began in September 2005 and were discontinued after September 2006, the ministry said."

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: What we know so far is that a single, discontinued, first generation (1G) iPod nano unit out of millions that were shipped worldwide is reported to have a battery sparking issue which is being investigated in Japan.

Stay tuned for overblown and overwrought overreactions that are likely to ensue as the result of poor reporting which will fail to put the issue into proper context regarding the ratio (one unit out of several million) and/or the model (two generations ago, discontinued) which is claimed to have been affected.

UPDATE: 10:22am EDT: As predicted, see the dumbasses at ZDNet Australia who are illustrating their story with a new 3G iPod nano without mentioning the actual model affected: iPod overheats, sparks while being charged. Contact:

UPDATE: 10:39am EDT: Idiots on parade. See Vnunet (Japan investigates iPod Nano fire) who are illustrating their article (which gets the fact correct in the text, "These products were sold in Japan between September 2005 and September 2006," but still stupidly illustrates with an image of the new 3G iPod nano. I think some Japanese company must have a competing product on the horizon or else this belonged to "someone important" or their child.

Took two months for Apple to report the problem is disturbing. I assume they checked if the battery in the unit was original equipment or after market. I hope Apple Japan was smart enough to exchange the unit and sent it back to CA for analysis.

Why won't someone think of the children?!?!?!

Hello,

You should be sued by Apple.

You are illustrating your story with a new 3G iPod nano without mentioning the actual model affected which is the discontinued first generation iPod nano.

A major diplomatic incident for sure... A country needs to take action when such things happen.

Wait til they discover the fault was in the battery - made by Sony in Japan.. wink

I know you won't believe this, but a local sensationalist news channel reported the story while waving around a Mint colored 3G model.

Why harp on the excesses of the Japanese government and public media?

Have you not read or heard "news" of members of our intrepid congress "investigating" Barry Bonds et al? Many of our lug heads in DC and public media are more interested in grandstanding and hearing themselves speak than deal with any real issues of national concern.

It's almost pathetic how predictable the mainstream media outlets are regarding stories like this... a combination of anti-Apple bias from The Usual Suspects, and the growing incompetence of today's reporters who don't know how to do actual journalism anymore.

Well, chalk up another switcher for old Cubert! My girlfriend just bought a MacBook last night. She never considered a Mac until she met me 4 months ago. Now, she is a diehard. My good friend Wes is considering getting a MacBook, too, as is another friend of mine - Katherine. She emailed me yesterday with questions about Macs vs. PC's, etc.

At this rate, Steve-O should slip me some of those stock options. I've lost count of how many people I've convinced to buy a Mac.

"Well, chalk up another switcher for old Cubert!"

Old Cubert? What the hell have you done with young Cubert? I demand an investigation.

Ampar,

Don't ask for Elliot Spitzer.

Mar 12, 08 - 11:01 am Comment from: Demon

It's likely that the Nano had been modified with a non Apple Battery replacement battery.
It's gone from a Spark to a Fire in a few more stories it'll be up to an Explosion and then from 1 in millions to millions effected. Got to love journalistic ethics and research. News companies have gotten so cheap that that don't have FACT checkers any more.

How is what you are saying relevant to this topic?? More importantly , who cares!!?? We all have done it.

Mar 12, 08 - 11:35 am Comment from: neomonkey

dbtechno.com also has a bogus story about this, with a 3G Nano pictured and no mention of the alleged problem being with a 1G Nano. ars technica also makes no mention of the 1G Nano.

MS money backing these false stories?

Mar 12, 08 - 12:09 pm Comment from: Cubert

@@Cubert,
It isn't relevant to this forum at all. I was just sharing info and stories. So, I guess I and a few others here do care.

@Ampar,
He's on hiatus today. Back tomorrow - promise!

@Cubert,
Your use of Macintosh computers, and its mystery, is what attracted your girlfriend to you. Now that she has one too your relationship is doomed. Familiarity breeds contempt. wink

Well, chalk up another one to Former Mac User! My wife bought a MacBook Pro. I told her, "Don't buy that POS". She did it anyway. After the screen quit on it twice and it locked up after installing Leopard she bought a Toshiba. She said I could have the MacBook Pro. I've been using it for a paperweight.
